This trade makes the 2023 first irrelevant IMO because it likely won't be a lottery pick. 2025 might hurt but whatever. Hording draft picks is a GarPax thing, and we just did it for 4 years and got Lauri, Carter, White and Pat Williams. People on the radio are arguing that we just built the same type of team that we all wanted blown up when Butler was here, but that Bulls team was really really hollow with no strong assets outside of Butler. Build a winning culture with this team and put yourself in a position to land a superstar if one is out there and wants to come here. If it fails miserably hopefully they can deal LaVine for a decent blow up package still in a couple years.

Honestly, if they can just get a pick or even some seconds, I'd take that with the picks AK just dealt. Hell, shop White for some draft capital too at this point. You'll generate some TPEs in those deals too. Top 10 Guards - LaVine, Ball, Caruso, Forwards - Derozan, Williams, Brown, BAE signing? Big - Vooch, Simonović, Vet Min Then Ayo, Green, Dotson, and whatever other two way or vet min guys. Edit, they may also be able to get Caruso with the Theis TPE and then split the MLE two ways for a depth wing and big, along with the BAE.

And if he's wrong, I'm thinking the AK marriage will be a lot shorter than the Pax one. Which I'm pretty okay with.

The Bulls would have to like trade for like... Leonard or something to get me Bears/Fields level excitement, but the sports are different.

It's really going to be interesting to see what these guys sign for. I would love a timeline and corresponding values for any Cubs offers made to them. I could see the Yankees actually overpaying for Rizzo if he continues to produce for them (3/60 or 4/75 ish). I think KB eventually gets 5/130 from somone (probably the Giants) and Baez gets 5/110 from the Mets. That's a bummer if it's what it takes for Bryant/Baez.

Good added points CCP. A few added nuances that go past a primer. Various exemptions can only be used for various types of transactions. A MLE, for example, is only used on a FA. A TPE is used only on players under contract in which you complete a trade. So it brings up an interesting situation. It's reported the Bulls are losing Theis to the Rockets. They can't stop him since he's unrestricted. But all parties are usually incentivized to make the signing a S&T, which generates a TPE for the Bulls to be used later. They just have to throw in a nonmaterial asset. That's reportedly happening. Then we get to the Caruso signing. His base salary will fit the TPE generated from Theis. So do you reach out to LA and also facilitate a S&T, which would use up your Theis TPE and create one for LA equal to Caruso's salary? Clear win for LA who has a new asset for trades down the road. For the Bulls they could keep their MLE instead of using it on Caruso. So is a MLE for a FA now better than a TPE for a trade later (must be used in 1 year)? I'd probably lean towards keeping the MLE, but really depends on the market in FA left. But you could also split up the MLE and make two smaller depth signings, which they probably need. But it isn't necessarily open and shut and the possible cap manipulations available are quite broad in nature.

Defense. Edit: also Arc put up a -0.1 VORP (0.9WS) and Caruso 0.6 (2.4 WS). Not sure what stats Arc was better in. The other thing is that the NBA makes horsefeathering gazillions of dollars a year and doesn't have that many players to spend it on, so anyone worth even close to half a damn makes a ton of money. Plus, salaries tend to congregate around the exemption amounts. Caruso is worth more than the BAE, so he's probably going to make at or near the MLE because that's where the market leads to. And guys worth more than the MLE, but not quite max might often fall towards that MLE number anyways, unless they can work out a S&T or resign with their current club.

A lot of it has become so complex and I haven't kept up with it like I used to. But I'll try. Primer: most teams operate over the cap. Between the cap and the luxury tax there are several exemptions you can use. And then once you reach the luxury tax there are more restrictions and different exemptions available to use. If you're under the cap, you don't need exemptions although there is one new exemption that was created for teams who operated under the cap to sign deals for slightly more than the vet minimum salary. So as for trades there is a really broad category of "traded player exemptions" for teams over the cap. One of the rules, generally, is a salary matching requirement of two teams trading who are both over the cap. But if one team is under the cap, or a large multi player trade can be structured in the "right" way, it creates a "TPE" , which basically just creates a exemption equal the salary of a player, to be used to complete the trade at a later date. They used to call it simultaneous v non-simultaneous trades, not sure if that's still the language used. The whole TPE generation is generally where stiff gets confusing, even for fans who pay attention closely. Maybe I'm crazy, but I'd rather not trade White. He's only two years out of college and is still pretty damn young. He's blocked from starting at the 1 & 2 spots now, but I think he'd be a great spark off the bench. Now, if he could bring back a really solid young wing, then go for it. I just don't know if that's possible. Between Ayo and the reported Rose interest and now Ball confirmed, just seems like a decent trade chip. They need another wing.

So I think this basically just allows them to keep all their QOs and other cap holds. And would have the MLE and the "major" trade chips would be Sato, Thad, and maybe White. Aminu as a cap match piece. So basically Thad and Satos partially guaranteed expirings for assets and then those assets + White + Aminu as filler for something good, but expensive. Bird rights on Thies, Temple, MLE (hopefully full, not taxpayer) , and minimum signings. There's also some chatter that the Lonzo deal could be a S&T three way deal with NO and CHA. There's some over the cap/under the cap nuance there that I haven't totally kept up with since the NBA underwent their last major CBA revisions. But sounds like signs point to operating over the cap. Biggest thing there is there may be lots of trade wheeling and dealing. Maybe a Lauri S&T. And having the MLE to use, but holding bird rights on several guys like Theis.

The White Sox are just another team and in no way are a rival to the Cubs. That's [expletive] fan stuff. The main knock on Madrigal besides health is that people think he doesn't hit for enough power. My question, what 2nd does? Unless we find out who the other trade options were it's tough for me to criticize what they got for Kimbrel. its not that he doesn't hit for enough power, it's that he actually hits for zeeeeeeero power if he can up his BB rate, he could be a special, world-class type of lead-off hitter. but he's probably who he is at this point and thats a decent to good player, max. I really can just see him being flipped again. Or at least one of him or Hoerner. As soon as this offseason even, depending on if they are really retooling (as opposed to a mini tank).

There's no law saying the Cubs can't trade Nico (or Madrigal) plus something for pitching and sign a good SS in the offseason. When I saw the trade I kind of felt (with no basis) that Madrigal is destined to get flipped again.

Never experienced a trade deadline for this. This better be a quick tank given how many assets Jed just had to deal from. This will feel really weird for a while though.

Definitely provides better depth than Holtz/Horsted if Graham or Kmet were to get hurt.
