Probably not easy to find, but I'd be interested to see how that is affected by count. I could see a maximizing strategy being something like"You're allowed 1 swing in a non-hitters count that doesn't have 2 strikes per game". Not in the literally enforced sense, but it's concisely distills the logic.

Has anyone done any studies on if you get the ball to first faster with the quick jump throw or planting and gunning, like they've done for running through 1B v. sliding? Every time I watch one of these plays(which are impressive) I can't help but think they're giving up so much velocity that unless they've been running for like 10 steps they'd be better off getting the whole of their arm behind it with a slower release.

Lewandowski is extremely fortunate to still be on the field right now, got a yellow that was at least a light orange tackle, then basically did the same thing again a couple minutes later with no foul or card.

It's the Pittsburgh home opener, though why it's at 4 instead of at 1 or 2 is beyond me. It's the 12 minutes that has me most confused. A Pittsburgh newspaper tells me that it's a special gametime for opening day since 412 is a Pittsburgh area code.

i suppose they might be playing a 5 with James in the middle of loftus-cheek at WB (or vice versa? he's used loftus-cheek as a progressive CB a couple times, though never in a game of this magnitude. Yeah that makes more sense than "Ruben Loftus-Cheek, #10 for a Champions League game where we need to score several goals"

I love that he had to have drawn up that lineup, checked it and noticed it essentially creates Loftus-Cheek v. Modric, and decided "yeah that'll work" Also, Werner against a team that doesn't have to be all that interested in scoring/getting high up the field?

He was pretty good last year on the surface. 30 appearances, 2.14 ERA, 2.01 FIP unless the underlying numbers suggest he was much worse 0 hr in 33.2 IP, ,267babip was the lowest of his career, no increase in velocity. The only thing that suggested any real progress was a change in pitch usage. You'd have preferred he given up more home runs? His xERA and xFIP were fine last year too.

Also, why do it with Villar, who has above average swing and miss and has the platoon advantage, and not Madrigal, who is a contact machine and is right handed? Feels like it might've just been a straight steal and Villar just swung.

They're up 7 runs, Steele was under 70 pitches, and 7-8-9 is due up, I think we can be okay with him going out there

They have 9 runs in 12 innings against the best 1-2 SP in the league in terrible offensive conditions. They'd have 2-3 HR if not for that last part already. Enjoy the good things.
