  1. Why is it that you see them willing to trade for an impact player (and thus give up, presumably, significant minor league asset(s)) but you can't see them signing a free agent that they'd have to give up the #11 (or lower) pick in the draft for or something? Salary-related. The traded for guy presumably would be making less money than the FA, plus they'd be younger as well. I don't know. If it were a TOR pitcher (such as the oft rumored David Price), I think the intention would be to immediately sign them to an extension, for at least near market value. Also, trading for an impact player would likely take at least 2 of the Cubs' top prospects, whereas signing a FA, even one with a QO, would only cost one potential top prospect. I do think that a deal involving impact talent coming in and multiple prospects going out is a near certainty in the next year or two, but I don't think that precludes a big ticket signing.
  2. I was doing what I'm always doing on deadline day: sitting in front of a computer refreshing multiple pages, with ESPNews on the TV. It wasn't long after Gammons had just been on assuring viewers that Nomar wasn't going anywhere.
  3. Absolutely. They probably won't go after multiple big tickets, but I fully expect them to pursue (and land) at least one high profile player this coming offseason. And they're obviously not "done" building up the farm, but I think it's to the point where it won't be done at such expense to the big league club. I think we're seeing that some mind is being paid to being better next year in the reticence to deal guys like Schierholtz and Russell. I think those are deals that get made last year just to infuse the farm system more. The Cubs aren't going to spike their payroll, but I sure as hell don't see it being sub-75MM, either.

  5. How do you see Kennedy as better than Samardzija!?!?!? Ian Kennedy was a 2.3WAR player in 2012, 4.8WAR in 2011. 8K/9, 2BB/9 in 2012. 1.3WHIP in 2012, 1.03WHIP in 2011. 207IP in 2012 Shark was a 1.8WAR in 2012, 1.1 in 2011. 9K/9m 3B/9. 174IP in 2012 with a 1.295WHIP. 1.219WHIP in 2011 Shark has been getting better each year, and has been much better than Kennedy this year. Kennedy has been clearly regressing. You don't need a slide rule to work this out.
  6. It's either that, or wait for him to turn back into a pumpkin. I'm really pretty indifferent about it.
  7. Worse than Bonds, he continued to do it after being outed/outing himself and after PEDs were stigmatized and officially banned. Like Mojo said, anyone who does PEDs now is really not deserving of any sympathy.
  8. Agreed. No one was going to pay ARod what the Yanks did, and they should have to wear that [expletive] [expletive]. But I still think he'll retire. He wasn't been particularly effective when he was been on the field the last time, was in clear decline, and two full years on from that...it probably wouldn't be pretty. But if his ego could handle riding the bench to collect his check, that would be amusing. But sad at the same time (though if it came to that, the Yanks would probably just eat the money and cut him).
  9. Quality posts have been flagging in recent years for sure, but it's still better than PSD. It's not an endorsement of NSBB so much as a condemnation of PSD. But in these lean times quality discussion has been on the decline across all Cubs forums that I'm aware of.
  10. He won't go away. He wants all the attention that posting on multiple boards gives him, even if it's being universally reviled (or as he calls it, "being popular").
  11. We have like two good posters. Maybe. Yeah, no. PSD is a couple of insiders and a cloud of dust (including a few who have posted here for longer). I tried to get into that board for a while, but now I just check it during certain times to see if Marlin Bystro or ABTY have anything, but other than that it's generally lacking. Granted, I'm more of a reader than a poster in general, but it's really not even worth posting there. Even in it's weakened state NSBB is much better. There are at least a half dozen posters here that are better than any of the non-insiders there.
  12. Or Sweeney. Or they plan on getting Ellsbury and moving DeJesus to LF. Any number of things really. This does make it easy to give Lake an extended run though. Yeah, I sincerely doubt this was at all prompted by Junior. I think it has very little to do with Lake. This has been brewing for a while, and the FO no doubt realizes that Junior's flaws are.
  13. To say the very least. He's a guy who has his warts, but by all accounts has always worked his ass off, been a first class teammate and has been pretty good overall on the field, but has been treated like crap because of the contract he was given. Even when the fans have been really hard on him, he's remained positive. The way many fans have treated him is embarrassing.
  14. I understand the need to clear space for the kids to play, but I won't be pleased if the Cubs just give Sori away. He still fairly productive and more importantly, he's apparently a great influence in the clubhouse. Hope the return it at least intriguing.
  15. I'm on the fence about trading Schierholtz. He's been quite good and is signed beyond this year at a bargain price. I'd also be hesitant to deal Russell because he's one of our few good bullpen pieces. Of course you deal any of them for the right price, but I wouldn't ship those two out as easily as I might DeJesus, Gregg, etc.
  16. I never bought in on Randy Wells, I always felt like he was Cinderella at 11:59. I wasn't pissed about the trade, but I was not thrilled with giving up Hak Ju Lee. I felt Archer was a bit of a wild card due to his control issues.
  17. A number of these prospects are almost certainly going to end up being sold off as part of packages to bring in established MLB talent at some point, perhaps as early as in the coming offseason. I'd rather save the extra pieces that might be used in a scenario like the one you describe and use them as throw in sweeteners in deals for guys like David Price.
  18. His ceiling isn't very high I don't think ceiling isn't his problem, he has huge potential (based on his tools). The issue is that his game is so unrefined, though it's improving. He's pretty much the definition of a boom or bust player.
  19. What I've read indicates this counts as two strikes. One more and he's banned. And the suspension won't hurt the Brewers this year, but they're probably not going anywhere next year either, with or without Braun. His reputation within the game, which was already iffy at best, is totally ruined now. His name is [expletive].
  20. Maybe Texas measure his value on the number of starts he was going to give them and the return was going to be adjusted accordingly. Or maybe, like me, the FO was afraid of his arm blowing up at any given time and had decided they had waited as long as they were going to. Given how well Garza had been pitching, I think his value was as high as it was going to get. An early exit or a game or two like he threw against the Reds and the Cubs may not have gotten what they did.
  21. It's absolutely possible, perhaps likely, that Olt's issues aren't a result of a correctable issue, meaning he'll never fulfill his past promise. But it's far too early to say he's awful and write him off.
  22. Not sure. Some of these guys on teams in races might decide not to admit to anything and take the suspension starting next season when the teams have a whole offseason to replace them. They may not admit to anything now, but teams are definitely going to take possible suspensions into account before they make a deal.
  23. I'll take the pool for 100 Alex. Gimme Ramirez all day. Yeah, pretty much.
