  1. I hate losing during that day, not being able to scream at my TV, then going home and having nothing to yell at because the game is over. DAMMIT! ....just doesn't work as well on a message board.
  2. and it won't make a difference because you can't yell someone into not making fielding errors. True. But if I have to watch sucky baseball then I'd prefer a few Lou blowups just for the entertainment value. I hope he doesn't keep that stuff in the locker room.
  3. No, seems like it happens all the time. I'm sure the stats show it isn't the case, but it still seems that way.
  4. Eat the children! Carlos Lee burger.
  5. Settling down after giving up 3 runs in the first still doens't help us much. We should be able to win when the starting pitching gives up 3. /cosign
  6. Someone wake me when it's feast time.
  7. Installing a rubber room? It's too expensive. A lobotomy will work just as well, and can be self-administered.
  8. I don't know how high any team's winning percentages are when they go down 3 runs in the top of the 1st and they have Jason Marquis on the mound. :? sure, for this game, but people are writing off Marquis for the length of the contract because of one bad inning I think people are writing off Marquis because of one bad career. Wow, joined up yesterday and already picking iFights in every thread you've posted in. Great job. You're a welcome addition here. Isn't that Goony is disguise? :? What's going on here? Well, color me totally confused. Goony's login went kaput post-hack, so he made a new profile. That's him. Wow, that sucks. Sorry to attack goony, I didn't know. go ahead and attack him. he likes it.
  9. You are all delusional. The Cubs game was canceled due to snow. No baseball at all. None. Don't touch me.
  10. Let's have a look at this pitching line: 160.7 IP 7-13 W/L record 4.82 ERA 1.512 WHIP 82 ERA+ Age....25 1st full year of starting. Should his team have relegated this pitcher to the bullpen in favor of an aging vet with no velocity who is coming off arm surgery? In short, should this have been enough to determine that this pitcher wasn't going to be a good starter? BTW, Guzman hasn't even had the benefit of a full season of starting, so even this is skewed against Angel. Hope you didn't say yes, this pitcher is Randy Johnson.
  11. If he goes for that all or nothing shot, and somehow comes up short, then forces the team to cut back the way Arizona has had to do, it will cause a lot more pain. Given the revenues the Cubs generate compared to the Diamondbacks, I find this unlikely though obviously nothing is impossible. He did run the Suns much better.
  12. The Cubs don't have any deferred contracts. They have locked in contracts for the next several years, but that's not the same as deferred. Arizona is STILL paying for guys who played on the 2001 World Series champion team and are not and have not been on the team for several years now. Randy Johnson is still receiving deferred payments from his previous stint with the D'Backs and he's back with the team again this year. Arizona is still in a financial mess from Colangelo. Yes, but he had a much smaller fanbase, far less revenue, and was starting from scratch. He did mortgage the future to get a World Series win, but I think it's most important that he actually got the championship. It wasn't just spending money -- it was spending it on the right players to win. I'd rather have Cuban because I'd love to see that kind of shakeup, but I wouldn't be upset with Colangelo. In my mind it would sure beat a big corporate owner, even though he'd need financial partners to pull it off.
  13. I think the overall point is valid in that it would be nice to see more of our relievers come from within.
  14. It'll be cold...wind blowing in...he should be fine...he'll save the truly bad games for August...when we're hopefully in contention and it can really hurt us. It's funny, most of my Yankee fan friends are saying the samething about A-Rod. They all still hate him. I have no idea why. Once people form an opinion about a guy, it's nigh impossible to shake.
  15. who pitched like crap last year. If we don't sign Miller, then we're going into the season with our fifth starter being: a) Mark Prior, who can't stay healthy and when he was healthy last year, he got hammered... or... (b) Angel Guzman, who can't stay healthy and was really, really bad for the Cubs last year. I'd rather have more options, even if it turns out that Miller doesn't have what it takes to get big league hitters out. Agreed, if we don't want Miller in there, then like I said yesterday, it's best to go and find a trade for someone who can fill the spot well and let Guzman develop. I'd never turn down the prospect of more options, but there's no indication that Hendry is going to seek a trade at the moment. Guzman still has upside, which is why I'd prefer to find out if he can realize it.
  16. Again, Guzman hasn't proven he can do this either. And all the stuff in the world doesn't get guys out... go ask Juan Cruz if you don't believe me. =D> The question is, shall we trot out a veteran in the #5 spot who will get lit up and then be run out of the league? Or should we get a young gun with some upside the experience to find out if he has a future? I'll go the latter, all day and all night. The Cubs went with Miller instead. I'm not going to cry about it, but I strongly suspect Guzman will be that #5 fairly soon anyway. If that's the case, then right now we're just burning starts for little reason.
  17. If I had been the GM, he wouldn't have been on the team in this capacity. well okay, except he is on the team. Now, the Cubs didn't hand him the job - they had an open competition between Prior, Miller and Guzman. Miller pitched better than Prior and Guzman. Which begs the question, why have a competition for the 5th spot in the rotation if you're not going to give the winner a fair shot in the regular season? Eh? Guzman looked to have better stuff in ST than Miller & Prior. Miller: 3.64 ERA, 17.1 IP, 22 H, 4 BB, 16 K Guzman: 5.79 ERA, 13.2 IP, 18 H, 1 BB, 7 K They were both hittable, but Miller struck guys out at a better rate. "Stuff" is great but isn't worth a whole lot if you don't know how to locate it. It's misguided to allow ST results to guide the endgame though. Stuff counts for more in ST than it should in the regular season. I'd have preferred Guzman because I believe he's the future......and Miller isn't. Regardless of Miller's results in ST it was clear to me he would struggle in the regular season based on the fact that he's a former power pitcher who now struggles to hit 88 on the gun. Prior's not ready, period. That leaves Guzman.
  18. Pitchers generally go downhill after their arms go under the knife. This is less true than it once was, but for the most part you can chart a guy's fall from grace back to the first major arm surgery that he had. Carpenter has been the exception, and good for him. But it's not a suprise that eventually he has to pay the piper. I don't wish injury on anyone, and want to beat the Cards for real this year -- not some AAA affiliate's substitute pitchers. I'm just saying a guy like Carpenter has been ahead of the curve for awhile now on the injury front, and was due for at least a bit of a letdown.
