  1. We'll have to agree to disagree. In the article he says what the numbers say the most likely outcome is. He concedes that his prediction is only the second most likely outcome (so, not THAT far out on a limb). The final prediction means little, IMO. The substance of the article is what matters.
  2. It was Nate Silver... Oh, and in the actual article he said that the most probable outcome was Cubs in 4, (probably) losing game one. He just said "F it" and went with the sweep prediction for the hell of it.
  3. Nah. 1984 game 5. I was a wreck. I was in college, watching in my apartment, and when the grounder went through Durham's legs, I walk over tothe kitchen, picked up a chair and repeatedly smashed it against the wall until it was a pile of toothpicks. Never said a word, and nor did my roomate. I remember that Sunday afternoon, how in the hell did San Diego, a team with four less wins than the Cubs get home field advantage? - that 2-3 format was a load of crap. Back then they alternated home field from year to year between the eastern and western division champs, right?
  4. Considering I was thinking we'd win this series but lose the first game all along, no, I can't really say I've changed my mind, even though the loss stings.
  5. If it's not, it's pretty much as damn close as it gets.

  7. Offense doesn't get a pass but Lou is supposed to put the team in the best position to win and I don't believe he did. I blame the offense and Marmol too. Can you really blame the offense for getting shut down by Brandon Webb? Well, I'm not surprised but yes, they could have done better. Yea. A little luck, and they would've. Lots of hard hit balls today. More than I expected, honestly. They weren't really being patient, but I suppose that's the book on Webb. You have to get him while he's trying to get ahead early. That's what UK's take on it was, at least.
  8. Being OK with it and being able to not freak out and ultimately accept it are two different things.

  10. We just lost a freaking playoff game, what the hell do you expect? Perspective? This is the game we were supposed to lose. Considering I, and many, have us taking this in 4, the first game being the loss, I find it hard to get extremely worked up about this loss. Yea, I'm pissed. We had it tied late and had a shot to steal it. But the series is hardly even close to over.
  11. A - This was the game we were supposed to lose. B - Bringing in Marmol was not a bad move. It just didn't work out.
  12. My worst nightmare is Prior returning to form with some other team after recovering from the surgery.
  13. The Cubs have basically been world beaters for 4 months, short of 3 weeks when their best hitting outfielder was out.
  14. Why? They aren't that good. The Diamondbacks are worse. I want to believe that, but the records tell a different story. And I don't think anyone could argue the DBacks had it rougher in the West. I'm with goons. I think we can win the series, but it will be a fairly tough task and we need to play good Cub baseball throughout. Wins and losses aren't the best predictive statistic. Look at all the rest of their numbers. They paint an entirely different picture. The 98 Cubs also won 90 games (albeit in 163 games). Mediocre teams sometimes luck into good/great records. I think this is a case of the Cubs having played a bit better than their record and the D'Backs playing significantly worse than theirs. Pythagoras agrees. All this means nothing though. They could sweep us, we could sweep them..or it could be a hard fought series. All the numbers can give us is what the most likely outcomes are.
  15. Chuck Norris doesn't hold a candle to Geovany Soto.
  16. Yeah, they keep showing some rockies game and trying to convince me it's the playoffs. Yeah right, stupid TBS. lawlz :)
  17. Any comments on TBS's production? I didn't think it was too bad in the one game playoff.
  18. Come on, no way are the Red Sox fans superstitious! I'm confused at the reference to Red Sox fans...
  19. Only a moron would boo him. They didn't boo Gonzalez mercilessly the next season.
  20. Why would you judge him against the inept history of this franchise rather than against his actual, you know, competition? Ok, what other GM's with the similar Lengths of service have had similar success? I wouldn't call winning two divisions by default in five years, with mediocre teams, mind you, and hiring a manager (a manager known for abusing pitchers, no less) who squandered your talented young pitching a successful tenure.
  21. Actually, yes. I was part of ESPN's "Five Reasons You Can't Blame Bartman" special. I hated to see this kid get tarred and feathered. Alex Gonzalez ought to send Bartman Christmas cards every year. The thing I hate about the networks is their fascination with Bartman and the goat. Yep, I guarantee you that the goat and Bartman will be mentioned within the first 2 minutes of the pregame.
  22. I was at that game so that one is forever in my memory. I was at the Neifi-bunting-with-2-out-in-the-9th game. Just terrible. And equally embedded into my memory. I was on a rooftop for that game. Wasn't that Woody's first start back?
  23. And look at his RIDICULOUS odds. Yea, a team IN the post season has 25-1 odds of taking it. Right. The Indians at 15-1? He lists his big concern for the Indians as Borowski. Bullpens are important, but why do so many media people want to overstate it so much...especially the closer????
  24. LOL.. concerns about the bullpen.. Howry, Marmol, and Wood all can be depended on to shut down teams right now.
