  1. it's almost like non-bunters bunting against one of the best pitchers in the game is hard
  2. aw yiss He's up this inning. Doubt he gets to pitch the 5th. Terrific, 5 innings of bullpen is just as good.
  3. Buck calls a good game, he just needs to not editorialize. So far I haven't noticed and to be honest his voice is synonymous with the highest profile games so it's already an improvement on Vasgersian. I give Vasgersian a semi-pass, since I've listened to his Javy "That's barely humanly possible!" call about a 1000 times. Yeah I didn't think Vasgersian was bad by any stretch(preferable to the TBS booth last year), and certainly leaps and bounds better than Costas.
  4. He's actually on record saying he thinks the Cubs winning a WS would be awesome and he'd love to call it. Buck calls a good game, he just needs to not editorialize. So far I haven't noticed and to be honest his voice is synonymous with the highest profile games so it's already an improvement on Vasgersian.
  5. I'm mostly just marking the play for future reference but even if that throw beat Javy he sure better have been safe on the plate blocking rule
  6. Right, was not intended as a counterpoint, I just heard the broadcast allude to it and found it fascinating. Although I will say the Indians pen certainly gives them more margin for error than the average team when it comes to rotation depth.
  7. The Indians have trailed for 1 inning in this postseason, the Red Sox scored 1 in the top of the 1st in Game 1 and the Indians tied it up in the bottom of the 2nd.
  8. I think Giants made me more nervous because their lineup wasn't as good. If the Dodgers club a bunch of extra base hits and win the series, welp they were a good team. I can handle that a lot better than even year magic and Joe Panik BABIPing his way to NLDS MVP. I'm also a little bit more confident that playing a team that strikes out a normal amount will reduce the likelihood of silly nonsense(like Panik and Gillaspie) happening, even if only slightly.
  9. Yeesh. Jansen is a free agent, so screw him I guess. He's thrown 3 of 5 days for a combined 80 pitches, the closest he came to that this year was throwing 3 of 6 days for 59 pitches, and when he pitched the next day he blew a 1 run save.
  10. That's a good point, here's the time through the order numbers since the all-star break: 1st time: .596 OPS 2nd time: .741 3rd time: .865
  11. It'll be interesting to see how Roberts wants to handle Maeda and the pen tonight. Jansen almost certainly isn't available, plus Dayton got beat up pretty good in the NLDS and confidence in him might not be super high. That trickle down means that there might not be as much confidence in the middle relievers, which is especially important since (as Brett noted today) Maeda gets hammered by the time thru the order penalty: 1st time: .550 OPS 2nd time: .626 3rd time: .887 With that in mind, I think baserunners are maybe even more important than pitch count today, and double plays more damaging than first pitch pop outs. They're intertwined, but I'd love for the top of the order to hit for the 3rd time in the 5th inning because that forces some real hard decisions.
  12. That is what cracks me up the most about the Cubs fatigue stuff. You know who's even more sick of talk about lovable losers and curses and 108 years? CUBS FANS. Also, sorry that the Cubs are by far the best team in baseball with a rabid fan base and are a more compelling story than the Dodgers' make-a-wish campaign for injured pitchers.
  13. The confusing thing to me is that if it's a money thing, they sure put themselves in a decent sized hole with that signing bonus. Do they really think they're going to get more than $100,000 of profit on Tebow jersey sales? Are they going to let him start every day for Ft Lucie when it looks unlikely he can even hit at Jordan-at-Birmingham levels?
  14. Arrieta's starts are guaranteed to feature an opposing LHP, so keeping Montero off and having Ross catch him if you're worried about game calling/framing is a pretty easy compromise to make.
  15. Other starters of interest against each other this year: Hendricks: 8 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 6/1 K/BB, 1 HR, 1 HBP Arrieta: 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 8/4 K/BB Montgomery: 5 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 5/4 K/BB, 1 HBP Urias: 11 IP, 14 H, 7 R(6 ER), 12/3 K/BB, 3 HR Lackey, Kershaw, and Hill did not pitch in those 7 games.
  16. Yep, Maeda made 32 starts, dearly departed Scott Kazmir was 2nd with 26, and Kershaw made 21. In other fun trivia, the one run Lester gave up against the Dodgers was a home run by Hernandez, who wasn't on the NLDS roster and doesn't look to be a probable addition for the NLCS.
  17. Lester faced the Dodgers in both series, and unsurprisingly did quite well. June 1st in Chicago: 9 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 10/0 K/BB, 1 HR August 28th in LA: 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 6/2 K/BB That's a 0.60 ERA, 0.60 WHIP, and 8 K/BB for those scoring at home. Maeda managed to avoid the Cubs in those 2 series.
  18. The alternatives are Hill(would be on 2 days rest after throwing 55 pitches on 3 days rest) or Urias(would be on 2 days rest after throwing 30 pitches in his first series action). Given that they made multiple starts on 3 days rest to avoid starting Urias already, and their kid gloves handling of him all year long, I'm not sure they're super keen on him starting a game on 2 days rest even if he did only throw 2 innings/30 pitches.
  19. Tripp Gibson as a replay official seems like a joke that went a little bit too far.
  20. Things I didn't know: the Nationals/Expos have won 1 playoff series in their 48 year existence, the 1981 NLDS which featured a minor league style first half winner v. second half winner because the players went on strike.
  21. Lackey starting with Montgomery entering the game the moment anyone reaches base the 2nd time thru the order is probably the best case scenario. By starting Lackey you ensure that Montgomery(who could conceivably go 5 innings himself) gets matched up with the lefty heavy lineup, at least to start. You could apply the same approach to Zastryzny too, I think he and Montgomery are better used as immediate and multi-inning relief of different starters than as a combo.
