  1. When you live by BABIP, you also die by BABIP. It's certain that players that have the approach of an Ichiro or a Pierre lends itself to a higher BABIP. However, that style, or any style of play, does not protect them from the variation that's sure to occur with BABIP. When you are one dimensional in that aspect, when you can't take a walk(Ichiro) or hit for extra bases(Pierre) to still help when BABIP fluctuates, then you wind up with seasons that are as miserable, like Pierre's 2002 or 2005. Not making the World Series is not an indictment of a team that's built. The series' are too short, and too unpredictable for a result either way to be the responsibility of the GM. EDIT: You should also know from the book that Beane's aversion to base stealing in that particular season was largely a product of the team he built. He shut down the running game because with the team he had it would hurt more than it would help.
  2. Jones OPS by month: April: 1.074 May: .586 June: .714 July: .953 August: .586 September: .686 I don't think Hunter's injury was a particular turning point, it just coincided with the end of the second of Jones' two great months, and before the final 2 of his 4 abhorrent months.
  3. Offer them Rusch first. But yes, I'd give Ohman for Michaels.
  4. Yes, that's exactly what people are saying.
  5. They wouldn't take Westbrook for Kearns? I'd jump all over that considering he puts up solid numbers in the AL, under control for a while still, and has an extreme GB profile.
  6. Michaels' 3 year numbers against RHP are plenty good for a CF. Add in that he'll face some LHP in full time duty to raise those, and it's still a perfectly fine argument.
  7. As who promised? Some NSBB folks? Rhodes is a respectable arm that Philly needs. Michaels is a spare bench player. Rhodes, like all relievers, is inconsistant. Michaels is a spare bench player with a .380 career OBP. If the Cubs had a lineup full of "spare bench players," they'd have one of the better offenses in the league. The fact that the Phillies are settling on Arthor Rhodes for Michaels, tells you the value Jason Michaels has around baseball. He couldn't beat out the likes of Glanville, Ledee, and Bryd, for goodness sakes. And that decision making got the Phillies what? the second best offense in the NL in 2005, the third best offense in the NL in 2004, and the fifth best offense in the NL in 2003. Yes, Abreu, Thome, and Burrell are good hitters. That's not the point. Your logic to devalue a player is based on accepting the decision making of an organization that hasn't been very successful, and just fired said decision maker.
  8. I remember reading somewhere that Rose is letting his brother handle his recruitment, instead of his AAU and HS coaches. His brother has ties to Louisville and another school(Memphis?), which seemed to imply he may be headed there instead of staying in state, which might have happened if his coaches were still in the picture. IIRC, this info was from an Illinois fan at a MSU board.
  9. You'd be much better off just taking the arguments as they are without trying to label people into preconceived stereotypes.
  10. Seriously, stop trying to fit some group of posters with some preconceived notion you have. No one is running away with one metric here. You're crying out for balance when it is already there.

  12. ALAN SCHWARZ: One thing that Eddie and Gary, you might not be aware of, is that a few years ago Voros came up with something called Defense Independent Pitching Stats, which . . . EDDIE BANE: Alan, you said, "You guys may not be aware." That's one of the things we're battling. We are aware. I read these guys' stuff all the time. ALAN SCHWARZ: I said, "May not be aware." Gary, have you ever heard of DIPS? GARY HUGHES: No. ALAN SCHWARZ: OK then! (Laughter) EDDIE BANE: But I'm going to read everything I can, and on top of that have Gary Hughes in the ballpark to see what the guy does. We're trying to dispel these things. It's not like when we're drafting we spit tobacco at the board, and whatever name we hit is the guy we take. I've read this stuff. GARY HUGHES: Is that what DIPS is? Tobacco? (Laughter) Link
  13. Mizzou is from the original Big 8, and it has rivalry ties with kU, KSU, and Nebraska. I can't see them leaving that for a conference where they only have a real history with one school.
  14. It would be easiest for divisions to add a western team, but I don't see a feasible opportunity there, since the possibilities(ISU, Mizzou) are entrenched in the Big 12.
  15. First year in a very competitive conference for DePaul. I think it'll only help in the long run. Yep...no Purdues or Penn States to beat up on in this league. For every Purdue, PSU, or Northwestern, there's a Providence, South Florida, or Depaul.
  16. Can someone actually come up with a reason why Michaels would not continue his success in a full time role? Splits, quotes, anything? Most players who play part time have a reason for doing so besides 'they've never played full time'. Michaels is a better defender(unless that will get worse with more playing time despite 2 full seasons of duty) than Pierre, and he consistently has been better than Pierre's best seasons, nevermind when Pierre has BABIP hiccups and doesn't hit .300 and is terrible offensively. The Pierre move wasn't decent at all. We overpaid for a marginal talent who is the very definition of one-dimensional, without any room for improvement upon previous success. Also, our offense was worse after we acquired Lofton and Ramirez. Mind-blowing pitching performance carried us to the playoffs. fatigue. Hey I'd be productive, if I had every other day off. ;) Okay, let's see how well Michaels performs with 0 v. 1+ days off. It's a worthy reason if there's something behind it.
  17. As a Cavaliers fan, I find this choice remarkably easy.
  18. Williams is better than a bottom feeder. His performance puts him in the top 30 starters in the NL, which is equivalent to a 2 starter. Williams only made 17 starts for the cubs last year...he has to prove his stamina to be a top 30 NL starter in my book Welcome! Williams only made 17 starts, but it was because he didn't come til later in the season. He pitched himself into shape and was pitching his best by the end of the season.

  20. Williams is better than a bottom feeder. His performance puts him in the top 30 starters in the NL, which is equivalent to a 2 starter. OK, I admit it's unkind to call Williams a bottom feeder, but I doubt he was a top 30 guy unless you throw out his lousy games with the Giants. He does have a 3.92 career ERA, so he could be considered decent. Yes, I was considering only his time as a Cub.
  21. They have 3 losses, 2 on the road to top 10-15 teams, and the other on a neutral court to UConn. They're going to have to drop one before I'd think about dropping them.
