  1. Are we really going to lean toward the idea that Lou is horrible? Sure he's not perfect, but he's had more success as Cubs manager than anyone I can remember. He dumps young guys he doesn't like. That may upset me some, but I also know that he's given some young/minors guys a chance that previous managers like Dusty never would have (Theriot, Fontenot to name a couple). An argument can be made that Lou saved Hendry's job, even. Maybe that's why he allows him more input (maybe more than he should).
  2. The fundamental difference is that there are tons of guys capable of being commissioner of baseball, and only a handful capable of being major-league players. There are tons of people who are capable from a business standpoint -- who could run the day-to-day and the administrative side of the job. Part of Selig's value is in his history & experience with the game though. That narrows the field down a bit, although I don't totally disagree with your point.
  3. this is what I don't get though: if you buy the package, you're seeing the exact same commercials, so who cares? by blacking me out on Pittsburgh games but NOT giving me FSN Pittsburgh, you're taking away someone who would be seeing those ads....it just makes no sense at all Yeah it's so convoluted at this point nobody can even figure it out anymore. I thought someone in MLB had said they were going to work on lifting some of the senseless blackouts, but I haven't heard any follow up since. I know the original intent was to try to funnel viewers to the local advertising market. That just doesn't work anymore -- people have way too many viewing options. But now you've got markets criss-crossed all over the place, and people who consider themselves fans of a "local" team and they don't get the games for some arcane reason nobody can trace. It's just a mess. Just give people the option to purchase the package and turn on all the games. Sure, it leaves out some people who can't afford the package, but it would be a positive step in the right direction.
  4. All of it is speculation. How does anyone know that Lou is now making the decisions for Hendry?
  5. ok then, take your pick- Hendry: -has really mismanaged his prospects and how to get the best value for them over the last few yrs -has put together an absolutely piss-poor farm system, which with the resources he's had at hand, is downright indefensible at least one of the two statements is correct The first is more true, IMO.
  6. And Pittsburgh's great D couldn't handle Arizona's great O in the 4th quarter. Arizona stomped Pittsburgh's defense, and won because Arizona's offense was too incompetent to tackle the fatass punk on the interception. Arizona's mediocre defense gave up less points than Pittsburgh's defense wins championships defense. That interception was a fantastic defensive call, and Harrison got that touchdown because he is, despite his bush league crap, one of the best defensive players in the NFL. And that defensive play is one of the most memorable plays in Super Bowl history. I have no problem giving the Cardinals offense their due. I'm more of a balance kind of guy when it comes to building a football team. Bagging on the whole "defense wins championships" line is fine with me, as long as we don't take it the other way and claim that defense is not important, which is what it sounds like some people want to do.
  7. That completely ignores the other half of the equation, which is the Cardinals not having a good enough D to stop a mediocre offense from driving for the winning score.
  8. Yeah, but you know....when it came down to crunch time, and the Cardinals needed a big stop, that shaky defense they have just couldn't get it done for them. That's true but they had already had to come up big too many times before then. Crunch time is at the end. Also, Pitt's offense was 22nd overall, 17th in passing this year. It's not like they were trying to defend Joe Montana and Jerry Rice out there. If you are going to argue the Cards' defense earlier in the game, then what about how Pitt shut down the Cards for the first 2 1/2 quarters? The Cards were scoring 30 points in the playoffs per game. Pitt's defense kept them below that threshold yesterday. Defense played a large role yesterday, as it usually does. Wait, you weren't being sarcastic ealier? No. I thought he was, I still believe defense is a big part of championship football.
  9. Yeah, but you know....when it came down to crunch time, and the Cardinals needed a big stop, that shaky defense they have just couldn't get it done for them. 10. 2007, Rich Hill posts almost 200 IP and a ERA+ of 119. Now he nets us a lousy PTBNL. Talk about selling low.
  11. Wow, PTBNL? This guy was a main starter in our rotation a couple years back, look how far he fell.
  12. I just hate seeing a good team get worse for no good reason. There was no good reason to dump DeRosa and bring in Aaron Miles. We're still easily the best team in the Central, but we're not as good a team as we were last year. That's not the way to excite a fanbase after a monumental collapse in the playoffs. I don't like the decrease in the margin of error. A couple significant injuries for large portions of the year and we're no longer easily the best team in the Central. I'm looking at players like Bradley -- totally unknown how many games he'll give us. Ramirez -- what if his legs get chippy on us again? Zambrano -- how's that shoulder going to be this year? But, I suppose it could happen any year. I'm not freaking out or anything, just not feeling quite as comfortable as I hoped I would.
  13. They should just let people who are paying for the package get all the games. I understand this need to protect advertisers, but I don't think it should apply to the packages. If you want to throw some additional dollars at local advertisers and raise the price on the package slightly, then go ahead. The price is going to continue to creep up anyway, it always does.
  14. Yeah, but you know....when it came down to crunch time, and the Cardinals needed a big stop, that shaky defense they have just couldn't get it done for them.
  15. For me it's not anger, just a little frustration because I would very much like the Cubs to begin developing some younger talent rather than trading all of them away. But I'm not angry over the trade. And I'm certainly not going to fly off the handle over trading away Ronny Cedeno.
  16. Except that job way way way beneath him. Yeah. Better than unemployment, right? Most certainly.
  17. what does buying the trib have to do with anything? I don't know if it's just stupid rumor or what, but if it's true I'm not doing it to get Cubs tickets: http://www.northsidebaseball.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=52270
  18. I'm also worried about our bench compared to last year.
  19. LOL, wow. Maybe I'll just go see the Cubs when they play at Miller Park this year, and call it a year. Maybe a trip to St. Louis... I love Wrigley but I'm not buying the Tribune and then pay $85 for decent seats on top of it.
  20. I wouldn't go that far -- bottom 5 GMs don't pull off some of the good moves Jimbo's gotten done. This one is confusing though. Any chance Heilman has a bounce back season in '09? He wasn't too bad in '07.
  21. He has definitely said in the past that he'd prefer not to move from leadoff. He has definitely said in the past that he'll hit wherever they tell him to. No word on whether he was saying that while muffing fly ball in front of the under armour sign. He said he'd hit anywhere they asked him to, but then he muffed some flyballs in front of the under armor sign, and he was probably wearing an under armor shirt when he did that, and the irony is too much for me, so he was probably lying when he said that.
  22. He's like everything else in life. You take the good with the bad. I try to focus on the good. When he goes on one of his tears at the plate, it's a beautiful thing to see. Let's hope to see a couple more hot streaks than usual this year.
  23. Hahaha, wow. That's got to be a sick joke or something. I'm not buying a damn paper.
  24. My personal feeling is that you are wrong, but the other part of me thinks Reinsdorf doesn't give a crap what the Bulls do as long as they aren't embarrassing him personally, like you said 98-03 bad. If the Blackhawks continue to sell out, and then the United Center empties out for Bulls games, that might change his mind a little.
