  1. I'm not watching, but I'd believe it considering that Quintana's only peer in command is Lester. Not as easy to frame when the ball can be diving all over the place like it does with Montgomery, Butler, and Arrieta. It's also hard to frame pitches that are smoked off the wall(Lackey).
  2. I'm into it, Gausman's the pitcher they should want anyway. I think you suggested it, but I'd take Gausman and throw him in the pen. Gausman gives up a ton of first inning runs. Bullpen seems like a lousy place for him. That is not how it works, the stuff he'd have as a reliever is not the same as it is as a starter. Also, Gausman hasn't been *good* the first time through the order, but hitters improve with each subsequent PA.
  3. Britton's pricetag is probably outrageous(he also just had a forearm injury), but Brach might be a nice addition for the stretch run and Koji replacement for next year.
  4. Neuse and Lazardo were both in the Nats Top 10 on MLB.com, FWIW. It seems like it might be comparable to something like Grimm + De La Cruz + Filiere(who can't be traded but if you want to match it up he's the closest I see)? If anything that probably undersells the return, but they did get both Doolittle and Madson so if you were curious about the cost for just Doolittle that might have been it.

  6. Where did you see that quote? I don't recall that from an earlier read of this, for example: https://theathletic.com/75441/2017/07/13/theo-epstein-speaks-about-trading-for-jose-quintana/ To answer the question, I would guess rental reliever, although looking over the list I don't see any obvious candidates. Maybe Nicasio or Watson?
  7. yes but was Maddon within biting range when he said that
  8. Craig Brooks has a 15/2 K/BB in his last 5 outings(8.2 IP) for Tennessee, it'll be interesting to see if he's turning a corner and regaining the form he had at Myrtle Beach(20.1 IP, 0.44 ERA, 30/6 K/BB, 1 HR).
  9. If you treat the payroll pre-Quintana(~175 million) as a ceiling,or at least a threshold we know is possible, and count 20 million for the arb guys(the only other one is Grimm, I assume Rondon is non-tendered), then you're at ~120 million give or take after Quintana and Gray. Baez, Schwarber, Happ, Edwards, Contreras, Montgomery, Almora are auto-renewals(assuming none go for Gray) and you're at less than 125 million for 17 guys, with relievers and bench players left to fill out the roster.
  10. I've always thought that stopping and planting on that play like Bryant did was faster than the jump throws that are common among the Machados of the world.
  11. lol who was that in the bullpen tracking Schwarber's bomb edit: Grimm, awesome
  12. Pierre's Cubs fWAR is predicated on his +14 UZR, which was a pretty extreme outlier.
  13. That's an interesting thought, if you believe in Montgomery and maybe have some pessimism on Gray's health, then you might not view them as terribly different values, and adding more depth like Almora, or Caratini, etc tips you over the edge. Whether that's feasible probably depends on how willing other teams are to give up more premier prospects for Gray. The Yankees might be more desperate after Pineda's injury, for example.
  14. If any team could make it work, it'd probably be Oakland with their penchant for guys who don't necessarily have super high ceilings, although I agree it would probably require either Almora or Happ.
  15. With Lackey technically on the DL, the active roster is at 24. yeah but isn't he slated to pitch one of the upcoming games I went back and checked that Sharma tweet and noticed Butler wasn't a part of the schedule(which included Montgomery twice), so when Lackey does need to come back on Tuesday then he's probably going back to Iowa.
  16. With Lackey technically on the DL, the active roster is at 24.
  17. Theo's unabridged comments: https://theathletic.com/75441/2017/07/13/theo-epstein-speaks-about-trading-for-jose-quintana/ A few highlights: - They did a lot of investigation(both scouting and analytical) on Quintana's 2017 and feel good that it's an aberration - They're interested in adding more pieces at the deadline, although (paraphrasing) this deal sets them up to not feel forced into any moves - Hahn admitted after the deal was done that there was no way for it to get done without both Eloy and Cease
  18. Think I saw somewhere on twitter that he's in line to start Sunday. I'm rooting for this just because I'll be at next Saturday and Sunday's games and this would line him up to start one of them. Quintana confirmed for Sunday. [tweet] [/tweet]
  19. Tough break everyone, 4-5 years from now the Cubs are screwed. Plus if you think Theo is going to give up on player development and not exhaust every resource not tied to the major league club to rebuild the farm you are a moron All free agent contracts continue in perpetuity and the draft was disbanded, if you don't got the prospects now you might as well fold the franchise before The Rock's Inauguration.
  20. This is the best one IMO: Tough break everyone, 4-5 years from now the Cubs are screwed.
  21. That Brewerfan thread is delightful. They're so glad the Cubs traded prospects for a good player since that means the prospects can't be good players for the Cubs or be traded for a good player later. Some also seem to think Quintana-caliber pitchers are regularly reaching Free Agency.
  22. Still all for Gausman if you're talking about someone like Monty 2016. this is exactly who i keep coming back to in my mind since he's been brought around here quite a bit. in a hypothetical Gausman deal, does he go to the pen or the minors for the remainder of the year? I kinda want to trade for Gausman and then put him in the pen permanently.
