  1. I feel like their success dates back to the early 2000's. If I remember right they were in the World Series in 2002 against the Angels? For the most part, they've only had a couple bad seasons since. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. Jim Hendry was a bad overall GM. He had a few good signings, a couple really good trades, but his overall grade as a GM is probably a C. Any GM with a Chicago budget can put together a short run of success, but it's something else if you can produce sustainable success - Cardinals, Giants, Red Sox, Yankees. 3. Ron Santo was a terrible insight-color guy, but he was just awesome to listen to. He gets a pass. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. There were some real idiots in the wrong roles in baseball back then.. I'm sure the same holds true today, but technology and elimination (for the most part) of PEDs has made it a much more scoutable sport. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1998-05-23/sports/9805230081_1_piazza-marlins-geoff-goetz Here's the Cubs almost get Piazza article. Almost mentions of Pat Cline.. The Cubs refused to give him up.. Haha Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. Remember when the Marlins added Piazza and traded their entire team to get him.. Bonilla, Charles Johnson, Gary Sheffield.. And then said "oh [expletive], he's expensive, let's trade him to the Mets for a bunch of young guys." If memory serves me, they got Preston Wilson among others. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  7. Who was Hendrys last draft pick? Brett Jackson? Between him, Veal and Brownlie - that's the reason why we had losing seasons these last 5 years. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  8. Tyler Houston was another cant miss guy. The Cubs were miserable at drafting for about 10-12 years.... BUT PEDs definitely made it a lot harder to be accurate. I don't think Mike Piazza being drafted as last round pick as a family favor by Lasorda would realistically happen today. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  9. Just be happy our GM isn't Amaro. He seems to be worse than Hendry but from the same tree. Overloaded bad contracts, solid few years and then hold onto them 1-2 years longer than he should have. He says he's waiting to get an offer he's blown away by for Hamels but even if he had the offer today, he'd hold out to the deadline to see what else is out there. I will bet the Phils trade Hamels this year but it'll be last minute. Papelbon on the other hand, they should just wait for the first no-brainer offer that pops up between now and July 31. 10. And Glen Allen Hill hit home runs onto other buildings in Chicago... Oh....syringes are so fun. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. Len Kasper is kind of a nerd, but he loves the Cubs and I love seeing/hearing that. JD tells it how it is and like Len said - if he doesn't know something, he'll say he doesn't know. I wish the Cubs radio network would make Coomer stick to the color guy. He is a HORRIBLE play-by-play guy. I'd rather listen to gamecast. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. Steve Stone was pointing out how bad the Cubs were playing down the stretch and Merker and a couple other players had their feelings hurt and complained. I like the setup now, but Stone is a good color guy - and the Cubs pissed that season down their leg. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  13. The Marlins have a very good young core talent. On the MLB roster alone - Gordon, Hechevarria, Bour, Yelich, Ozuna, Stanton, Ramos, Cosart, Capps, Alvarez, soon to be Fernandez.. I think they are worthy of considering. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. I feel as if evolvements over the last decade have ensured that Corey Pattersons don't happen nearly as often. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  15. Anyone selling tickets for mon-Thursday against Dodgers? I didn't think I was gonna be in town and sold mine a month ago. Looking for 2 tickets. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  16. This game is one of my favorites of all time. I remember watching and to this day, it can bring tears of excitement to my eyes. That was a season that should have had a completely different outcome. Fred McGriff came over from the Rays.. The Cubs had a really good roster...but seriously.. This video, Chip Carey being a jackass and calling Ricky out before the umpire signaled. I love the call though. I love hearing the radio broadcast too. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  17. When your 3,4,5 is Sosa, Grace and Oh Henry Rodriguez - great things happen. Cubs greats Sandy Martinez, Brant Brown and Scott Servais were great off the bench. I did love Glen Allen Hill and Gary Gaetti though. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  18. Just looked up becks 98 stats.. Pitched 80 innings as a closer.. 1.32 WHIP. Somehow finished 18th in mvp voting. If you ever get a chance, look at that Cubs roster in 1998. How they snuck into the playoffs is beyond me.. Must have been Jeff Blauser. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  19. Tom Gordon was good, just seemed like he got hurt every other week. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. Who else has been there since 98? Joe Blow, Gregg, Gordon, Remlinger for a bit, Marmol, was Fassero?, Hawkins Edit: Kerry wood Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  21. I remember Marmol being lights out as a setup man, but only decent at best as closer. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  22. Could be a huge game for Castro. Seems like could be a big confidence booster for him. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  23. Name the last Cubs closer who you felt was lights out getting the last 3 outs. I can't say I have the stats, but my last really fond memory of a closer would have been Rod Beck. I thought he was solid, but I was also like 9. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  24. Watching replay of Castros AB.. I love his approach there. I feel like so often he's trying to be a power hitter and pull off on the ball. He's so freakin good when he tries to go back up the middle or drive the ball the other way. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  25. I ultimately think the Cubs will see if Soriano can be effective and if he can't, they'll make a move for Papelbon. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
