  1. It's not my favorite idea, but I don't have the visceral negative reaction to it. I do like it better as a tool to limit extra innings, although among these options I like 'start with the bases loaded' best: http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/22466504/three-box-answers-baseball-extra-innings-issue
  2. I don't have specific suggestions, but at that age and especially if it's 5 v 5, I'd spend all kinds of time working on developing foot skills and comfort on the ball. That'll be way more helpful in the present and future than understanding shape/formation, practicing corner kicks, or even shooting.
  3. Stolen from Deadspin, but relevant to every Barstool drama ever:
  4. A press release about how Tebow was released would suffice.
  5. I'm on board with the Reds making improvements, but I wouldn't quite go that far. Losing Cozart's 5 wins on top of having several position player regression candidates(Gennett, Duvall, Barnhart, Suarez), plus the lack of another team in the division truly tanking(even the Pirates are rebuilding on the fly) means they're still pretty squarely 5th in the division for me.
  6. Said another way, Andrew Cashner has 2 more years of service time and has only made 6 million more than Rizzo.
  7. I hope it becomes like the Lester thing and teams keep running themselves into outs in key situations. Oh yeah, some overzealous dummy(I'm looking at you, Tommy Pham) is gonna wind up with 5 CS in a 3 game series and have an aneurysm at the end of it.
  8. That's 43 steals in 70 starts. I don't want to be flippant, but I also don't care even a little bit.
  9. We also dropped a 38 year old starter in the process. The Cubs rotation next year in approximate order is 31, 29, 28, 34, 28. A 28 year old is first up if anyone falters. The Brewers far inferior rotation is 30, 25, 30, 32, and 28, with 31 year old Miley as 6th starter. Also, to that poster's original point, 6 of the Cubs' 13 pitchers were signed in free agency, 3 in the rotation. The Brewers? 5 of 13 and 2-3 in the rotation depending on where you think Miley lands. Someone should tell them that even when you play in the kiddie pool you still get wet.
  10. I jumped to make the Kerry Wood joke and completely forgot Lester has that number now.
  11. Yes, the infrequent stuff Rian Watt did for them(although he's now at Fangraphs) was very good too. I will say, I wasn't sure if this was the CSN influence or not, but Mooney's stuff has a sensationalist, Wittenmyerian cynicism at times that rubs me the wrong way. He's still the best with sourced rumors, and maybe more time around Sharma will help, but it's just enough to annoy me in a fair number of his columns.
  12. They just know he's not gonna take Kerry's number out of respect.
  13. Agree that Darvish and Almora seem the most likely. At first I thought it was Schwarber, but man .950 is a high high bar, he'd have to hit like .285 with best ever power. Chatwood could happen especially with Hickey, maybe I think that's less likely because unless someone else tanks you're then in full-on cackle mode with the strength of the team. Also, thank you for keeping Hendricks humble. Finally, some doubters that he can continue what he's doing. The one that isn't listed here is something like the Conteras option, but for Russell.
  14. As if not having a guaranteed deal was bad enough for Grimm, they brought in his evil twin to thunderdome for the last bullpen spot.
  15. Cahill? Tommy Hunter was a pretty big guy for the 6 weeks they had him too.
  16. Lester is prob the closest thing to a fat guy on the roster Yeah, I was looking for a giant baby-looking guy with a big ol' gut, and was let down when I realized that was him at the front. Start snacking more, dammit! Too bad Williams Perez shot his coach on accident, he'd have been your guy. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/images/players/head_shot/554234.jpg
  17. Sincerely, good for Chris Mitchell. Also sincerely, KATOH was basically useless.
  18. I believe Chatwood is one of the beardfaces, either next to Lester or behind Zastryzny.
  19. Look, I know a lot of you think being a baseball robot is the thing that all the cool kids do, but it's more than a little odd to be talking about how you could afford the guy you just signed because the guy you traded for the year before is on a VERY team-friendly deal. Like, everyone knows it's true and he's right, but it just seems like one of those things where you don't talk it up to the press. What's the point? Similarly, I know it's en vogue to be on the lookout for exploitation of players given the current offseason(and to an extent, political) climate, but I don't see a big issue in clarifying the logic behind the moves when there's a direct correlation. Quintana is on a team friendly deal, and part of that is a function of the arbitration system, but he's on a team friendly deal because of a conscious choice he made to lock in tens of millions of dollars that were far from certain at the time. I'd love for the Quintana's of the world to get a larger share of the pie in the future too, but I don't think it's gauche to point out that the contract he signed with another team facilitated other moves.
  20. I'd feel the Quintana comments come off worse if he would have been FA eligible but was getting like 5 mil a year, or if he were just 1st year arb eligible or something. He signed an extension after his first good season in the big leagues that even with his best possible outcome realized, will cost him about 25 million or so. That's a perfectly fine trade off to make for a SP of all people, and especially considering he'd still be arbitration eligible without the extension, it's hard for me to get too worked up about Quintana feeling like a pawn.
  21. I assume that Sullivan is making notes for his next column on the huge blunder of Darvish wearing a plaid shirt that clashes with the pinstripes.
  22. It is just absurd that for as good as the 2016 team was projected to be, 2018 is projected one win better in the rotation(when you add Darvish), one win better for position players, and one win better in the bullpen. I don't think anyone should count on 100+ wins as a rule, but I think if that happens it's gonna be apparent pretty quickly. A lot of people have labeled last year's performance as regression to the mean instead of potentially being a WS/injury hangover, and there's a whole lot of potential for a pop-up 5 win season from the likes of Contreras/Russell/Baez.
  23. I hope that is true for Jake's sake because I would like him not to be the avatar of this CBA by waiting until June to sign.
