Broke: The Bears chose Graham over Fuller! Woke: The Bears chose Vildor and some other cheap cast offs over Fuller @ 14M (or whatever his base salary would have been).

There. Is. No. Money. Well I'm mean there always is momey, becuase The Cap Isn't Real ™, but the timing of this move was not a limiting factor in whatever or whoever they wanted to bring in.

Pretty sure Fuller was due close to 20m if they kept him. And since I'm late to the party, I'm taking the wins. I wear my jersey proudly every Sunday in hopes of a Bears victory. Even when all hope is dire with a QB like Trubisky behind center. Well I guess I was wrong about being able to keep Fuller but it still bugs me that this wasn't done months ago. Why? What difference does it make now verse June?

He didn't create that much space. He made $4.5MM last year and the Bears just freed up another $4.66MM in space. Fuller signed for $9MM. I don't know what the 4.5M is in reference to, but the Graham move wasn't enough for Fuller, either way you slice it. As it is, the Gramah move gives them just a couple mil in breathing room below the cap (they were slightly over going into today).

But if Dalton gets killed, Fields is his backup. So. Just watch, if Donald kills Dalton, Nagy will run Foles out there and the excuse will be veteran blah blah, experience blah blah. Actually this is a low key interesting question if Foles will even dress most games since the emergency QB rule isn't in effect anymore. I don't think they've had a 3QB room since that rule went into effect.

Daniels has looked better at G. Mustipher was fairly competent at C in his run last year. Not a physical specimin at all, but has gotten good marks on the x's and o's of making line calls. It is their best combo for now. But I think they will need to make serious interior line investments soon, so hopefully both rookie Tackles stick and are good.

That's the score I predicted elsewhere. And the Bears TD is definitely a meaningless 4Q score. Amplify the start Fields bandwagon to level 10.

I found the Twitter discourse and I'm deep in it now. Anywayy "the cap isn't real" isn't literally true, but it's true. And people are terrible at falling into sunk cost fallacies. Even guys who actually know a lot of cap specifics.

Huh? Haven't seen that. They did some cap maneuvers with Jimmy Graham to extend most of his cap hit to 2022. That was needed just to get back under the cap apparently, as they didn't have enough "in season" buffer. But yea, to cut Foles AND Quinn, I don't think they actually could do it. But I've felt for a while they probably should cut Foles just for the roster spot, but they'd need to restructure someone (likely Quinn) to defer some cap to accommodate Foles dead cap acceleration. But maybe just hang on to him until the trade deadline... Never know.

WHAT IF the Bears go 17-0 and win the SB because it turns out Cairo Santos can kick 90 yard FGs at a 99% clip, but dies on March 1st, and Justin Fields comes out as a member of the Proud Boys. Betcha wish you had taken the 6 win team with a Justin Fields ROY award, huh. Oh he personally vaccinates 80% of the vaccine hesitant population too. DUMMY.

I mean, if we get specific enough I'm sure you can draw up a 10 win campaign where a 7 win campaign has me more optimistic about 2022-2024. But in the whole, I'll take more wins. But yea, if a 10 win campaign is on the back of like Jimmy Graham catching 1000 yard and 10 TDs, Arob going 120/1400 and demanding a trade, Kmet suffering a Zach Miller like injury, Mooney regressing, and Roquan Smith being outplayed by Alec Ogletree. Yea, I'm not gonna feel great about the future. And they win 8 of those games by 4 points. And maybe there's just a really unlucky 7 win campaign where they have a huge positive point differential, all the young pieces show progress and Fields is ROY. And they just got a bunch of bad bounces. But we're working at the exremes I feel like of what's possible with those relative scenarios. As much as I want Fields to play, I actually don't think his long term success is affected by it one way or the other, and knowing nothing else, I'll take the wins.

I thought they signed him a week ago Re Dalton/Fields; I just cannot fathom a double digit win season with their schedule and loss off Fuller and Leno w/Dalton as the QB. Just for the record, former QB ROY Ben Roethlisberger 2004 Vince Young 2006 Matt Ryan 2008 Sam Bradford 2010 Cam Newton 2011 Robert Griffin III 2012 Dak Prescott 2016 Kyler Murray 2019 Justin Herbert 2020 The degree of confidence that a OROY would answer isn't overwhelming even. The degree of confidence (or lack thereof) about the standing of a 6 win team, despite that season from Fields, means about the roster Pace has built... Much stronger degree of confidence that we're f'd in the short term. But "hitting" on Fields via a OROY would nonetheless solidify Pace/Nagy IMO.

Look, I want Fields to play. I think he gives them a better shot to win actually. But answering the riddle is itself meaningless other than immediate fan satisfaction. If we're playing a dumb "would you rather" game I'm definitely taking the more wins. And I know that when Fields plays in 2022 he's got a playoff caliber support system. Just purely from a gut reaction, I'm fairly confident the short term outlook is pretty bad for teams with a top 15 QB season who finish with a bottom 5-10 record. Just anecdotally looking at past offensive ROY winners who were QBs and none really saw a ton of immediate team success, especially by the standard of a wasted season David presented (first round exit). But pretty much all those guys were on bad teams. So it wasn't their fault. But even the two of biggest successes of former ROY in Ryan and Newton didn't reach their SB until their second contract. So yea, give me team success all day because they're at least 2-3 seasons away from needing to have finalized their analysis on Fields. There's probably an incredibly narrow outcome of possibilities where in 4 seasons we're still asking ourselves what we have in Fields and being like, "damn, should a player him more his rookie season" Looked at another way, there is nothing that can happen in 2021 that would change the Bears decision making in regards to Fields in 2022. They should have the same outlook and plan no matter what.
