  1. "he is a shifty, shifty guy." "tease every year with job openings at other schools." "Slip out of Atlanta in the dead of night leaving only notes behind to tell your players that you've left two days after guaranteeing to your owner's face that you won't leave midseason" Oh you won't hear me defend Petrino's character at all. I'm just talking about Nutt and that whole firing. I will defend Petrino purely as a coach, and I think LSU and Bama will have some competition in a couple of years. IMO, Petrino sorta fell into Ark's lap after a shoddy coaching search. He is a good coach, and UA put blinders on to the rest and hired him. They just REALLY wanted Nutt gone and then REALLY needed to name a head coach when they hired Petrino. Petrino has his own issues, but Nutt is a crazy mofo and NOT a great guy. OK, Big Ten guys: How good is Ryan Mallett...seriously? It's very hard to buy that Arkansas wanted a better character coach so they fired Nutt and hired Petrino. I understand that's likely what they're trying to claim, but if they truly wanted a better character coach they would have hired almost anyone else.

"Slip out of Atlanta in the dead of night leaving only notes behind to tell your players that you've left two days after guaranteeing to your owner's face that you won't leave midseason" plus there was the continual flirting with auburn, as well as other jobs, then leaving for atlanta just a year into a new contract at louisville. if you're firing nutt because of character you don't turn around and hire an even bigger snake in the grass. Precisely. Petrino was a great hire and probably an improvement (however slight) over Nutt. He is not, though, a guy you hire because you wanted a coach with great character. It'd be like the Raiders hiring Nick Saban because they want great values and loyalty instilled in their players.

  4. If the issue you have with a coach is his character, do you hire Bobby Petrino or Nick Saban?
  5. Yeah, I heard that it was an issue with character and I started to believe it. But then Arkansas hired Bobby Petrino. I don't believe it anymore.
  6. I'm in the minority I'm sure, but I personally consider Auburn to have won a National Championship in 2004. It's the SEC homer in me, I suppose. It was one of the biggest travesties the BCS has wrought yet. It should have been USC and Auburn in that game.
  7. As they probably would have had they not been screwed.
  8. it probably depends on who they bring in to replace him, but i don't think tuberville will be out of a job for long. Go 47-16 over the last five seasons and you lose your job. Compare that to Miss. St's reluctance to fire Croom after he went 21-38 over that same time span (and 8 of those 21 wins came in one year!). First of all OleMissCub on your sig pic-trust me, I feel your pain. I'm telling you, alot of ppl are rumbling about Tuberville to Miss St. That would be bad news for Oxford I think. While I believe that firing Tuberville was a big mistake, you cannot really compare Auburn and Miss St the last 5 years. Auburn is a traditional power with SEC caliber facilities. Miss State 5 years ago when Croom was hired was in a black hole, coming off bigtime probation from the Jackie Sherrill days. On top of that, it's Starkville, MS. I realize we will not agree on Houston Nutt probably, but what is the consensus around there about him? I saw how recruiting is going...Ole Miss 58th?!? That was a huge knock on him at Arkansas. Nutt shouldn't have been fired. However he recruited there, he won. A lot. If he weren't really recruiting all that well and was struggling to win each year, fine. But he was winning at a high level (10 wins his final season at Arkansas).

Compare that to Miss. St's reluctance to fire Croom after he went 21-38 over that same time span (and 8 of those 21 wins came in one year!). Two of the coaches fired this offseason, Phil Fulmer and Tommy Tuberville, had a combined career record of 237-92. They had also coached at their respective school for a combined 27 years. A lot of history fired this offseason. And in a matter of 380 days three national championship winning coaches with long tenures were let go. Lloyd Carr. When did Tuberville win one? He got robbed of a deserved chance in 2004, but I don't remember him winning another. Good point on Lloyd Carr, though.

