All his eggs in one basket?
badger1679666666 replied to NoDak's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
How exactly do you know this? Is it that hard for you to accept that maybe, just maybe, Giles didn't want to play for Chicago? It's very hard for me to accept that Hendry apparantly didn't even try to talk him into the move, like other GMs have done with players who used to be against playing for that team. Like I asked before, How exactly do you know this? Well, we didn't get Giles, so that alone says he didn't do enough. But no, I don't know this as fact. None of this crap we talk about is known as fact. But any reasonable person who has read up on the situation would have to come to the conclusion that Hendry didn't really try hard to get Giles. If you disagree with that statement, or the statement that he did try really hard to get Furcal, than go right ahead and say it. But don't ask me to prove every statement, or else make sure you do that to every other poster who makes an educated assumption based on several reports by many baseball media outlets. I just don't think you know what you're talking about. That's all. You claimed Hendry didn't put enough eggs in Giles's basket. I was just wondering how you knew this. Nick, Goony doesn't know what he's talking about anymore than you know what you are talking about, and I don't have any facts to back up anything I'm talking about. No one here is Jim Hendry. Goony is free to make his own assumptions of whether Hendry tried aggressively to get Giles or not. He's not calling you out for believing that Hendry did everything in his power to get Giles. Therefore, there is no reason for you to call him out for believing that Hendry did not do all he could. Disagree or move on. If you prefer to trust that Hendry at least asked about Giles availability, good for you. Some of us don't buy into it, just like a lot of other people won't believe another Chicago Cub injury report. The only thing that will change my mind that Hendry did everything he could to get Giles, would be if he came out publicly and said he offered Giles a 3 year deal that was better than any other offer and Giles turned him down. Personally, I don't know why Hendry didn't offer Giles 3/45m to come to Chicago. No, I can't prove that he didn't make that offer. But, if he did, I'm sure someone would have heard about it. In fact, I'm not so sure Giles would be putting all his equipment back in the same locker he had last year if Hendry did make that offer. To me, and in my opinion only, Hendry wanted Furcal, not Giles. He placed more importance on a lead off hitter, rather than the most productive outfielder on the market. I sure hope someone flat out asks him why he didn't seem interested in Giles at convention this year. Maybe we will get some truth. 3/45 for a 34 year old giles is more insanity than 3/13 for Furcal, or 5/55 guaranteed for Burnett. Giles is NOT at all a 15/a year player. -

It's possible, but still not a good enough explanation for me. My personal view of the situation is that Hendry didn't prioritize Giles at all. He did not value Giles skillset or realize just how big a hole RF is right now. Hendry has a thing for guys like Encarnacion, Wilson, Jones and Burnitz, so he was more than happy to wait on RF, and pretty much ignored Giles and his .400+ OBP. Considering he was offering 5/50 and maybe more, for Furcal, 3/30 for Giles was more than fair to the Cubs, but I don't think he even tried to negotiate there. Fair enough, I would have liked Giles too. It just seems with the way things went on with Giles, that he really wanted to stay in SD. Now I want Lugo, Wilkerson, Huff, and/or Bradley. I think Hendry can still have a very effective off-season if he can't several of those. Lugo 2/3 of Huff/Bradley/Wilkerson. IF we can get those players you mentioned it would be a successful offseason. We'll see what Hendry can do but getting those players isn't cheap and will probably cost us our best prospects. Well Dusty ain't ever gonna play them, and Hendry isn't gonna fire him, so we might as well trade them for someone he will play right? @ this organization. I can't believe that we have to "dusty-proof" a lineup. How ridiculous is that? -
Did anyone hear Murph say that MacPhail (and he spelled it out) sucks for not telling Hendry to spend MORE THAN 13 million a year for Furcal? I almost spit out and choked on my soda. IS there anyone more stupid on air, than Murph? How the hell does he still work for the Score, and is the Score that [expletive] that they keep these hacks that know absolutely nothing about sports on air? The only guys I like are B and B - because they are smart and actually know things about sports. Christ, I remember reading in another thread that some of the afternoon guys on the weekend didn't even know about Wood's NTC. Man does the Score suck. [end rant]

Isn't it at all possible, even probable, that Hendry did look into Giles, but realized from what he was hearing that it looked like a lost cause/very difficult so rather than waste time with a player that was 95% staying in SD, he went after a player he thought he had a better chance of getting (Furcal)? Maybe he, the General Manager of the Chicago Cubs had more information than us, fans of the Chicago Cubs? -
Jose Macias: heard anything?
badger1679666666 replied to KatJ's topic in MLB Draft, International Signings, Amateur Baseball
There are two things that are never funny: cancer and Macias signing an extension. Dusty getting an extension would be less funny than either of those two, because if Macias rotted at the end of the bench I wouldn't care, but the fact that he's Dusty's boy off the bench 1st every time..... -
So then we COULD have Lugo SS (OBP/SPEED) Walker 2B (OBP/SOME POWER) Lee 1B (OBP/DECENT SPEED/POWER) Bradley CF (OBP/DECENT SPEED/SOME POWER) Ramirez 3B (OBP/SLUGGING) ???? RF Murton LF (OBP/SOME POWER) Barrett C (OBP/SOME POWER) Depending on who you get to fill SS/RF gaps it could be a very solid team.

