  1. Considering Drew just backed out of 11M a year, I have a feeling he's looking for something along the lines of 13M a year. In that case, he and Nomar will cost more than the Cubs were willing to pay Aramis, which was a piddly 14.6M a year, from what the Trib is reporting.
  2. Just think...right now we could be heading into an off season with both Beltran and Ramirez, only worrying about 2B or SS and the rotation. Instead, we have to plug ALL those holes. It sucks to be a Cubs fan right now...
  3. I hate the Cubs. I've been drinking, so I'm not sure, but am I reading that right? 73M for 5 years? That comes out to 14.6M a year. 14M should have been where they started when he opted out of the contract, not just south of where they ended!
  4. I have a hard time believing Prior has ANY trade value right now. Everyone in baseball is wondering if he'll ever be completely healthy again. Besides, all the bad Chicago press he's recieved for lacking toughness doesn't help his value one bit.
  5. I doubt the Yankees want Shef to stay in the same league, much less the same division...
  6. This is just silly...Wood can't start, and his shoulder isn't strong enough to close? What exactly is he going to do? Stain-stick the other guy's jerseys? If this is true, there is absolutely no reason to waste a roster spot and cash on him. And I say this even though Kerry Wood is my favorite player sine Ryno.
  7. I'd guess he's going to get at least 50M. Let's face it...a team isn't going to pony up 25M-30M just for the rights to negotiate, and then lose him by playing hardball with the contract details. I think as a dominating 26 year old in this free agent market, he's going to get a great contract.
  8. Ding ding ding! We have a winner. Whatever a good team does is called Team Baseball. In my mind, Team Baseball means having a bunch of god players on the roster...but what do I know?
  9. That's what I would think. However, this guy implied that no one in the organization seemed to feel that way. From what he said, it sounded like the Cubs see it as a choice between ARod and Aramis. Of course, I have no idea how connected he really is, vs. how much of the conversation was just opinion presented as fact.
  10. If the Cubs trade for ARod, I have a feeling it will be to replace Ramirez at 3B. I understand that changes the argument, but ff that's the case does he still fit the bill? I'd say no.
  11. Okay folks...take this with a huge bag of salt... On Friday was on the phone with a customer who works in the Cubs organization. After we finished talking business, I asked him about the Ramirez situation. He has nothing to do with the baseball part of the business, and I have no idea how much he knows, but he sounded confident. So, with that glaring disclaimer in place, here's what he had to say... After Lou was signed, the rumors about ARod started flying. The Cubs did their best to squash those rumors as quickly as possible. However, in the meantime, some damage was done to Ramirez's relationship with the Cubs. Most people now think of ARod as a 3B, not an SS, Aramis took this to mean the organization was moving on to a new shiny target before even giving him a shot to renegotiate. Additionally, according to this guy, Lou has made it very clear that he wants ARod, even if the Cubs aren't shooting for him, and Aramis doesn't want to be the consolation prize. Even if this guy is correct in all of this, I feel it all comes down to dollars. If Hendry offers Ramirez the contract he wants, he'd be stupid to turn it down out of spite and hurt feelings. If he starts pouting, I'm sure his agent will do his best to remind him how important security and a guaranteed contract really are.
  12. Tim, I have a great amount of respect for you analysis of the game, and I almost never disagree with you. That said, it frustrates me when you make a proclamation like this, yet don't bother to post any supporting evidence. It's not that I don't believe you, but it's obvious a number of people here feel otherwise. So let me ask you this: why is it that you feel ARod is significantly better than Zambrano, Ramirez or Lee? More importantly, do you think he'll remain significantly better over the course of 3 years, assuming the Cubs are able to hold on to all three of them for three years?
  13. I never said otherwise. I'd have to guess currently the Cubs have a negligable market share in Japan.
  14. I'm hopeful that the Cubs will enter the bidding. My hope is that McDonough's background in marketing leads to him opening up the coffers and directing Hendry to get involved. Signing Matsuzaka for 25M-30M (posting rights) plus 60M (contract) can probably be recouped by the asdditional boost the Cubs will get in Japan due to the signing. This is especially tue if they amortize the posting fee over the life of the contract.
  15. He appears to be very old school and sold to the conventional ways of thinking. He gives away too many outs. Bah...That's disappointing.
  16. Where does Joe Girardi fall in the Sabr hierarchy?
  17. It sure would have been nice to have Patterson's .284/.325/.436 in center over Pierre. He's outhitting Pierre in every single category.
  18. For what Pujols brings to the table, 7/100 is a bargin. I'd break the bank on Pujols, and try to fill the rest of the roster with high potential high risk guys. When it's all said an done, I have a feeling Pujols will be the best hitter of this generation (and I'm including ARod in this generation). The nice things about guys like Miggy and Write is that they allow you the financial flexibilty to go after Pujols. I would do everything in my power to put together a roster that allowed for Pujols.
  19. I think his point was simply that you can't blame them for trying. When negotiating, you always start high and work your way down.
  20. That kind of stuff can mess with a manager too...at least a certain manager...
  21. ...I really thought we had a good chance at Bradley. Weh ave nothing like Zito to send their way. Out of curiosity, how much money does LA have to play with? Isn't Zito going to make more than 6M this season? Furcal is going to make 13M. So basically they are adding 19M and subtracting 3M? Are my numbers way off?
  22. The difference is that Baltimore has shown no signs of going into full blown rebuilding mode.
  23. Oh I'd do it for Pujols...and pick up most of his contract to boot...
