  1. First off, the whoever would have traded for him would have him for only 1 month (plus playoffs if they make it). What do you expect for 1 month? Plus, if they gave us anybody decent now, that person would have to clear waivers and somebody decent wouldn't. Thus, the PTBNL could be decent (Kottaras is still officially a PTBNL for the Sox) but probably not because their getting a so-so power bat for the bench for a month. As for next season, Nevin has no desire to be a platoon player or bench player for any length of time, thus, he wouldn't re-sign anyway.
  2. And 3 of them can still get the chance. Hell, more if they work out of the bullpen. And it's not like they just showed up and barely got a chance to play. If Miller's gets shelled after a couple starts, boom, pull him and put a rookie back in. Now we know for sure. I notice we keep making many of the same points. You must be real smart. :)
  3. I agree, but if Miller can regain any of his old form, he could be a very solid pitcher at a cheap price. Miller's not going 7 innings a game anyway, so why not bring in a youngster from the pen after Miller goes (hopefully) 5?
  4. The problem is, who's truly more deserving? I'm all for playing the kids at this point, but I don't want kids that clearly not ready up here doing nothing but hurting their confidence. As long as Miller doesn't push out Z, Hill or Marshall I'm ok. Marmol needs to be in the minors to work on his control and Mateo and Guzman could use the work down there to. The problem with that is the minor league season is over in 4 games. Even if the minor league season wasn't coming to a finish, I'm not sure why these guys couldn't work in the big leagues. D'oh, I completely forgot the minors was ending, it's late and I'm tired. I do think they could work in the majors but for Marmol especially, he's looked borderline terrible with his control. Moving to the minors would take a little pressure off of him in that the hitters he faces would not be as good, thus he could work on his control. Even with the minors ending, I still think Miller should get a start or two and see if he's got anything. If he does have nothing, put the kids back in there. Exactly. I personally doubt Miller has that much left, but he very well could. With the potential upside, though, it's a great idea to just shove him aside. Why not give him a chance?

  7. I really doubt one good month would bring Miller more than what he got this year. Plus we might get a discount because we gave him the opportunity. Ultimately I'd say he gets another $1m/1 yr deal. He's all ours the rest of this season, he's not signed after it. If he comes up and sucks, we just let him go in the offseason, no risk at all.
  8. The question is, were they willing to do this a month ago? This seems like a move purely out of desperation and most teams aren't this desperate in July. Still a gosh awful trade for San Diego but I'm not sure this was available to Hendry.
  9. SEC games are the best to watch, though I love most all the college football games. If the SEC and Big Ten didnt play at the same time id watch more SEC games. I cant stand to watch the pac 10 on saturday night. The SEC saturday night games are usually pretty damn good so ill catch a couple of those games. Its about time the Big Ten adopted some saturday night football this year. I am looking forward to seeing what the Big House looks like after the renovation. Its about time they updated it. There's nothing like a primetime SEC matchup on a Saturday night, Florida/Tennessee, LSU/Auburn, etc. Nothing better. :D Lets not forget SC/GA next Saturday. Back to back national TV appearances to open the season sounds good to me. Can't disagree with that. Almost any game in the SEC is better than watching the Pac 10, Big East, or even the Big 12, for that matter. Big 10 then SEC. I would put those 2 above any other conference, in that order. Are you drunk? ;) Its the SEC and then everyone else, though this year the Big Ten is a solid second. I have to say I agree, although I typically enjoy Big Ten games more just because I live in the Midwest. I was referring to watching, not talent. Man, there's nothing like the passion and desire of an SEC game. Right now I'm watching South Carolina/Miss St and the feel of the game is just so much better than any other conference I've watched. Gosh, I can't wait for Saturday at 5:30 when over 100,000 people will be going crazy in Neyland. =P~ It's why I love college football. :D
  10. You may have a good point about Fontenot. His minor league numbers look pretty solid, I wouldn't mind having him up now over Theriot and Bynum.

  12. Ok, Bynum's not great, I agree, but neither is Theriot. I'm willing to give both the benefit of the doubt in a crap season to find out for sure who can play and who can't though.
  13. I agree Theriot should play, but so should Bynum. I prefer a platoon with them so that both get some playing time.
  14. I agree with most of that. I like Theriot well enough but don't think it's that great a deal if Bynum starts some games.
  15. Maybe, I don't really like Bynum that much. Just trying to figure out why Theriot is so much better.
  16. Theriot was the much better minor league hitter, in addition to being the superior defender. Well, neither is really a prospect. Theriot is 26 and is a minor-league ecksteinish player with versatility and solid defense and Bynum just sucks. Right. Theriot has the ceiling of a utility player. Bynum's is less than that, also known as someone not good enough to play in the major leagues. How do similar minor league numbers equate to different projections for each player? I think both could be utility players but Theriot maybe a little more valuable (almost completely because of defense).
  17. Just curious, why do you prefer Theriot to Bynum so much? They are the same age and neither is truly a prospect anyway. Have you watched Bynum single handely LOSE 2 games for the Cubs the past week. I don't like his defense, I'll admit Theriot's better defensively. My point is, why is Theriot a prospect and Bynum is not? Theriot was the much better minor league hitter, in addition to being the superior defender. Theriot may have been a little better but "much better" is an overstatement. Here are their numbers: Bynum- career .275 BA .347 OBP .363 SLG .710 OPS 2000-A age 20 .256BA, .335OBP, .310SLG, .645OPS 2001-High A age 21 .261 .329 .350 .679 2002-High A age 22 .306 .385 .390 .775 2003-AA age 23 .263 .344 .363 .707 2004-age 24 AA-.268 .332 .358 .690 AAA- .283 .339 .364 .703 2005-AAA age 25 .278 .347 .384 .731 Theriot- career .265 BA .355 OBP .331 SLG .686 OPS 2001-High A age 21 .204 .343 .252 .595 2002-A age 22 .252 .335 .313 .648 2003-age 23 A-.259 .353 .318 .671 2004-High A age 24 .273 .367 .342 .709 2005-AA age 25 .304 .365 .391 .756 So, Theriot had a better OBP, Bynum a better SLG. Bynum put up his numbers at a younger age/higher level than Theriot. Again, why is Theriot a prospect and Bynum is not? I don't understand.

  21. Wow! I had no idea they were married. Now I wish the Titans had signed him. :D
  22. Just a suggestion, you might want to PM him. This might get bumped all the way off the board before Bruce gets a chance to see it. Good idea, I may try that. Thanks.
  23. Bruce, if you can answer this I would appreciate it. Mods, if this is in the wrong forum I sincerely apologize and feel free to move it. I recently got a job working for a local newspaper as the sports writer. So far, I enjoy the job and may want to pursue higher levels. My question is what is the procedure to do that? Would I go from my current paper (twice weekly) to a daily paper? If you can help me out I'd appreciate it and I figured you'd know because your in the business. Thanks.
  24. Not to be nitpicky but they signed A.J. Feeley the QB. Not Jay the kicker, at least not that I've heard. Sorry...you're right. Brain fart. How could you possibly mistake a great player like A.J.? :)
