  1. The team is stuck. I beleive Maddux did this with Atlanta. Leading to the Braves having to trade away Millwood. In our case, we'd have to trade away the irreplaceable Kevin Gregg. The reason I asked was because of this post: How do we back out? As for the point before that, I'd rather not find money in the budget for Wood. I'd rather find all the money possible to accommodate a trade for Peavy and a bat in RF. I realize that I'm presenting a false choice there to some extent, but I think that might very well be the choice at hand, given what we're starting to hear about payroll and the possibility that money is a factor in the Peavy discussions (my guess is we're trying to find a way to dump off Marquis but that's a separate discussion) right now and the economic situation and all that crap. The point that the whole Wood's shoulder theory may be a bit far-fetched is valid.
  2. I thought he was saying that the Cubs might need to be pinching pennies right now and that $3M or whatever difference between Wood and Gregg could be crucial in terms of other moves in more important areas of the team... I'm not sure how legit that is or not... ?
  3. What exactly are the options when a player does accept arby and the team doesn't want him? I don't recall all the details of the Walker drama with San Diego.
  4. You know that people are mad about losing the picks and not mad about losing the chance of Wood accepting arbitration, right? Not chance. Risk.
  5. People are letting their emotional attachment to Wood multiply their reaction to this situation a good amount. Is it a bad move? Depends on a lot of things we don't really know about, really. At face value, it looks like it probably is. But, then again, that's face value and you'd have to think the Cubs know a lot more than we do about Kerry Wood. Is there anyway it's some no-brainer idiotic decision that should result in the firing of a GM? Not a chance.
  6. Yeah, I actually started to like him after the Harden trade, but now I'm just confused. How is it confusing? If Wood accepts arbitration, he's going to get at least $8 million, which will take the Cubs out of the Peavy sweepstakes, and really limit his options for a RF most likely. The only confusing part is why he traded for Gregg and let Wood go to begin with if Wood supposedly would have accepted a 1 year deal. Or why he can't trade Gregg after offering arbitration to Wood? Jim Hendry thinks Kevin Gregg is a better pitcher than Kerry Wood. Because things like the durability of a pitcher who has had constant injury problems and almost gave up on the game a little over a year ago don't factor into his value?
  7. Is it possible that the Cubs doctors know something we don't about Wood's arm? Remember, it was only a year and a half ago that he almost gave up on baseball completely. Then "miraculously" his arm felt better. I can't blame them for not wanting any risk of having to pay him $8M+ if that's the case, especially considering the circumstances. The question that would leave is why even bring him back last year, then? But who knows what may have presented itself this season.
  8. I don't care. He's not getting in via the coaches vote. Harris will get that, I'm sure. If they did the bench by the fan vote runners up, fine. But Rose would get overlooked by the coaches just cause he's a rookie. Plus I'm selfish and don't really give a damn. I would've voted for Geo even if McCann's or Martin's numbers were significantly better. "...and this is why the fan vote sucks, blah blah blah" I don't care and it's not like it's some absurdity like Varitek getting voted in.
  9. Rose's best hope is in the fan voting as a starter. Do your part!
  10. Not that I think there's anything to that message board posting, but I believe Atkins was mentioned as a guy Towers wanted a while back by Bruce Levine.
  11. There was a horrendous stretch of officiating where the Bulls got completely shafted that really allowed the Spurs to pull ahead. NBA refs make me sick, but then again the Bulls got those calls in the 90s. The no-call on Noc followed by the flagrant and T on Noc made me absolutely sick, though. Then the no-call when Gordon got fouled on the 3. The Bulls didn't fight back at all since, though. And wtf Hunter and Rose should never be on the court together. Hunter should come in a few minutes to give Rose a breather, and that's it.
  12. Because I think he's going to New York with LeBron. Bosh is a way, way better two-way player though, you're right. In fairness to reality, I have a hard time seeing Phoenix letting Amare go anyway. I think Amare will be dying to leave in a couple of years.
  13. loooooooooool Rozner takes his idiocy to a new level by including a guy that was traded, what, 2 weeks ago?
  14. guys...go look at peavy's postseason stats...they are not good...neither are harden's how many of you are really that ok with derosa being our everyday right fielder? i think it is much wiser to try and get someone to bat leadoff and fill the RF spot you're right. screw those two pitchers who are among the most dominant in all of baseball. we should get orlando hernandez. he is clutch in the playoffs.
  15. The players are competitive professionals. They will do their best, at at least a reasonable imitation, regardless of whether they respect the manager. Which is not what the question was, but you're right.
  16. You seem like you would have commanded a lot of respect from the players. I don't think respect won them any games either. Plus all managers should have respect from the players. It shouldn't be that hard. Now you're getting a bit absurd. If you honestly think players would respect some fan off the streets as their manager, you're delusional.
  17. Assuming we don't make a deal involving the rotation, how is the 2009 rotation worse than the 2008 rotation that won the NL Central? Zambrano, Harden (part time), Dempster, Lilly, Marquis, + Marshall >>>>>>> Zambrano, Dempster, Lilly, Marquis, Gallagher/Marshall Why is Harden not a part of the 2008 rotation that won the NL Central?
  18. Wrong. Absolutely wrong. You think we won all those games cuz of Lou being a great manager? The only thing he had to do was that whenever we had a lead, just put Marmol in to hold them. We won because we had great players. Lou didn't have much to do with it. I could have managed that team and gotten the same amount of victories. All managers make dumb moves. Lou has his quirks (the all righty lineups vs lefties, the overuse of certain pitchers and just overall odd usage of the bullpen, etc.), but be happy we don't have one of the really bad ones and leave it at that. Having Dusty Baker fresh on the mind, this shouldn't be so hard.
  19. His overall point is kinda right, though. Lou's fixation with matchups gets a bit absurd at times. In general, I like what Lou does, but, for instance, I'm not at all a fan of the all righty lineups vs lefty starters.
  20. Thing is, some people thought Beasley was the best player, regardless of position. Anyway, I, like most, was on the Rose bandwagon all the way. Thank jeebus for that 1.7% shot.
  21. Amare, Bosh, or Boozer for me... ...btw Ginobili returned for San Antonio tonight, but Parker is likely out a while longer. It'll be a tough game but might be winnable.
  22. that's what i was thinking. i was all hyped up for rose banging down the winner at the buzzer and then when he missed and hughes drained it i was like "umm... oh yeah... we won. sweet" was still a pretty epic last few minutes by Rose... just would've been so cool storybook-wise if he had drained the last shot.. of course, if he hits that, jazz probably go down the court for an uncontested dunk in 3 seconds for the win.