  11. I was trying to remember if you were a Charger fan. Obviously I knew you were an Eagle fan, but couldn't remember if you cheered for SD too. I don't hate Norv Turner (as long as he stays far, far away from the Titans and Vols - except as an offensive coordinator), but I find it hilariously awesome that he replaced any coach at all - much less one as great as Marty Schottenheimer.
  12. it probably depends on who they bring in to replace him, but i don't think tuberville will be out of a job for long. I don't think there's a coach available who's better than Tuberville. And I'm a big Mike Leach fan. Tuberville is vastly underrated.
  13. The classic matchup of futility: Norv Turner's coaching vs the Oakland Raiders Whose attempts to lose the game will fail?
  14. Ugh. Kiffin better have something up his sleeve or we'll have the Crompton/Stephens/Coleman circus again next year - and thus, another poor season. I know you like Coleman a lot (and I do too), but he's a much bigger question mark than Boyd is. As happy as I was to hear that Eric Gordon and Marlon Brown were "very impressed" by Kiffin, I'm almost equally disheartened by this news.
  15. I figured either the Cowboys or the Raiders would jump all over him. With both Dallas and Philly likely interested in him, though, would the Giants release him? Or would they try to trade him?
  16. It'd be a fun bidding war. Urban might end up in the $6-7 mil range.
  17. If ND were to top Saban's 4 million dollar deal, I think Urban might bite at it. He does consider head coach at Notre Dame as his dream job, after all. That said, it would be a dumb move for him to make and I think it'd take a massive offer from ND for him to even consider it. And even then it's unlikely.
  18. and after reviewing how much it would cost to buy out weis' contract, i'm guessing. It wouldn't shock me if that played a big part. I was hoping they'd fire Weis just so that they'd tempt Urban Meyer with mega money.
  19. And, much to Andy's shagrin, Notre Dame is retaining Charlie Weis for another season.
  20. Mike Leach has interviewed for the Washington job. Is it a better job than Texas Tech right now? I'd say probably since there's really nothing in the Pac-10 except for USC. But, he'd have to build the Huskies from absolute crap, whereas he's got a pretty good team in Lubbock right now.
  21. I don't know. The NCAA rarely makes sense or explains the decisions they make. I know Fulmer was pretty pissed off when Cottam was denied, but I don't think he ever really got a good reason why they denied him.
  22. Penn State's Sean Lee got a medical redshirt for this season (and he's a senior). Do you have to apply for it prior to your senior season? pretty sure meph is wrong (gasp!) No, He's not eligible for one because he was non-medically redshirted in 2004 by the Zooker. Had that one been a medical redshirt as well, he would have been eligible to petition the NCAA for a sixth year. Lee's medical redshirt was just an old-fashioned redshirt. There really is not such thing as a medical redshirt. You can petition the NCAA for extra ones, provided they're all medical related. ok so i guess what you are arguing is semantics. technically it would not be a redshirt, but he could petition the ncaa to be able to play ncaa football again next year, and he'd probably win (if he didn't play in the SEC championship game or the bowl game). Tennessee's Brad Cottam had a similar situation to Ingram last year. He got hurt early in the year (before the first game, I think) and wasn't going to be able to play until the Vandy game or later. He applied for the medical redshirt, but the NCAA denied him. Thus he rushed back as quickly as he could so he could play some his senior year. His and Ingram's situations are fairly similar, so I think Meph's right here.
  23. I like Mark Schlereth pretty well. I actually love Mark Schlereth...but he's not even on that much anymore. I think he's like a full time character on that Soap Opera that they always talk about on Mike and Mike The only time I see him is off and on with Mike and Mike or on NFL Live occassionally. I do think he's a regular on the soap, though I can't confirm it since I don't watch them. Me either I just know whenever hes on Mike and Mike they play his song "Rock Hoover" and that they talk about it once and a while He was on Mike and Mike again talking to Ronnie Lott Yeah I noticed him on there, but didn't pay much attention as I was getting ready for work.
  24. Didn't see this posted, but Plaxico is done for the season. The Giants placed him on the non-football injury list and suspended him for four games for "conduct detrimental to the team." I wouldn't be shocked to see him playing for another team next year - if he can avoid prison. Not good stuff for the Giants.
  25. Here ya go Meph. You may have heard this already, but I found a slight update on Cameron Newton.
