  1. 87 degrees with a 12-15 MPH wind out tomorrow. Cubs go up early, but the Reds will rally and score 3 unanswered TDs as the Kid, Kearns, and Dunn all go deep 3 times each. Predicted Final- Reds 28 Cubs 6.
  2. I would have to say that Glavine will get there, especially since he reworked his deal so that he can head to the ATL next year. I would also say Moose will get there too, IF he stays with the Yanks (he is a potential FA at seasons end). He is going to need some major run support to help him pick up 68 more wins over the last 5 years of his career. But 13 wins a year should be doable. Johnson is a ? mark, but should make it to the HoF because of the marks he has set while being left-handed.
  3. Lets see: Womack + the Neifury = 6 for 11, 2 runs, and 5 RBIs thru 9. I dont mind that so much.
  4. With Jeter becoming only the 240th person ever to whack 2000 hits, it got me thinking about a lot of things. I first looked at those about to make it this season. The list of players are GAnderson 1972, Manny Ramirez 1972, Mike Piazza 1962, ARod 1951, Mr. Pee/Capt. Bad Attitude 1932, Johnny Damon 1854, Vinny Castilla 1853, and Chipper Jones 1852. While it is a long shot, i wonder if any team has ever had 3 players cross 2k in hits in the same season? Johnny Damon would need 211 hits this season, which he has only done once in his career. After seeing the list of Yankee All Time hits leaders, I wanted to see the Cubs list. Only 8 Cubs have 2000 hits as Cubs- Anson, Banks, Williams, Sandberg, Grace, Hack, Santo, and Jimmy Ryan. Anson and Ryan were both outside the considered modern era- so most of us have been fortunate enough to see at least 3 of these guys play. Only Hack would be considered an old Timer in this sense. I would have to say the only Cub that I think could make the 2k Cub hits right now would be Ronny Cedeno. Sure i know it is way early in his career, but 71 hits so far and only 23. If he could continue and stick with us over the coming years, he might have a shot.
  5. Because he is a great manager. I am for one am looking forward to 3 more years. Also he is just one of 4 managers to ever be +.500 8 years in a row in theentire modern history of the National League. Not an easy feat. Just wish we had a GM to get him some players. Edit: Bobby Cox, Fred Clarke, and Walt Alston are the others.
  6. The thing is though that Sheff has never hit more than 43 in a year. Its not like a Sammy, McGwire, Bonds thing where they suddenly shot up (sorry, bad pun) in the number of HRs they hit. Sheff's career has more mirrored Aarons in the overall consistency of hitting HRs rather than a few great seasons. I dont get where anyone could possibly think that about him. The only knock i have seen on Sheff is that he can be difficult to deal with on a personal level. But i think a lot of that has to do with the atmosphere he was raised in and a lot of people do not understand or can comprehend that problem.
  7. Jeter got his hit in the 4th tonight, on an infield donk. I wonder if they got the ball out of the stands on the errant throw. Really surprised at a couple of you on Sheff. 8 time All Star, MVP, lifetime .300/.400, and just 47 HRs short of 500 with 1500+ RBIs (1494 right now). I think that would be no contest.
  8. Holy take everything Literally, (and 31-32+9 is 40-41, not 42  ). 2005- 202 2004- 188 2003- 156 (hurt) 2002- 191 2001- 191 2000- 201 1999- 219 1998- 203 1997- 190 1996- 183
  9. Was totally shocked when BT said to look out for DJ on Friday. Needs one hit for 2000. He is only 31 and can coast home to the HoF. That is crazy. Well done. Wonder if he can pass Aaron for 3rd at 3771. Figure 9 more full years at 200 hits would give him near that. I was looking at the Yanks and they have 8 guys who could make the HoF- that is 1/3rd of their team. ARod, Jeter, Randy Johnson, Gary Sheffield, and Mariano Rivera will all probably make it on the 1st ballot. Mussina (230 wins at 37), Matsui, and Williams (2255 hits at 37) all have work to do. Wish we could afford a $200+ million payroll.
  10. Cinn Enquirer Article Adam Dunn, another favorite sports-talk whipping boy, said he's surprised Griffey let the critics bother him. "Why does he care?" Dunn said. "I haven't listened one time."
