Man, Jed got ensorcelled by a 26 strong innings from Zeferjahn and made him his premiere bullpen addition at the deadline. Whaddya know, he immediately turned back into the same walk and HR pitcher he’s always been.

I read somewhere not to expect him back until after the new year. Have you seen a more optimistic timeline? That would have him out against Texas Tech, Duke, UConn, and Missouri, as well as the first couple of conference games.

This is such a bummer because Mirk is really good and fun as hell to watch/root for, but I think this Illini roster has enough talent to weather his absence.

Yeah this is kind of where I’m landing, is it a good value trade? No, almost certainly not. Would I rather have Detmers for Ayers/Kepley +? 100%. But boy am I glad that 60% of starts will no longer be going to Assad, Rea, and Peterson.

I definitely have all three of Hartshorn, Ayers, and Rojas sitting in the same bucket. In front of that bucket I have a big sign that says “Will trade for pitching.”

I’ll admit to suffering some PTSD from last postseason but that two of our three locks to start playoff games are Boyd and Shota doesn’t inspire me with confidence. One more SP to throw into the mix in the next 80 minutes, rental or controlled, would be really nice. Holmes or someone of his ilk/Gausman/Boyd/Shota isn’t the 90s Braves by any stretch, but they can generally keep you in games. And if the wheels come off one of them down the stretch, you can dip into the depth of Cabrera, Peterson, some sort of Brown/Steele piggyback scenario, etc.

There’s as good a chance that we’re selling low on Ayers next trade deadline as there is that he’s a significant contributor to the big league club. Meanwhile the 4 guys we’re penciling into our 2027 rotation have combined for ~140 big league innings this year.
