  1. I think the Cubs would have to offer much more than just Jerome Williams. If the Cubs are going to trade Todd Walker (I'm opposed to that, but it looks like that's what they want to do), why don't they send him to Arizona in a Quentin trade? I think Williams' trade value has gone up quite a bit since mid-year. But I think there are other pieces the Cubs could add that AZ would be interested in. As you say, Walker could be included, Patterson could be moved, etc.
  2. Mens tennis is an easier sport to dominate. Look at when Sampras was at his peak, he was as dominant as Federer. Same with others. For a tennis tournament to begin and be able to say, "this guy is going to win" is not unusual at all. The only male golfer in the last 50 years who is close to as dominant as Tiger is Jack. The feeling he had at his peak of, "Tiger is a lock" was nearly unique in golf history.
  3. Johjima. ;)
  4. Yeah, off Livan.
  5. Because Bobby Cox always picks one pitcher that will work with the backup catcher to get the regular guy rest. Maddux didn't need any assistance calling a game, didn't have pitches that were particularly hard to catch and prevented runs to the extent that the offense could take a hit and still leave the team with a good chance to win. That and he needed a catcher who could throw better than Javy & Barrett.
  6. Thanks for posting that, Diffusion. It is certainly something to keep in mind when looking at the numbers. I think Quentin is a guy with the whole package. He's got the production record. He's got the tools. He also (reportedly) has all the intangibles you could ask for. He was known as a real leader at Stanford. He's a very smart ballplayer. I really think he'd be a great fit for the Cubs. I'd approach AZ and start with an offer of Williams. It would make a lot of sense for both teams.
  7. Because Carlos Quentin is going to be a stud. He's an OBP machine with good power who plays a great OF and is also a very smart player. A 23 year old pitcher with Williams skills is tough to give up. If he could recover his lost velocity when (if) he gets into shape, he'd be an incredible asset. But I really like Quentin and think he'd be a major piece to build around. For more details, there's a thread in transactions to discuss this possible trade. We should probably contain this thread to talk about Williams. Since I'm the one who derailed it, I apologize! :D
  8. Do you really think that Hendry would sell high on this one? Williams for Carlos Quentin, baby! Very interesting....Who do you slide into Williams slot? Burnett. I'd pay the 4/40 to get him. If it turns out to be impractical to outbid the Yanks for his services, I'd go with an open competition between Hill, Guzman, Pinto, Nolasco, etc.

  10. He's turning himself into very attractive trade bait this winter, isn't he?
  11. Fuld over Pie in CF? Based on 2005 stats alone. Pie didn't play enough to earn the nod.
  12. Hey now! :) I can't figure out if you didn't like the cuss word, or that I'm rooting for Adam when he beats me. didn't even notice the cuss word. ;)
  13. Hey now!
  14. What kind of haul could Barrett bring in? Also, since Johjima doesn't know the league, how confident would the Cub pitchers be with him calling the pitches? I'm not sure what Barrett could bring in return. Maybe Quentin? AZ's young catching duo certainly didn't perform as they had hoped. As for pitch calling and knowing the league...that is why there are pitching coaches and pre-game preparation sessions.
  15. 1908 and I were talking about this at the game on Monday. Our conclusion: Trade Barrett, sign Johjima. :D
  16. That's harder information to come by and probably won't be finalized until it is about ready to start.
  17. Are you referring to the Fall League where the top prospects in MLB play one another? Or are you actually referring to the instructional league where the Cubs will bring a bunch of prospects who may be changing position, who were injured for a good part of the year, who need to work on something in particular, etc.?
  18. Len, Thanks for stopping by and chatting with our community. It is a lot of fun for us to be able to interact with someone from the team, so I hope you consider stopping by on a regular basis. For my question - Ever since Harry started in Chicago, the Cubs have turned the seventh inning stretch into a tradition. For the first year post-Harry, I loved the guest conductor idea because it seemed like a great way to honor Harry's legacy. At this point, though, the tradition seems to be getting tired and I'd really rather listen to you and Bob talk baseball in the bottom of the seventh -- usually an important part of the game. I was hoping to hear your thoughts on the the pros/cons of continuing the guest conductor tradition versus moving in a new direction. Thanks!
  19. - Williams + ??? for Quentin. - Sign Burnett for the rotation. - Sign Giles for the other OF position. - Let Quentin & Murton fight it out for PT in the OF. - Resign Nomar & Walker for the IF. - Let Neifi go and use Cedeno as backup IF. - Let Corey & Hairston fight it out for PT in CF while Pie gets some AB's in AAA. Enjoy seeing an offense that can get on base and hit for some power.

Hey, they've gotta put someone out there to catch the 11 ceremonial first pitches before every game.
  21. If your only definition of success is winning the WS, I think you're too harsh. I'll be happy if I see continuous progress as an organization. I'm as disappointed with the regression in minor league talent for the team in 2005 as I am with the record of the major league organization. I certainly want the Cubs to win the WS, but it is not the only goal with which I'll be satisfied in a given year.
  22. The problem isn't "kids" pitching in the ninth. The problem is the overall usage of the pen. Take a look at the two relievers in the ninth. Mitre is a sinkerball pitcher who needs regular work to be sharp or the sinker just doesn't sink. He's pitched 1/3 of an inning this entire month. Ohman, on the other hand, has pitched in 61 games this year. Not an overwhelming number, but that is a bit misleading as he didn't even start the year on the team. He was also behind Remmy on the "LOOGY" list in the first half. He's pitched in more than half the games in the second half and pitched in 6 of 7 from Aug 30th - Sept 6th. Dusty has always been a manager that rode the top guys in his pen into the ground while letting the back of the pen accumulate too much rust between outings. And it's the wrong guys! Mitre would probably be a whole lot more effective if he were used that often. I can't really say that Ohman's worn down (IMO, he just lost his release point for a couple guys). But I find it odd for a manager who preaches that all the position players on the bench need to get regular PT to be sharp that he'll let the back end of the pen go two weeks between starts on a regular basis.
  23. N/M Roadkill is just slow. Bonds gives me an additinoal 2.75 points with a double and run scored.
  24. Pujols and Bonds combine for 1 AB today?!? WTF is up with that?
  25. I'm actually down to six starts, as Patterson is questionable for Tuesday after losing significant weight with a bad bout of flu/sinus infection. With Bonderman out rather indefinitely with a bum wing, that puts my pitching in a rather precarious position for the playoffs. I may end up hoping that St Louis or Minny gives Reyes/Liriano a chance in the rotation down the stretch. Damon is battling injuries and Guillen's power has been sapped since he hurt his shoulder. Hopefully, the presence of Bonds in the lineup will give everyone a lift!