[bHonestly, how do we know Hendry showed no interest in Giles? [/b]If this was reported, or Hendry commented I apologize, this is an honest question. Just because it was written about doesn't mean he wasn't interested. Hendry could have called Giles and Giles could have simply said, "Hey, I appreciate the offer but I'm not interested in moving to Chicago." Because we were watching carefully. If he had shown it, we would have seen it. I really don't think you know everything Hendry does, or hear everything Hendry heres, or are privy to all the knowledge of ongoings that Hendry is. Maybe you are poster with real connections, but otherwise you really don't know unless Hendry makes it obvious. "show" is 4 letters long. 1 syllable. It's one of the first few hundred words most english speakers learn. Why don't you understand it? I understand it, I just didn't read the first post Bruno had. No need to be an ass about it. And clearly if you read my post, you'd realize I don't know the english language very well.

Whatever. I guess you'll pay for CubfaninCA's month of premium too? I know I've read posts alluding to the fact that Hendry was a moron/idiot/stupid for not going after giles. IF you really want that bet, fine with me. I'll take a free month of premium. Even if those specific words weren't used, there were significant allusions to Hendry going after crappy mid-level medicore pen help instead of Giles and that being stupid(and even Furcal though this was much much much more rare). All I'm saying (if a regular non-premium, lower caste member of NSBB.com is allowed to) is that people that jumped all over Hendry might have acted too soon. It's entirely probable that he knew somehow, someway, that it would be more of a waste of time to try for a guy that was 95% set on staying SD than Furcal who had friends in Chicago and had some overtures with the Chicago ballclub indicating *some* interest. Further, it's probably that Hendry knows more than we do, and he isn't an idiot, moron, or stupid - though he might be unsucessful at times and make questionable movies.

Furcal loves Atlanta. Giles loves San Diego. Hendry has aggressively pursued Furcal. Hendry has not even remotely pursued Giles. What would have been the harm if Hendry aggresively pursued Giles? Was he afraid he might lure Giles away from San Diego? Oh, the horror. Or did he have some particular reason to not, at minimum, help drive up Giles price even more. The Giles offer from Toronto can't be used as an excuse in any way. It's another league, another country and a team that will probably never be much of a pennant threat as long as they share a division with the Yankees and Boston. I don't disrespect your opinion in anyway. But what I take offense to is "all that fussing and ripping for nothing" comment. It isn't needed. It isn't welcome. If Hendry out of the blue signed Giles to big money, I wouldn't be on here saying "I told you so" or "Giles fans can shut up now" or whatever the hidden agenda message he was attempting to relay. There are other message boards for that. If someone is tired of listening to me clamor for a Giles signing, ignore me. I've been waiting for a Cubs World Series for 42 years and I've seen a lot of bad baseball in that span. With 100m to spend on a team, I see no reason why they couldn't offer up 12-14m of that for the most obvious, glaring hole this team has had since Ron Santo left. I'm sorry if you don't agree that Brian Giles should have been the most sought after player this offseason. But save the "all that fussing and ripping for nothing" holier than thou crap. That's all I'm trying to say. I think the Cubs can still win without landing Giles. But, I think it becomes harder to do. I certainly won't be calling anyone out if we don't make the playoffs with Furcal, whereas we might have with Giles. I'll just be that much madder at Cubs management for not aggressively pursuing the players that could help this team win the most. Interestingly enough, we now have Dusty commenting that this team will not be able to win with two rookies in the line up. Huh. Murton is a given. Apparently, Neifi Perez will assume 2nd base when Walker gets traded. Pardon me, while I go finish losing my mind. Maybe he knew something the general managers at NSBB.com didn't know. The fact that he had a much better shot at Furcal than Giles, which appears to be the point. I'd rather him go gung ho for a guy we have a chance at, than waste time for a guy who we don't. I'm sure Hendry felt the same way.

Yeah, it better be Manny. After all JVB was about the 15th guy on the staff. Manny can't be a ptbnl. I'm pretty sure brfahey's post was dripping in sarcasm. -

Can all the "Hendry is so stupid" comments stop now? It was clear he wanted to stay in San Diego for less years and less money. I know it's an amazing stretch, but Hendry *might* be more in the know than NSBB.com posters. I for one am glad Hendry was looking working on other options. Hopefully we get Furcal and trade for a RF.

Call me crazy but after Benitez/Percival/Gagne/Urbina I really don't mind not spending 10 mil a year on a closer. I realize that those injuries have no predictive validity for the future of Ryan, but it's just not what I'd want to do. Even though everyone on NSBB has a sever mancrush for the guy. -
Ironic isn't it? Do you think if Nomar was more 'motivated' he could have avoided such an injury? And here we are two years after the trade, counting on Murton and watching backwards Ramon take 55 out of town. Nomar has one of the most intense workout regimens in baseball. I think SI did a story on a while back.

Can someone please tell me how Kerry is just supposed to "alter" his mechanics without any guidance from anyone? He should just tinker with his arm so it totally falls off? I for one don't want him changing his mechanics without someone who actually KNOWS something about it helping him. This mechanics crap is going too far IMO.,

"Almost" is the key word. Trading Juan Cruz for slugs like Pratt and Lewis was pretty dismal and qualifies for "fleeced" status in my books. Especially when you consider that the Braves were able to use Cruz as part of a package to land Tim Hudson. I think it's a fair distinction that when Hendry is trading "to get someone", he does a pretty good job(Nomar, Ramirez, Barrett, Lee). When he is trading "to get rid of someone", that's when he screws up(Cruz, Sosa, Farnsworth; Hawkins is the exception). Hundley for Karros and Grudz would be another exception so I'd say he's batting close to even on those deals. In fact, that deal was an amazing job by Hendry to pawn off a crappy player.
