  1. What does he have to gain by lying? He won't be back no matter what. Keeping himself endeared to Cubs fans, possibly.
  2. You're wrong. Wood on a one year was a no-brainer. Yeah, I have been defending Hendry, but now I am severely pissed off. If Kerry wanted a multi-year deal, that's one thing. But to cut him loose when he is willing to take a one year deal really galls me.
  3. I was sad before, now I am irritated. The fact that he would have taken a one year deal really changes my perception of this.
  4. id rather lose with wood than win without him. and i know i am not in the minority. would resigning Wood have been a smart baseball move? no. would I have done it anyway? yes. would I have been justified in doing that? hard to say If I were the GM I would have re-signed Wood. And I would have been a fool for doing it.
  5. Marmol is much more valuable working in the flexible set-up role. Of course he is. But you can bet the farm he'll be closing.
  6. The money + risk + lack of need = not much of a decision. The gap between Marmol/Wood and Gregg/Marmol is not a substantial as the risk of giving Kerry 4/40. It just isn't. If no team offers him big money, he may be back. If one does, Hendry made the right decision.
  7. The idea that the Cubs should have given Kerry a big dollar multiyear contract just because of the emotional attachment or that is wouldn't have been a bad idea is patently ludicrous. They let Kerry go because giving him a multiyear deal @ 10 million+ would have been moronic, a far poorer decision than any of the recent poor decisions. It isn't a move you make with a payroll of zero. I have been one of Wood's biggest fans for his entire Cubs tenure, but honestly, the lack of objectivity over this is mind boggling.
  8. I really don't think there were any other factors than the fact that you don't give a guy with his injury history the type of deal he's going to get unless you are in desperate need, which the Cubs aren't. There's no blame to be assigned over this, because it's the right thing to do from a business standpoint. Emotionally it really, really sucks, though. I think I might vomit the first time I see him in another uni. Well thats foolish then. He is no less a health risk than Harden. Peavy, who we are all dying to get has had arm problems the last two years and many are predicting more for him. This is a money issue. We wasted too much and now it is biting us in the butt. And yes it really sucks. It's not foolish at all. It's a move you make even in a vacuum. And Harden is going to make less than Kerry will, and the Cubs are only financially responsible for him for 2009.

  10. Kerry is going to get really good offers. I think it is pretty much a given. Maybe so. I just can't stand seeing the door shut without at least leaving it open, even if you know it's inevitable. Wood Irrationality. I'm fairly certain there was probably some asking around and tossing about of numbers that led to this.
  11. If Marmol gets traded for Peavy, the deal had better be Marmol and inconsequential throw-ins for Peavy, and not much else. Marmol isn't getting traded. Letting Kerry go pretty much cements that, IMO.
  12. Kerry is going to get really good offers. I think it is pretty much a given.
  13. Hasn't Dempster been an All-Star twice? Yes, in his only two good years in his career. This isn't about Ryan Dempster. Letting Wood go when you have a cheap in house option and Kerry is going to get 3-4 year offers in the range of 10-12 million per is not a bad move. It sucks for those of us who really love the guy, but unless Kerry would have signed for 60% of other offers and for half the years, this is the right move. A bullpen with Marmol and Wood at the back end >>>>>>>>>>>>> a bullpen with Gregg and Marmol at the back end. We now lose the option of bringing probably the most dominant reliever in baseball into tight spots because of this BS "closers can only work the 9th inning" mentality, and we'll sorely miss it next season. Of course Marmol/Wood is better than Gregg/Marmol. But the risk of signing Kerry to a competitive offer giver his injury history is just too high. Listen, I love Kerry as much as anyone. But signing him @ 3/30 or more would be even dumber than trading Jose Ceda for Kevin Gregg.
  14. Nope. Then again, I'm not calling Hendry an idiot, I just hate what he's doing here. I'm sick of him focusing on acquiring other people's middle aged relievers, whether it's via trade or free agency. It's not stupid to let Wood walk. It is odd to me to let Wood walk so you can resign Dempster. I don't think Hendry re-signs Wood even if you take Dempster completely out of the equation. Giving Demps a 4/55 deal would be foolish, but it wouldn't have anything to do with Wood.
  15. People are calling Hendry an idiot for trading Ceda for Kevin effing Gregg There's some of both going on here.

  17. Wood at 3/24 would still be a better bet than Demp at 4/55. At least Wood has had more than one season of success in his career. Wood will get offers for 3-4 years @10-11, I'll bet. It is upsetting, but I'd let him go before trying to compete with such offers. And success isn't the issue here. It's health. Dempster isn't exactly the picture of health, but he's a lot less iffy than Wood. And for the record, I am no fan of re-signing Ryan for those terms, either. But categorizing Hendry letting Wood go as a screw up would be a bit knee jerk.
  18. If Wood is leaving it really sucks, but at the same time it isn't shocking. Kerry couldn't really sign for less than 7-8 million per, and the Cubs have Marmol in waiting (though I'd rather he remain in his current role). I love Kerry and it will be difficult to reconcile with the sight of him in another uniform, but signing him at near market value for 3-4 years given his injury history would be foolish at best.
  19. I have no idea the source. Getting Peavy and getting rid of Theriot would make my offseason.
  20. erm...no. Iowa will improve a bit from a team that won 6 Big Ten games last season. If you say so.
  21. The only thing more abysmal is whoever is doing the pbp. Terrible.
  22. I busted out the black on black Cubs hat for a while after the LDS loss, but now I am back to the regular cap (I wear a Cubs hat at least 70% of the time I am awake). I don't know why anyone wouldn't. I mean I have religiously worn my Cubs gear whenever possible for 20+ years, and through some really bad, bad, embarrassing years. Relatively speaking, these are good times to be a Cubs fan.
  23. Care to explain this? I was a big fan of Hermida, but he took a step backward last year. Do you just happen to think it was a fluke because he's still so young, or is there something I'm missing? Falling off a little was probably to be expected with as high as his BABIP was in '07, but his '08 is masked by terrible numbers in a terrible hitters park. His .288/.364/.487/.851 line away from home as a 24 year old is pretty stellar, and with his age and minor league pedigree you can expect him to improve. He'd also combine with Soto to give a great cost effective pair of hitters to ease the pain of Lee/Ramirez/Soriano declining or leaving the team. As you know, throwing out half of someone's stats isn't the best thing to do. Not generally, but when you have a guy who plays in an extreme pitchers/hitter's park, it gives you a decent idea of what you might expect out of him in a more neutral setting. Not looking more at road stats when judging guys who play in places like Florida and San Diego or Colorado is really not an better an idea.
  24. Dunn in RF would be a horror show, and I certainly don't read Dunn's name in between the lines of Lou's "younger and more athletic" statement. Can you imagine how bad a Soriano/Fuku/Dunn OF would be? Here's an idea: get Dunn to play 1B, trade Lee, trade for Hermida.
