  1. Defense ruining Smyly's trade value here.
  2. It's Yan Gomes' world and we just live in it.
  3. I mean...a perfect game would work from Smyly.
  4. But this is a complete Phillies broadcast masquerading as a national broadcast.
  5. Kruk is one of them, I believe.
  6. This broadcast team suuucks
  7. Big day for the deadline. It would be very helpful for Smyly to destroy the Phillies.
  8. No clue on that one.
  9. same! Third. They are actually easy enough to exit out, but it totally messes up the "go to last read" functionality, and then I end up at the top of every page. That's the most annoying part for me. Yeah, it annoyed me, too! I figured out that if I just click the "board index" link first, the ad pops up at that point. Then I click my "Active Topics" link and proceed as normal and the popup doesn't reappear during that session.
  10. I think at a minimum you can use him(and a bit later, Alzolay) in a similar manner as they used Thompson prior to him joining the rotation. As you mention there won't be a shortage of innings to soak up. There may not be *that* many innings. If we can't trade Miley & Smyly prior to the deadline because of health, the rotation could get really crowded soon.
  11. For the deadline... Contreras + Ortega => Myers, Campusano, Wood + Susana (San Diego) Robertson => Gavin Williams Happ + Givens => Jason Dominguez Davis, Dominguez, Caissie, Wicks, Velazquez => Soto + Corbin --------------------------- Give the pitching infrastructure the rest of '22 to get Corbin down the right path. If he looks fixable, keep him. Otherwise, DFA him. Go into the offseason with: CF: Morel LF: Soto RF: Suzuki 1B: ??? SS: Hoerner DH: ??? C: Campusano 3B: Wisdom 2B: Madrigal SP1: ??? SP2: Stroman SP3: Steele SP4: Thompson SP5: Hendricks / Corbin That's not a bad start. There's also a lot of quality depth building up at AAA/AA. I think paying Soto + Corbin would take us out of the market for one of the big SS, but that's okay with me. I'd rather have Soto than any of them. There would be three big holes to fill - 1B, DH + SP1. That's a doable offseason. Get a couple of good bats (ideally at least one lefty) to stick at those two spots and that offense would have the potential to really rock. Add a good SP1 and that staff is fine as-is. Fix Corbin, whose velocity is higher now than when he was good, and now you have a really solid staff. Basically get Soto now and it really accelerates the arrival of "the next great Cubs team".
  12. Given the upcoming 40 man crunch, I'm not against including guys like Wood/Hassell that won't have to be rostered yet.
  13. I don't know...if we could sign Campusano to a 3/40 contract right now, I'd be awfully happy about that. Then if we could trade Contreras for Wood + Susana, I'd be happy with that, too.
  14. That's just the soccer fan in you.
  15. I'd rather go for one of the pitchers I mentioned above than Zavala. We have many higher upside OF's in the system. He's essentially similar to Pinango in my mind. But if that's the basic structure, I'd be thrilled.
  16. Willson + Ortega for Hosmer + Campusano + Robert Gasser We improve their team at two positions for this year, and they have control of a cheap Ortega as long as they want him. Most importantly, they get out from under Hosmer's contract. For us, our cost of taking on Hosmer's contract gets adjusted by its remaining AAV, which means our "cap" hit is much smaller than theirs (at least that's what I recall from the new CBA). We also get our catcher of the future and another left handed sp who is crushing it as an over-age player in high A this year. ----- eta Though I'd love to see if Jarlin Susana is available in the trade.
  17. Why would they want a 28 YO arb eligible 1B in any deal is what I’m wondering. Smith wouldn’t have much Value in a trade for prospects if they managed to turn him around. The Cubs would be stuck with an arb eligible albatross who is costing draft position and a shot at the #1 farm 1) I don't want any part of Dom Smith however, 2) your statement is pretty much what anyone would have said about Josh Bell a year ago.
  18. Has anyone heard about UDFA signings? I'd guess that anything over $125k will have to wait until the drafted players sign, but there's no reason to wait on those if they're signing at $125k or under.
  19. Fantastic - I thought he'd be one of the tougher signs of the day 3 guys based on his MLB Pipeline ranking.
  20. 1. Gotta be Nazier Mule, right? He probably doesn't spend too long doing the two-way thing, but it's exciting especially when he throws triple digits as a pitcher 2. Shane Marshall (14th round) probably? He's a catcher, threw a few innings in a blowout where his fastball metrics absolutely popped and the team took him as a pitcher. I think that's fun, and I believe it's similar circumstances to how the org ended up shifting Brandon Hughes to the mound 3. Keep in mind the Cubs have a pretty deep system, but I'd say Horton slots into the back of the top 10, Ferris around 15ish, while Mule, Birdsell, Paciolla, and maybe Frisch in the 20-30 range (or at least have a good argument to) 1. Definitely agree on Mule 2. Marshall is a great choice on this one, but I'm pretty excited about the potential for a lot of the 11-20 picks 3. I'd have Horton around the same place for now, but he's got a chance to rocket up the list if he shows in pro ball like he did during the CWS
  21. Also, this is always a great resource to have bookmarked: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/1/d/1R9hzhGo0Q_29g2bfa2yQwHYqNN799JzkCP7HyK-XCKY/htmlview#
  22. We're not trading for Castillo. He would make sense for us for next year. There is a real value there. But he's simply more valuable to teams in this year's race. They will be willing to pay for value this season and next. We would only pay for value next season. It would be fun, but to actually bid more than other teams would require paying more value than he'd be worth to us.
  23. If they sign 18-19 of these guys I'm going to be ecstatic
  24. From BN: Round 15 (443) – Haydn McGeary, C (Colorado Mesa): It’s not a pitcher! McGeary, 22, put up hilariously absurd and ridiculous numbers in D2, and in the Appalachian League this summer. His .481/.579/1.061 slash line – yes, that last one is his SLUGGING percentage – was the best in D2 this year.
