I was expecting a bunt. Chance to put the tying run in scoring position, having your choice of who to hit next with the pitcher's spot due up, and most importantly, LaRussa being the one making the decision? I was surprised when he hit away.

If Manny Parra is a top 2 starter then we're in great shape, because he's Sean Marshall without the MLB success. -
Joba, you don't want to straddle the plate when Youkilis is bearing down on you and there's no chance of you getting him out.

That's not even close to a good comparison. do explain. vitters is somewhat of a project whose trade value, if he pans out, is likely to be highest 3 years down the road when he's continued to hit well into AA. wieters is a known commodity who is likely to come in and destroy minor league pitching right away. wieters offers more trade value on the open market at this time, which is something that should be very important to a "built to win now" team like the cubs. Admittedly, when I made the first post I was under the impression LaPorta wasn't drafted until the late teens, but the point still applies. Vitters v. Wieters was not a slam dunk case of BPA, and drafting guys because they'll have more trade value right away is a short-sighted way to go about things. We took like 20 straight college players after Vitters last year who would have trade value earlier than a high school guy, and not too many of them have dynamite trade value right now.

You know we had something like an 8.5 game lead on them not long ago. Even when they were up 8.5 games last year, the pythagorean records were within a game or so. After their hot stretch that has brought them to within 3.5 games of us, our pythagorean record is 9 games better than theirs.

None of these are super likely, but Hudson, Oswalt, Bedard, Greinke, even Peavy are on teams that are pretty much done for the year. EDIT: Also, Rich Hill.

PAP is Pitcher Abuse Points, a metric from BP. Marshall and Gallagher are strong insurance policies if Hill can't get the magic back.

Buy low on Burnett, hope Hill has turned a corner. Best case is Zambrano/Dempster/Burnett/Lilly/Hill forming the deepest rotation in the game. Worst case one of Dempster/Burnett/Hill should be very strong to complement Z in the playoff rotation.

Jacob McGee? Lewis Rollins? It's times like these I wish I had bought the BA Prospect Handbook. Looking through the Rays affiliates, Jeremy Hellickson had an 83/5 K/BB ratio in 76.2 IP at High A. That's not a typo.

Typical Cubs/Cards tilt. Do blowouts ever happen when these two teams play. I think I remeber a game in 98 where the Cards scored a bajillion runs in the first inning but that's about all I can remember. We were blowing them out the one year up 8 I think and proceeded to lose on Pujols' 3rd bomb. Taguchi of all people went deep too, what an awful game that was.

Wonder what the gameplan is here. I say go with Cotts thru Ankiel, then Gallagher through at least Molina.

Great at bat by Theriot, good job of wearing down Perez in his second inning of work. Remember that if Lee or Ramirez get big hits.

Perez is a power right hander, he's more likely to mow down Johnson, or worse, induce a double play ball. It was nicely placed and gave him a chance at a hit, so it's not too terrible a move.

Who does he replace though? He's not better than Quentin, Drew, Bradley, or Sizemore.

He was awfully close though, and could've short hopped it if he just missed. Can't blame him either way, IMO. Attaboy Marshall, way to bear down

Seriously, the only thing worse than how Johnson handled that was how terrible Mather looked trying to catch it.
