  1. People who mock Wrigley for being a band box probably aren't too aware that there are a lot of days like this.
  2. If you know it's coming, you just cheat and start your swing early. And if you get much of the bat on it, you have a decent shot at getting a hit. You can't cheat on a sweeping slider or hammer curveball. I played against guys in HS who could bring it at 90+, but they usually had no other pitches. I could hit them (at least make solid contact). Hell, at that velo you don't have to take a full swing - just choke up a bit and try your best to "catch" the ball with the barrel of the bat. I was lost against anything with decent movement or contrasting speeds. If the fastball has good (just about any) movement, then yeah, that's a different story. EDIT: of course, this is assuming you have a respectable level of hand/eye coordination.
  3. OH GOD I'VE BEEN LIVING A LIE. We all have, apparently. It's going to take a collective effort to cope with this epiphany. I hope we're up to it.
  4. escobar i can understand, but gamel? he's either going to be awful defensively at 3B or be limited to corner OF and 1B, all of which are filled on the brewers. i'd think that they'd want to trade gamel. i don't think happ is that great; the phillies would be smart to sell now while his value is high. They'll need Gamel when Fielder walks. Hart is also becoming a real question mark.
  5. Do any of you people pay any attention to anything? What seems to be the problem? The Cardinals have had a below average offense on the season, and you believe Matt Holliday makes them stacked. Yeah, Holliday helps, but it doesn't turn them into a juggernaut by any stretch.
  6. Hawk's problem is that he's more fan than announcer. At the very least he should be relegated to analysis.
  7. Slight edge, at best. And if Sori and Bradley come anywhere near their normal numbers in the second half, no edge at all.
  8. Fukudome Theriot Lee Ramirez Bradley Soto Soriano Fontenot This lineup is just as talented. Now, staying healthy and playing to your talent level hasn't been the Cubs' forte this year, but if you are looking at potential lineups/production - this lineup is just as good. The gap between Pujols and your best player, kinda voids all the rest of the comparisons. One player doesn't void the entire rest of a lineup, sorry. Albert isn't that good. Barry Bonds on roids wasn't that good.
  9. This. Duncan wasn't blocking anybody, unless this was some lame attempt to prevent Daddy Duncan from crying because his son would be riding the bench (which he will be in Boston, no doubt). If the Cards wanted to acquire another OF, all that had to be done was to bench him.
  10. Not a chance you could catch up to Farnsworth's stuff. If you're vying for a walk, that's a different story. But I seriously doubt anyone here could catch up to a 102MPH heater. The best chance any of us would have would be against a guy like Farnsworth, provided he throws that straight arrow fastball. Anyone with a respectable amount of hand-eye can gear up for a no-break fastball if they are allowed to prepare. It is the breaking/off speed stuff (not just that it is hard to hit, but that it sets up the fastball and vice versa) that is the problem.
  11. Yes, but it goes to show there is no such thing as "not a chance", or "absolute won't happen." I don't really want Phillips, since he is kind of overrated. I was just trying to say to reds44 that he may feel "not a chance" of a Phillips to a Cubs trade, there is no way you can say 100% not a chance in sports. Okay, the chances are statistically insignificant. So much so that discussing the possibility is an absolute waste of time.
  12. To look this feeble against those pitchers and that ballpark is inexcusable.
  13. The Phillies keep running pitcher out there with ERAs in the 5-7.00 range and the Cubs can't push across even one freaking run. I'm not prone to being reactionary, but this is absolutely pathetic.
  14. I think this is the most certain thing that will happen at the deadline. But my guesses: 1: Erik Bedard to the Dodgers for a couple of prospects. (Halladay is highly unlikely to be moved) 2: The Cards trade Ankiel, Wallace and a prospect to the A's for Matt Holliday. 3. Braves trade Javier Vazquez to the Rangers for Hank Blalock. I don't think Holliday will bring that kind of return at this point. His numbers haven't been bad, but they haven't been nearly what they were in Colorado. What return? A guy without a position with mediocre power and a guy who sucks? Brett Wallace is their only real chip outside of Rasmus, who they apparently won't trade. I'd think they'd save him to trade for something they actually need. IMO, their rotation outside of Carp and Wainwright is more suspect than their offense, particularly since Ludwick started hitting again.

  16. I think that part of the reason he isn't being hyped is his established history of great first halves followed by second half fades.
  17. To be honest, it looks like something your grandmother keeps in the hutch until it is time to serve a holiday beverage from it. A trophy? Not so much.
  18. I'm not counting on seeing him at all. They're saying a couple more weeks. They also said Glaus would be back at the end of May. Then June. Then after the break. I actually think you'll see the Cards sign him to a 2 year deal. DeRosa? I doubt it.
  19. No, it wouldn't be enough. Maybe if we were the only bidders, but someone is going to offer 2-3 good MLB ready players for Halladay.
  20. I don't think you guys realize who Halladay is or how much leverage Ricciardi has if you think Wallace is going to get it done. This will cost whoever gets him considerably more than the Crew gave up for C.C. last year. Wallace is good, but not much if any more than Matt LaPorta, who the Brewers had to give for 1/2 a season of C.C. in a deeper market. At the very least, other teams will make better offers than a Brett Wallace centered package.
  21. Exactly. They could, but I suspect Mozeliak will have to offer Rasmus just to get Ricciardi's full attention. This Wallace + a couple other prospects for Halladay nonsense is a STL pipe dream.
  22. Kerry Wood. I'll always consider Kerry a Cub.
