  1. thank you, may i have another?
  2. i love ARod. embrace the hate like Reggie did.
  3. If we do a good job making it airtight, we'll know real quickly. You cant kill evil.
  4. ya, we just trade them for veterans that will flop on their face. Mitre, Nolasco, and Pinto for Pierre. 2 never will bes + Tavarez and Willis to the Fish for Alf and Clement. I say we stop trading with the Fish for a while. Have seen first hand this week why this is bad.
  5. When is Hawaiian shirt day?
  6. His .293 OBP this year would fit right in to their clubhouse.
  7. actually i think they are just trying to fix the transporter. looking at barretts offensive numbers this year, its obvious that we have the Bad Michael Barrett. Which begs the question if in fact there is a good one.
  8. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6867954 I hate the RedSux. But this is a good column and the links on the right in the Stats 101 give a pretty fair overview of most of the stats the Geeks (including myself) like to throw around on this board all the time. just thought someone might derive some benefit from it.
  9. trying to wrap my head around exactly why the Brewers had a business man special on getaway day today. The Braves have until Friday to drive 95 miles South to play the Cubs. The Brewers are at home tomorrow nite vs. the Fish. Doesnt make sense that they would throw their gate with a 1st place team. They should have rescheduled it.
  10. like i said, i appreciate aspects of both philosophys. While i understand the OPs approach used by moneyball enthusiasts in looking at talent, I dont think that everyone under 750 OPs should be sent to the minor leagues and that in certain positions (from the old school) defense is more important than offensive production. Moneyball people are just trying to avoid offensive outs, and i dont think they are necessarily concerned with defensive production. I think there is still something to be said for team defense but there really has been no substantial quantitative strides yet in the area. There are some stats like range factor and some others, but they appear to be flawed to some extent and based on perception in others. But it is an ongoing effort and i would imagine that someone will come up with a definitive tool that can be put in historical context soon enough.
  11. lol, thought you would appreciate that. like shooting fish in a barrell.
  12. Larussa has always put defense behind the plate over offense, as most rational people would. Steinbach in his day, was fair with the bat, but was counted on more to be solid behind the plate. I think this has just filtered down throughout the Cards organization. Molina will never be a good hitter. Anything he provides will just be an extra that wasnt counted on before. Old school baseball managers think the C, SS, 2b, and CF should be able to provide solid defense and range above all else. The New school from Moneyball thinks you should throw all that out the window and go for Ripken types at all positions, which is why Izturis catches so much flack around here. And then there are some of us who mix and match, playing both sides against the middle. Who is to say who is right and who is wrong? Larussa won a championship last but that doesnt necessarily make the moneyball arguement less valid. Two interesting philosophys both with their valid and invalid points, both struggling for overall acceptance. Makes for lively debate and good commentary.
  13. Ok let me try that again. A popular belief (Loogy) that has become associated with an institution (baseball) or occurence (situational pitching). Belief is defined as something accepted as true, especially a particular tenet or a body of tenets accepted by a group of persons. Here is another definition of myth as well- A fiction or half-truth, especially one that forms part of an ideology. Maybe you will like that one better.
  14. I have not seen that 1st study before and would have to look over it. I have seen the 2nd study before but that is not what we are discussing at the moment. The 2nd study is players around a super player, what we are discussing is a super player around players. Just b/c one may have an effect on another in 1 study, doesnt translate to the same on a 2nd study. But i will look at the 1st study. Always enjoy looking at people trying to quantify baseball ideas and the assumptions they make.
  15. Do you? A popular belief or story that has become associated with a person, institution, or occurrence, especially one considered to illustrate a cultural ideal.
  16. Loogys are a myth because: #1 cant be used on 11 man pitching staffs b/c lack of innings #2 cant be helpful in a bullpen b/c they dont throw a lot of innings and most important #3 managers can pitch hit for the left handed batter with a right hander leaving the decision to take the Loogy out after 1 pitch or let him face the righty. Either way, not a good scenario as Ohman has shown all year b/c they are totally ineffective against rightys usually. Now there will be those that scream and say that you should only face the guys you know that wont be pinch hit for- all that does is cut down their innings further. On most teams that would be only 1 guy and on several teams that would be no one at all. Therefore in summation after factoring pi to the 13th power, Loogy=myth.

  18. Speaking of speed, how about that Pierre fellow- 3 doubles and a triple tonight. Who knew he could do that in 1 game? Dodgers by a TD and FG.
  19. Lou's post game comment: Cubs manager Lou Piniella is optimistic that the Cubs can get back in the race. They're trailing the Milwaukee Brewers by five games, but to get back in it, Piniella said one of the improvements they need to make is baserunning. "We do some things that make you shake your head, running the bases at times that gets you out of innings," Piniella said. "We are five games out of first place, and I know it has been a struggle, but what we need do is to get on a little bit of a streak, get ourselves back up to the .500 level and go from there. Nobody has given up. We're still working. The players are trying like (heck) to get the job done, they want to get it done. There is a lot of baseball left to play, but at the same time one of the things that we've been missing -- we got to get better at."
  20. To the 2 people who selected the Cubs and Cardinals so far: Please seek Medical Attention immediately. Thank you, and have a nice day.
  21. If by offense you mean .244/.294 then you got it. Barrett is just awful. We need a real catcher. Someone who could stop a slider in the dirt, throw out anyone under the age of 75, or .... would be a good start. (I was going to say something else, but its not quantifiable which means it doesnt exist, sooo skip it). Any offensive abilities would be a plus.
  22. I will take the Astros. Right now they are an absolute mess. They have 2 starters that have no business being major leaguers. Jason Jennings is back to take over for one of them and may do well in that capacity. They still need to see if they can get 1 pitcher from somewhere else though. Their bullpen has been iffy, but better of late. The problem with it is long relief and a 2nd setup person. Ensberg and Everett have been nothing short of a disaster on the left side of the IF. Neither one could hit there way out of a paper sack atm. Their #3 OF spot has also been very weak with Lane and Scott not performing to expectations. So Garner is going to start Loretta at 1b more and put Berkman back in the OF. Their OBP has been awful this year as well as most of their other numbers. In that kind of ballpark, you figure they have to come out of it sometime soon, and they are only 6.5 gb through it all. Also a notorious post June 1st team.
  23. I really dont like talking about OPS b/c it is 2 stats wrapped into 1 and isnt very specific. Is it the OBP or the Slugging % that is down, and what are the numbers? It makes a big difference.
  24. Lol. One of the things i found funny over the weekend was one of the main reasons the government shut down the opposition television station was because the govt. wasnt getting its point out because the opposition tv station had better ratings. See kids, this is why Hollywood is bad. Its always about the ratings in TV and last week was sweeps week. Just wondering when Bush is going to shutdown all our TV stations and force us to watch Fox. I can kind of understand the frustration of the people in Venezuela in that perspective.
