  1. Bela Korlyi (?) just called the judges incompetent. =D>
  2. It looked like Nastia had better scores across the board than the Chinese 5-year old and that's why when you take away the worst scores, you're taking away an 8.9 from the Chinese girl and a 9.0 from Nastia.
  3. As usual, Nastia did a better routine than the Chinese but the judges have handed the gold to the Chinese. Some stupid, ridiculous tie breaker rules that they probably made up off the cuff and on the spot.
  4. This is pissing me off. I hate subjective judging.
  5. Nastia looks ready to slowly and painfully murder every one of the judges right now.
  6. The likelihood is that these announcers are broadcasting from a studio in New York. Pretty much every announcing duo I've heard - save for basketball, gymnastics and swimming - have been. I doubt this would be an exception. I have heard them say several times in other events that they are not on the site. I think it is accepted that it's fine if you aren't there as long as you tell the audience. I didn't hear these guys say they aren't there, but I may have missed it. I haven't heard either. I don't have a problem with them broadcasting from another location, but it definitely has to suck for them. I'd be pretty pissed if I was covering an event somewhere like China and didn't have the opportunity to go there. There was an article in the NY Times about this issue. They are indeed in New York City in studio 8H, better known as the set of SNL. Most of the broadcasters are limited to exactly what the television audience sees. NBC apparently agreed to do so to keep its on-site contingent small and save money. Interesting. I hadn't seen that before - thanks.
  7. :banghead: Nastia ties with the Chinese dude/chick/kid/baby and it looks like they're randomly going to "computer simulate" the trophy to China. Elfie's not happy.
  8. Unless the Cubs actually win it all it seems pretty unlikely that they come back next year with essentially the same team except Pie replacing Edmonds as the LH platoon with Johnson in CF. Pie is going to be hard pressed to match the production that Edmonds has given so far so it would mean they go into 2009 with a less potent offense than they have right now. I would think that Hendry will get more creative than this and mix it up to try to upgrade the team if they do wind up falling short. I think the ownership situation and the backloading that Hendry's done will force the status quo. There just isn't room for another big contract unless: a) they let Dempster and/or Wood walk (but those moves leave holes to fill); b) they move a contract or two (Marquis, Lee, Fukudome, or Lilly); or c) new ownership approves a big payroll increase. A trade with Pie, Theriot, and/or Hill as the centerpiece seems the most likely route to an upgrade. Ownership should be settled in plenty of time for a mid season acquisition or two. Take this with a great big Paul Sullivan sized grain of salt: http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-080817-cubs-center-field-edmonds-johnson-pie,1,5287607.story I am getting Gary Gaetti flashbacks. Sounds like pure conjecture to me. He makes no mention of sources or even anything that gives him that idea other than that Edmonds has been really good as a Cub. I think it's Sullivan throwing his opinion into an article. Also, toward the end, Sullivan even says Edmonds' return is "less certain" because he may retire after this season. I'm not too worried.
  9. =D> =D> =D> =D> I love the Summer Olympics.

  12. Yes, this is a very pleasant match to watch. Oh yea, May-Treanor and Walsh are really good at volleyball too. :D
  13. This quote sort of stood out to me. What do we make of this, I wonder? Fans that think in numbers and talent first, as many around here do, might discount or dismiss the value of team chemistry in baseball. But that doesn't mean the players, coaches, GMs, and owners devalue it. That's what you make of it. I definitely think there's something to team chemistry, but wasn't sure if this quote was truly heartfelt by DeRo or just kinda talking up a buddy.
  14. I said keep him beyond this year. Granted he was bad following up his great 2005 year, but at 28 there's a good chance he's figuring it out and will be good. Will he be a terrific shutdown reliever? I don't know, but I think he can be a solid lefty out of the pen. Plus, even after a strong showing this year, he should remain relatively cheap.
  15. I didn't expect this performance from him this year, but I knew he was capable of it. I just didn't think Demp was capable of what he's done to this point.
  16. This quote sort of stood out to me. What do we make of this, I wonder? I find that kind of unnerving, actually. But at the same time, probably just a bit of puffing by DeRosa. I think DeRosa is trying to act as Dempster's agent here. This is a subtle reminder from the players (ie from DeRosa) to the front office as to how important Ryan Dempster is to the clubhouse. I think the first two order of business this offseason (after the sell becomes final) will be locking up both Dempster and Wood, before they look at free agents. I'm debating right now whether that quote - if it's the overall opinion of the team - should persuade me to change my mind. Right now, I don't want to see Demp back. We have cheaper options for the rotation and, with Z, Harden and Lilly locked up, there's little reason to lock up 10-12 million more for Demp. I like him, but our assests simply could be allocated better, I think. If letting him go will cause a huge rift, though, I may tend to lean toward bringing him back.
  17. I had to go with Dempster. Can't go wrong at all with Edmonds, but I had no faith at all that Dempster would be much better than mediocre. I certainly didn't think he'd be one of the better starters in baseball. I expected Edmonds to suck, but thought there was the slimmest of possibilities that he could be good again given that (unlike Dempster) he'd been good in the past. No expectations for either, but Dempster gets the vote because he had little prior starting success.
  18. nice to see we're on the same page Now we just have to figure out how to get on her page.
  19. The point I think you're missing is that a .734 OPS is likely not DLee's ceiling, even at this point. It's what he's produced to this point, but he's still very capable of posting an .850 or so OPS the rest of the season - which is likely more than what Hoff would do. Granted, there's a chance that he could continue OPSing .730 the rest of the year, but with a hitter with his history, I'll take my chances that with a bit more rest here and there he'll work his way out of it.
  20. This quote sort of stood out to me. What do we make of this, I wonder?
  21. The U.S. women's indoor volleyball team eliminated Poland earlier to guarantee themselves the number 2 seed in the medal portion of the tournament. And the duo of Branagh/Youngs in women's beach volleyball just lost to China. That duo of Americans are now eliminated from Olympic play. And Xue Cheng (of the Chinese beach volleyball team) is really, really hot.
  22. i am going to predict that michigan state does what they always do, start out good, lose a game to a good team that they should've won, then go in the toilet. I think that phase is over for them since they got rid of John L. Smith. that's what everyone said when they got rid of bobby williams. Good point.
  23. i am going to predict that michigan state does what they always do, start out good, lose a game to a good team that they should've won, then go in the toilet. I think that phase is over for them since they got rid of John L. Smith. They struggled after a 4-0 start last year, but I'd argue that was just regression to their true talent rather than going into the toilet.
  24. I had a dream last night we re-signed Edmonds to a one-year deal. Most everybody here were pissed, I recall.
  25. Pti did a segment about it and wilbon basically called out ESPNs east coast bias. It was glorious. Nice! Except isn't Manny on the West Coast now? He was saying that this was only news because Manny used to play for the Red Sox. It wasn't as good as it could've been' date=' though, because he said "Sawks" and I die a little inside every time I hear that.[/quote'] Ahhhhh, now I get it. And Wilbon always says "Sawks" when referring to the Red Sox.
