  1. Damn. Now the Cubs themselves are trolling me. http://m.cubs.mlb.com/news/article/214190644/moises-alou-tops-cubs-free-agent-signing-list/
  2. Hello, everybody! It's that fund raising time of year again - If you are willing to donate to the site, please think about doing so now. No donation is too small, but none is too large, either! I'm going to try to keep these drives to once a year at the beginning so as to annoy people as little as possible, but please help a brother out if you can. Thanks!
  3. No. You entirely missed the point. Each position on the field might have different value in during a game, but HOF consideration is for the position that the player played vs. other in the same position in his era and of all time. No one is going to compare Ozzy Smith vs. Mike Schmidt vs. Steve Carleton and say one should be in the HOF and the others shouldn't. So would you have 11 separate ballots (c, 1b, 2b, 3b, ss, lf, cf, rf, dh, sp, rp)? Otherwise you are having the players from different positions competing for the same votes.
  4. Warren was really the 6th starter out of camp, right?
  5. I know if I were trying to rebuild my value I'd want to play in Dallas in the summertime. yep.
  6. I think you've mentioned that once or twice.
  7. I can't help but think of Bryce Harper joining this team in a couple years now.
  8. Valentine's Day.
  9. So, the assumption is that getting a new qb is just going to fix everything that was wrong with the dreadful offense?
  10. I would answer HIMYM, but I gave up after season 8. I'll go with Heroes. Season 1 was amazing and original, but man did it get bad. However, I enjoyed season 1 so much I even subjected myself to the half season they aired in 2016.
  11. I wonder how low his price would have to go before the Cubs would think about bringing him back. I really wouldn't mind having him and Monty form some sort of a hybrid starter approach through at least the first half to keep the innings down for both of them. Assuming Hammel is his normal first half self, we could then profit by trading him off at the deadline and moving to a more traditional rotation for the second half. I'm certain it won't happen, but I wouldn't terribly mind seeing it happen, either.
  12. Fascinating article from Fangraphs on a little known California law that could totally disrupt MLB contracts.
  13. That's just describing every fan base out there. True, but Cards fans (in general) are just far more sanctimonious about it.
  14. Columbus, I think. Or Erie. One of the two.
  15. Well, Jay was signed for depth. On days when the "regulars" play, there is one position available for Jay/Almora/Baez. I don't think they are confident of Almora or Baez taking the big step forward, so they signed Jay to guarantee at least okay production for that spot. Then there are rest days. And injuries. I think the team really hopes that Jay is a bench player because everyone is healthy and either Almora or Baez are making a solid claim to a position. However, let's face it - our manager will make out all kinds of lineups with this team. I'm certain we'll see the "All World Defense" more than a few times with Jay - Almora - Heyward in the OF and Bryant - Russell - Baez - Rizzo on the IF.
  16. Seeing those names makes me feel a lot of things, feeling good about 1 or a combination of those names filling the rotation for more than 1 year is not one of them. I'd feel pretty good with any of Darvish, Tanaka or Arrieta in Arrieta's role. I'd feel pretty good about a number of those starters taking Lackey's role.
  17. Easy to justify with a Coors penalty, even if inaccurate.
  18. Who voted for bonds but not Clemens? I'd love to get an explanation there.
  19. Bags Bonds Clemens Edgar Moose Raines Manny Pudge Sheffield Sosa Bonds was so good that he basically had the career of the next two best hitters on the list. He's second all time in fWAR to Ruth. Clemens is the all time leader in fWAR amongst pitchers. Don't care if they did steroids. Any ballot without them is ridiculous. I strongly suspect that if framing metrics were around for Rodriguez that his defensive reputation would have been much lower. But what he did as purely an offensive catcher is huge. Sheff and Sosa are iffy candidates. Both were flawed in different ways, but I loved watching both of them play. For the same reason, Vlad would have been next on my list. BTW - I think Schilling is deserving, but I couldn't get myself to list that dickbag. ------- Also - Everyone on that list from Edgar through Sosa is between 60 & 70 fWAR (iirc). Trout is already up to 47.7. Crazy good.
  20. You can change your picks now.
  21. Or by fWAR, he had a nine year stretch from 95-03 where he put up over 50 fWAR. Remarkably good, durable and consistent.
  22. It's not that bad if you're willing to take anyone connected with steroids off the list. I'm not, though. So I consider his ballot to be horrendous. Any submission that doesn't include Bonds should be thrown out.
  23. For those that want to feel a little better about filling the rotation after this season: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-strong-free-agent-pitching-class-of-2017-18/ Here are the guys slated to be free agents after the 2017 season: SP with opt outs: Johnny Cueto Masahiro Tanaka Wei-Yin Chen Ian Kennedy SP slated to be FA: Name 2016 WAR 2017 Projections 2017 AGE Yu Darvish 2.7 4.5 30 Jake Arrieta 3.8 4.1 31 Michael Pineda 3.2 3.5 28 Danny Duffy 2.8 3.1 28 John Lackey 3.1 2.8 38 Tyler Chatwood 2.1 2.3 27 Jaime Garcia 1.2 2.3 30 Jeremy Hellickson 3.2 2.2 30 Bartolo Colon 2.9 2.2 44 Francisco Liriano 0.4 2.0 33 CC Sabathia 2.6 1.9 36 Jhoulys Chacin 1.6 1.9 29 Lance Lynn 0.0 1.9 30 Alex Cobb -0.1 1.6 29 Marco Estrada 3.0 1.5 33 Chris Tillman 2.4 1.4 29 Jason Vargas 0.3 1.4 34 This list doesn’t even include Tyson Ross, who might increase his value considerably. There’s also another list of guys who could pitch their way to relevancy, including Clay Buchholz, Andrew Cashner, Nathan Eovaldi, Miguel Gonzalez, Derek Holland, and Hector Santiago.
  24. A 2013-2015 version of Ross on the Cubs would make a big difference. However, 1) It's not a sure thing that he'll even ever pitch at the major league level again 2) It is very uncertain how good he'll be if/when he makes it back 3) Things are still just at the rumor stage All that said...that would make for one hell of a rotation if he came back at full strength.
