  1. I think LA would be the most logical team to take on those two guys at the same time. They'll have money to spend this offseason and they are not getting a whole lot of production from either position. They also have more prospects to trade than any other team except Anaheim. And I don't see Anaheim being players for those guys. I think they'll be more focused on OF or pitching.
  2. Interesting methodology they use. However, I'd be interested in how they account for ballpark configuration in their grids. It would seem that Damon, for example, could be at a huge disadvantage with the way that Fenway juts out to right center. Not that he has a strong arm at all, but it could be made to look worse if the oddities of Fenway aren't incorporated.
  3. I think he'd run pitchers into the ground if they were productive enough down in TB. Price held him back in Seattle, but he still managed to overwork pitchers like Garcia. I forgot about Garcia. He seems to have a better handle on whom to use in the pen at any given time than Dusty, but that doesn't seem hard.
  4. He's a better handler of pitchers than Dusty, but his philosphies of how to run a team and game strategy are still 180 degrees from my own. That's why I don't like him.
  5. Murton, Lofton or Pierre, Wilkerson would look pretty nice, too. And a lot cheaper, leaving tons of $$ for the likes of Furcal, Ryan and Burnett. No OF with Pierre in it is going to look good to me.

    it's on!

And...gamecenter is not showing Turnbow with a blown save. Curious. Your Texas boys are tearing it up tonight, though.

That had to be the harshest blown save I've ever seen.

I guess I will be putting Cain back into the rotation:

Yeah, but I'm just glad he is on my team. And what is up with my near total lack of ability to get a quality start the past two weeks? It is really starting to piss me off. I should have just gone with Cain.

    Chris Shelton is killing me.
  11. Diffusion, Thanks for doing all that research and sharing it with us. I thought it was a very entertaining read. I'd like to point out, though, that not all productive rookies come from BA's top 100 list. Look at the Cards the last few years when they've had problems at the major league level. For a good portion of this year, they were without both of the starting corner OF's. They tried Mabry to fill a gap at first, but the secret mojo potion of last year that got him to perform well above his career averages ran out and he was back to his normal, under-productive self. So what do they do? They turn to minor-leager John Rodriguez and stick him out there to sink or swim. Fortunately for the Cards, he swam. If he had not, I imagine they would have simply shuffled the deck chairs and tried someone else. This is what teams do when they are willing to give minor league players a chance to succeed. The case of Franceur in Atlanta is very well documented, but I love to see what Cox did with Kelly Johnson. He was called up and stuck out there and given the full backing of Bobby. When he was 1-32 to start his career, Bobby still stood by him and lauded him with praise when it would have been easy to sit him down and say that, "his throws aren't quite straight."
  12. But the other teams have a book on the veterans. I say that playing the kids who have no books on them gives us the best shot! Can we at least get a little consistency in the palaber?
  13. When I was a kid, I wondered much more about why I had to pledge allegiance to a flag than I ever worried about the God part. My country, parents, state, school, whatever. But a flag? What has it done to earn my allegiance?
  14. No response to the boston / ny question? I'm disappointed.
  15. So now you are agreeing with my original statement that Def Eff is an irrelevant statistic?? or do you still think it's a good indicator of overall defense? Defensive Efficiency was brought up so i am just pointing out that the majority of good teams have better defensive efficiency's than the cubs Im not sure where i implied what you said in your post. As you say, obviously there is a correlation. This would lead me to believe, that we should work to improve the defense, not actively and obviously make it worse by going with a middle infield of Nomar and Walker. Because winning and defense are correlated does not mean that you will necessarily win more if you improve the defense. That is the difference between correlation and causation. Def. efficiency is a relevant stat. So is runs scored. So are ERA, dERA and many other metrics. It is the context and the interactions that have to be understood when trying to say that an improvement in this one stat will help something else. Improving the defense is a noble goal. So is improving the offense. So is improving the pitching. If all three get better, I'd guarantee the overall team improves. However, if you start sacrificing offense to improve the defense, you may not improve the team.
  16. thx. How could I forget Grace & Clark going at it in the '89 playoffs?
  17. I'm confused. Are NYY and Boston not good teams? Or do they not count for some reason? It seems to me that they've made a conscious decision to trade defense for offense and it has been a winning formula for them. So why aren't those two teams relevant to this discussion since they've done exactly what people are proposing the Cubs should do?
  18. I believe a couple of the catchers had what would be termed "full time" duty. Also, Grace broke in after '89, didn't he? I wouldn't say that Murton doesn't have a chance to be as good as Giles, but you have to realize just how good Giles has been and how few players reach that peak value to see how unlikely it is for any prospect to reach that level.
  19. So your conclusion is that good teams have good defense and bad teams have bad defense, with a few exceptions? And if we looked at offense, might we find the same thing? If we look at pitching, might we find the same thing? There's a fundamental rule when looking at stats that often gets ignored: don't confuse correlation with causation.
  20. Defensive efficiency is a pretty good measure for the overall defense. It is simply the rate at which balls in play are converted to outs. Apparently the Cubs are the 4th best team in the NL at doing so.
  21. I think we should edit out that whole, "endowed by their Creator" part of the Declaration.

How on the @#$@#$@ earth can anyone not know at this point that you DO NOT start off Alou with a first ball fastball as a strike?!?

On a different note... Cain looks damn good, too.
