    Offense doesn't get a pass but Lou is supposed to put the team in the best position to win and I don't believe he did. I blame the offense and Marmol too. Can you really blame the offense for getting shut down by Brandon Webb?

    We just lost a freaking playoff game, what the hell do you expect? Perspective? This is the game we were supposed to lose. Considering I, and many, have us taking this in 4, the first game being the loss, I find it hard to get extremely worked up about this loss. Yea, I'm pissed. We had it tied late and had a shot to steal it. But the series is hardly even close to over.

    A - This was the game we were supposed to lose. B - Bringing in Marmol was not a bad move. It just didn't work out.

    My worst nightmare is Prior returning to form with some other team after recovering from the surgery.

    The Cubs have basically been world beaters for 4 months, short of 3 weeks when their best hitting outfielder was out.

    Why? They aren't that good. The Diamondbacks are worse. I want to believe that, but the records tell a different story. And I don't think anyone could argue the DBacks had it rougher in the West. I'm with goons. I think we can win the series, but it will be a fairly tough task and we need to play good Cub baseball throughout. Wins and losses aren't the best predictive statistic. Look at all the rest of their numbers. They paint an entirely different picture. The 98 Cubs also won 90 games (albeit in 163 games). Mediocre teams sometimes luck into good/great records. I think this is a case of the Cubs having played a bit better than their record and the D'Backs playing significantly worse than theirs. Pythagoras agrees. All this means nothing though. They could sweep us, we could sweep them..or it could be a hard fought series. All the numbers can give us is what the most likely outcomes are.

    Only a moron would boo him. They didn't boo Gonzalez mercilessly the next season.

    Why would you judge him against the inept history of this franchise rather than against his actual, you know, competition? Ok, what other GM's with the similar Lengths of service have had similar success? I wouldn't call winning two divisions by default in five years, with mediocre teams, mind you, and hiring a manager (a manager known for abusing pitchers, no less) who squandered your talented young pitching a successful tenure.

    Actually, yes. I was part of ESPN's "Five Reasons You Can't Blame Bartman" special. I hated to see this kid get tarred and feathered. Alex Gonzalez ought to send Bartman Christmas cards every year. The thing I hate about the networks is their fascination with Bartman and the goat. Yep, I guarantee you that the goat and Bartman will be mentioned within the first 2 minutes of the pregame.

    I was at that game so that one is forever in my memory. I was at the Neifi-bunting-with-2-out-in-the-9th game. Just terrible. And equally embedded into my memory. I was on a rooftop for that game. Wasn't that Woody's first start back?

    And look at his RIDICULOUS odds. Yea, a team IN the post season has 25-1 odds of taking it. Right. The Indians at 15-1? He lists his big concern for the Indians as Borowski. Bullpens are important, but why do so many media people want to overstate it so much...especially the closer????

    They're the sexy choice. And I don't understand why. The Cubs got their butts handed to them by every NL contender not named Milwaukee. I think they can win the series, but I don't see how they can be considered the favorite. Sure, the rest of the country seems to want to see the Cubs win, because of the story, but I don't see how that makes them the favorite. Have you seen the Diamondbacks' roster? I'm pretty sure they have Augie Ojeda getting regular PT. The run differential thing has been played to death, so I won't even go there, but yea....

    He asked you to help him combat his pessimism - I don't think that channeling the ghost of managers past as your source of optimism is the way to do that. Have a heart and lie to the guy, or make something up. He could just read the very well supported BP article referenced in this very thread.

    I'm staying at a cheap motel not far from Wrigley. It's only costing me $65 a night. Of course, I think I'm going to bring my own sheets. At that price, I'm not sure what the bed will look like. What's the name of the hotel? Sheffield House. Dear god, I'm reading some reviews of that place online now. It's scaring me. As I said, I'm bringing my own sheets. Oh, and "I didn't have a very nice night." LOL