  11. Griffey You make $9 Million per year. You asked for the attention in playing ball. You know more than just about anyone else what living like this is like because of your father. I have no sympathy for you. Just shut up, and stop trying to make BB look good. Are you really trying to get run from your adopted hometown? Keep talking like this, and your father may not even be able to save you.
  12. 4 Cuban threads already and you have to start a new one? hmm.
  13. Hendry made 2 big blunders in the offseason. #1- He made Rothschild comeback. Dusty never wanted him. Jim made him take him. Then when Larry was ready to head off to Detroit, Jim greatly increased his salary to comeback. Rothschild has been horrible and has helped to hurt half of our pitching staff. Just listening to comments that Cooper has made in the past about him makes me cringe. If you see something wrong with someone's delivery, you should always fix it and never put the health of the pitcher up against the effectiveness at which they are throwing. Everyone blames Dusty for the poor coaching, but Hendry is the one who picked most of the coaches on the staff- Pole, Clines, and Rothschild. #2- No corner OF power and a lack of OBP in the OF. Cant go into a season with 2 guys that are only going to hit you 20-25 HRs in the power spots in LF. Murton is a ? as to whether he can hit that many. One of those guys has to be able to ding 30-35, and Hendry didnt provide that. I dont blame Hendry for the Pierre thing. That was just bad damn luck, and there is still a chance Juan will pull out of it. That is hindsight talking for most of you guys. I also dont blame him for not signing Nomar. Look at this board last year or when we signed Miller. Everyone was freaking out because we were signing injured players. Hendry probably didnt feel that Nomar would ever get back to the level at which a large contract could be repaid. Again bad damn luck. I do blame Hendry for not going out and getting help for Lee. Sure we would have overpaid and Hendry clearly didnt want to do that. But because of it, this whole season is now a waste. He should be fired just for that reason if not any other.
  14. no and they wont. they have stated many times....Sept. 1 because of the disaster known as CPatt
  15. 5 now. And when Jim decided to actually get somebody down there that could stop someone.
  16. you missed a comma after the OBP, but everything else looked good. Extra bonus and style points for using a colon, semi-colon, multiple apostrophes, and multiple commas. You were a hyphen short of the cycle.
  17. Badger is my new buddy. He is just cracking wise on me because of a game day thread the other nite. I assailed ARam (pre-streak), which upset the sensibilities of those present because we all must follow blindly the opinions of the group and not have ideas of our own.
  18. Guzman and Hill are the only other 2 that have started in May. They are both in AAA, so what is the point of putting their horrific #s up there? Not attacking Kerry, just posting the ERA totals.
  19. Much has been made about our struggles at the plate this season. However, a great deal of the problem is also located in our starting staff. If Wood is ineffective and Prior doesnt return soon, no way we get this thing turned around. To wit: Cub Starters are 12-20 with a 5.40 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP. The ERA is 27th in the Majors only slightly ahead of Baltimore, KC, and Minny. The WHIP is 24th ahead of Ariz, Minny, Fla, KC, Balt, and Pitt (1.66???). Innings pitched by our starters is 28th in the league. Only Florida and KC starters have pitched fewer innings this season. Our guys are averaging 5 and 1/3rd innings. We keep that up much longer and our bullpen will die. Our pen has been stellar, especially in May. 6-6-8 w/ 10 and a 3.83 ERA for the season. For May: Eyre 1.04 Ohman 1.86 Williamson 2.25 Howry 2.89 Novoa 3.38 Dempster 4.50 Z 1.50 Marshall 6.15 Wood 7.20 Maddux 7.48
  20. $25.68 million per for the next 5 years? no way. no way that happens.
  21. what? Z? Eyre? Dempster? Howry? what have they done to deserve you ignominy?
  22. apparently, pierre & jones can be beaten like a deadhorse, but bringing up the kids' failure means banning? interesting thought process. It's the 4000+ other posts in addition to the start of this thread. Apparently you are not one of the "cool" kids cubfaninCA. people get maimed and flamed for offering opinions on this board that are contrary to the public sentiment here. Just keep on, keeping on. Discussion and debate is the foundation of this country. I like reading the off the wall stuff cause it makes me think even harder. I am not pretentious enough to think i have all the answers...YET! hehehe' go Alex Sanchez, go!
