  1. It's actually the reason I'm OK with having Gregg. I think he can adequately do the job as our closer (without the Cubs really being questioned that much) and allow us to leave Marmol in the role he's most valuable in. I'm not necessarily a fan of how we got Gregg, but I'm fine with using him as our closer.
  2. In terms of Gregg, I think my argument has been more that A - he is not terrible, as some people were trying to suggest (someone said he pitched like "howry" in the word filter sense) and B - I don't think Ceda had that much value. I don't necessarily defend trading Ceda for him when you can get that type of pitcher off the heap, usually. I just don't think Ceda's value was necessarily much greater than that. If that made any sense, whatsoever.
  3. I don't care if he's a closer or not, he's a very effective pitcher on a team with a very large payroll and very minimal top talent in line to replace people. Yes it is a no brainer. Paying $10M to a guy who is virtually assured of being used pretty much exclusively in situations with a lead in the 9th inning, often of 2 and 3 runs and almost always coming in with nobody on base is not my idea of a smart decision, and definitely not a no brainer. It doesn't matter how effective he generally is as a pitcher if his abilities are going to be put to use in situations in which almost any (LaTroy aside) decent relief pitcher can do the job.
  4. Defend not offering him arbitration. That wouldn't make much sense and I'll criticize the Cubs for not doing it if they don't.
  5. What does he have to gain by lying? He won't be back no matter what. I would imagine that leaving a favorable impression behind on the town that loved him for 10 years has some worth to him.
  6. For Christ's sake, a closer at likely $10+M a year, even on one year, is not a GD no brainer. But, like SSR said, just because Wood says it now, doesn't mean it is necessarily true (his willingness to take a one year deal here instead of a multi-year somewhere else).
  7. No, Hendry shouldn't be fired for removing emotion from the decision and not wanting to sign a closer with durability concerns, even if the option of a one year deal was present. Come on. You guys are really overstating Wood's value to this team.
  8. I would imagine that would be a pretty pricey one year deal if he was open to it. That, or Lou just didn't want to deal with his injury concerns another year.
  9. It is also highly possible that his numbers this season were significantly impacted negatively during a stretch in which it's suspected he was pitching hurt. Does that excuse them? No. Does it provide context for what we're looking at? Absolutely.
  10. No, I'd rather use him in the role that is most important to the team winning games and just manage his innings well instead of using him idiotically.
  11. thats not a comment on the cubs trade its a comment on the nats trade Not that it matters all that much or really means anything that someone at Rotoworld commented one way or another, but I'd say the first part of it is a comment on the Cubs trade.
  12. Explain why you'd rather have Gregg in for tougher situations and Marmol being used in the 9th inning with nobody on and a lead of 1-3 runs for the vast majority of his appearances. 7th and 8th inning guys tend to come in more often in tougher situations than closers.
  13. Why are people so convinced that Gregg will be used as setup and not closer? I'd say it's likely they want to go with Marmol, but I wouldn't say it's a sure thing. Maybe 60/40 IMO. There's a decent chance that Lou recognizes that Marmol's value is as a guy who comes in to put out fires. After all, that's what he used him for all year.
  14. Why do the Cubs owe Wood anything? I don't understand the mindset. Separate yourselves from the emotion. I love Woody too but I want this team in a position to win more than anything. Overpaying a closer is bad enough. Overpaying a closer with durability concerns is even worse.
  15. If Wood wants a multi-year deal at big money, we absolutely should not resign him. Letting him go is absolutely the right move given what he is almost certain to command. Millions and millions of dollars to relievers FTL.
  16. Is Derrick Rose going off in the 3rd? I saw his pts go from 2 to 10 on NBA.com from one glance to the next..
  17. Starting LFer vs. a closer great comparison
  18. Very good first half outside of those first few minutes and the time that Hughes was in there. Hughes needs to get hurt again or something. He's absolutely a negative when he's on the court.
  19. Jose Ceda = Roberto Novoa who eats more junk food
  20. Do you think he has more value than Gregg? Maybe, but it's certainly not a no-brainer. And it's not by much, if he does. I'm not sure what all the hand-wringing is about other than maybe misdirected emotions having to do with letting Wood go. Just my opinion, though.
  21. I really don't think Ceda has/had as much value as some of you guys are trying to suggest.
  22. You're right, maybe we could have fit Wood in at 3/30 if our financial situation were different. But in some ways, I'm sure glad we can't, because giving closers big money is stupid, no matter how much we love him.
