  1. I'd say at least 6 times out of 10 it's not the contract thats the issue. You just can't develop QBs or coach O. Like a lot of these failed QBs at some point were making average starter money and eventually average backup money, and those contracts will quickly turn into like bottom 10 starter if they're of any length. It wasn't the potential contract holding back the team, it was the coaching holding back the QB. I say 6 out of 10 because there's still plenty of true flame outs, but at any given time I think like half the league is just gonna ruin their QB. Bears have a guy at top who is explicitly not a QB ruiner. The leash is long.
  2. I haven't seen the update since Sunday but going into this week like 4 of the top 6 QBs in EPA/play were former top 10 picks cast off and on their 2nd+ team. The offense is putting up points. Caleb's leash is as long as that still happening. Brady was a system QB for like 6 years. Give these guys times unless they really give you reason not to.
  3. To put it another way : DVOA is always gonna be better with a longer sample as it replaces preseason SOS adjustment with in season SOS adjustment. Is it 6 games of SOS but just 4 games of ratings ( so you have selective sample) Or is it 4 games of ratings (smaller sample and more weighting towards preseason SOS). Neither of those things sound necessarily better than just taking the largest DVOA sample you can. Now an inherent limitation of DVOA is probably just being slow to react to change so we can use scouting and stuff to measure something like that... But a smaller sample is just kind of worse in most cases. Those games probably still tell us true things about teams most times.
  4. But DVOA is already a schedule adjusted metric that adjusts it's weighting throughout the season so it's not clear what excluding weeks would even do there.
  5. Thats actually additionally funny because DVOA also already has mechanisms in place to deal with opponent strength metric as a season progresses, so presumably this just kneecaps that portion or what, I don't know?
  6. Random sample size cutoffs are good if they favor my team.
  7. Obviously Caleb isn't Lamar, but that's not just Lamar pushing the spread up 14. They have a backup bad enough to help push that spread down too.
  8. I think he broke his dick
  9. That was annoying but yea not bad. You just have to know it gets called like that. Now on the flip side that late 2Q sack Caleb took certainly looked like helmet to helmet to helmet contact. Though the broadcast avoiding replaying a lot of bad or potential missed calls. For as much as the refs were flag happy against Bears they missed a few other way worse ones that could have gone against Washington. It was just poorly officiated. Whatever W is a W. Great sign Bears could have several miscues, piss poor kick coverage, have several scores swing against them from officiating... And still squeak out a win. Why I'll almost never blame officials for a loss. Find a way. Bears did. And Caleb wasn't at his best either.
  10. Turbodogshit refs tonight.
  11. On one hand TEs are often slow to develop. On the other hand https://www.pff.com/news/indianapolis-colts-tyler-warren-is-rewriting-rookie-history-at-the-tight-end-position
  12. Mark Sanchez who was in Indianapolis to do the Fox broadcast tomorrow was stabbed last night outside a nar and hospitalized with critical wounds. Though one report says he's now in stable condition.
  13. He coached my uncle there!
  14. Biggs reporting in Tribune that expectation is that it will be Benedet over Jones out of bye. Presumably Wright will be back, but if not Trapilo at RT.
  15. Yes. Sounds like a benching. I wouldn't discount the possibility of platooning vs full benching until they figure out the best LT solution. Via Nicholas Moreano on Twitter:
  16. Any hard and fast rules on RB value should be viewed skeptically IMO. I think the analytic view on RB will go down in history like early analytics if defense and catcher framing in baseball. I think Jeanty absolutely is a guy who had large enough questions that he shouldn't have been drafted that high. But that doesn't mean they don't exist. Same way that there are very few Gs who meet that criteria, but they do exist. As far as resources go... Resource restriction honestly isn't all that bad in the NFL. Way different than in baseball. But teams should take an economic/market based approach which means that value will always be relative and you can't create many concrete rules about resource allocation.
  17. Caleb on pace for 4,052 yards. Blue end zone effect is real. We're so back baby.
  18. Luckily my wife signed me and the youngest up for a toddler sports camp that's at 4pms on Sundays. We'll see if I catch any of this.
  19. The year is 2034. Kevin and George feel optimistic about the progress. These things take time. Shovels in the ground by 2035 is my expectation says Warren.
  20. I think it would be homerific to completely deny the reports but also, who cares. It's not definitive of anything. The person who comes off worse is Poles and if Ben is the right coach that will scarcely matter - he'll either fall in line as 3rd most important guy or hell be replaced in a few years. And if Caleb busts and Ben is still the right coach, also, we'll have the right coach. And if Ben busts well then /Bears
  21. I mean I can emphasize that social media is absolutely terrible for mental health even if you didn't have any unrelated issues. But yea he was absolutely unjustified in his attack that led to his firing and it was justified to let him go. Was he excusing at all what happened or just kind of like "this is what happened and I take responsibility for it"?
