The countdown is on for Chris Johnson: As of right now, CJ needs 125 yards per game over the next four games to reach 2,000. He's currently at 1,509, so he needs 491 against the Rams, Dolphins, Chargers and Seahawks. To this point this year, he's averaged 125 yards per game. As for the game, if Vince continues what he's been doing and CJ can hit at least 125, we should win comfortably. It'll help if Boller starts instead of Bulger.

This seems similar to 2006 (I think) when we needed something like five different things to happen in week 17 for us to make the playoffs. All of them happened, except one - we lost to the Pats that week. This seems very similar to that playoff scenario.

With Pittsburgh and Baltimore struggling as they have, pretty much the only team that could be tricky to catch is Jacksonville. Denver, they probably won't catch. Problem is, there are only the 2 wild card spots and Jax and Denver currently have those locked up. Both are very likely to finish better than 9-7 at this point. We'd have been far more likely to tie with one of them at 10-6. It's possible, though very unlikely.

Good game by the Colts yesterday. The Titans got a good game out of CJ, but he wasn't able to break a long run, forcing the Titan defense to work the ball down the field every time. That led to two interceptions, a field goal instead of a TD and two drives with failed two-point conversions (I agreed with going for both). You can't have that happen and expect to beat a Peyton Manning-led team. Nonetheless, Vince had another solid game and made some very nice passes. He had Nate Washington deep down the left sideline on one pass and it was a perfect throw, but Nate dropped it. That would've been a long TD probably. We're not eliminated from the playoffs quite yet, but 9-7 isn't very likely at all to have a chance at the playoffs barring crazy luck. They were a longshot anyway and maybe the strong showing in the second half of the year will help some of the young guys (Vince, Britt, Nate, etc) next year.

the coach has to work his ass off, but I think it trickles down to the assistants. If Kelly is hired, it would be great if he could blend a staff of great fundamentals coaches with great recruiters. ND has a couple on board, including 1 that is both. We'll see what happens. Yeah, part of recruiting successfully nationally is having a great staff. That's what I like about Kiffin at UT, not only is he personally doing a good job, but more importantly he identified excellent coaches (both in recruiting and developing) and he brought them in. That's a major key in building a program that must recruit nationally.

I see Notre Dame's upside sort of like Tennessee's. They have the tradition and prestige (moreso than Tennesse, though) to compete on a national level for recruits. And they have to because they don't have enough in-state recruits to contend nationally with only them - like Florida, USC, Ohio State, etc. can. Because they have the potential to recruit nationally, they can be contenders for a BCS berth or a BCS title. But, they have to have a coach who excels at recruiting nationally. That was what Tennessee had to do when it fired Fulmer - find another coach who can recruit nationally for players. If ND gets that coach who can also develop players, they'll climb back into national prominence. Finding that coach is easier said than done, though.

The offense would have to be good enough to put Blanco in at SS, I think. Unless you want to rush Castro, and I'd prefer not to. If the cubs acquire Granderson by letting go of Marmol and Theriot, i'm all for it, even if it rushes Castro because i think Castro would still develop with the big league club under Jaramillo. The key would be not hurting his confidence. If he comes up and puts up a .220/.230/.385 line this year, how does he handle that? I don't know, but I'd prefer to take it slowly with a promising player as young as he is. I think he'll handle it just fine. He's only 19 yrs old and reading some of the spanish articles and english articles on him, he seems to have a lot of self confidence. If he was a player that was passive and kept referring back to the organization when asked about his developed then i would agree with you but from all the quotes i read, he expects to be in the big leagues this year and is confident in his skills. I don't know that it would hurt his psyche at all or that he would even struggle if he came up. I just think it'd be rushing him for little reward – he's unlikely to be particularly good this season and then, as Neuby mentioned, you start his arby clock earlier.

I'd prefer that if we traded Theriot, not because I don't have confidence in Castro, but just because I prefer being extra cautious with players as promising as he is.

And Oklahoma was garbage for a while before Stoops got there. Miami and Florida were both pretty nondescript for a while there - hell, Miami still kind of is, though they appear on the way back up. It's not hard to figure out the common denominator. The ability to get any athlete they want. Are you privy to some sort of information that suggests these teams couldn't get any athlete they wanted during the Blake era at OU, the Stallings era at Bama, the Coker era at Miami or the Zooker era at Florida? Bama was successful during the Stallings era, but not so much in between him and Saban. That was Dubose, Franchione and Shula.

For God's sake, quit trolling. you're the one that made the comparison, andrew, not me. I also put Bama in there, who is considered a huge brand in college football, but you ignored that and went for the one that would rile people up. Like I should've been surprised. Bama is about to win a national title and they went to a BCS game last year, no comparison to ND Bama's been decent to terrible since at least the Gene Stallings era.

Georgia's probably as high as 3rd or 4th since 2002. In that time period you can drop UT and Alabama below the Bulldogs. Well how far are we gonna go back?? I think we should go back to '59-'60 when Ole Miss won back to back national titles. I went to the 90s because he brought up Herschel Walker. If you want to compile back further than that, be my guest. :)

ND fans are quite delusional if you and GR are representative samples, and I think you are. However, if they get Kelly they will be getting a very good coach. He's a pretty good defensive guy, the trick is getting the kids. I think you and the rest of the ND fans will be happy with him. I don't think ND will every be considered a top program on a consistent basis ever again unless they join a conference. We all know how the Domers feel about that. Pride. WE ARE ND! Having strong Ohio ties can only help Kelly recruit.

Last two years: Georgia - 17 wins Ole Miss - 17 wins Auburn - 12 wins Tennessee - 12 wins He mentioned Herschel Walker so with that I was thinking back as far as the 90s or so. I just made a post mentining Georgia is probably higher than that if you only look at 2002 and onward. If you look at the past couple of years, Tennessee's probably 6th or 7th along with Auburn.

From everything I heard the Cubs have no interest in him. They don't like his defense at 2b I guess. I wish they did have interest.

I agree that the key is getting a good football coach, that's what I originally said. That coach has to be given the time, though. That's not a comment that the recent guys weren't given enough time at ND, just that programs with high expectations (like ND and others like UT, OU, etc) tend to get a bit impatient. Even a good coach might take a couple to three years to get his players in and start having success.

Weis was pulling in good talent throughout at least some of his tenure, but they weren't developing it seems. If they make a good hire – it doesn't have to be a big name, just a good football coach – then they can be good again. The key is to give the coach time to make it work.

Notre Dame is 221-124 in that span. It would take a while to get the others on that list, but I'd bet you anything that at least a couple of them have been worse. What kills me is that people think ND can't win anymore, but everyone agrees that Faust, Davie, Willingham and Weis (who have coached 18 of the last 29 seasons of ND football) were [expletive] football coaches. So which is it? Tennessee was 259-102 since 1980.

For some reason I keep wanting to put two Ss in Clausen's name and I have no idea why. I should know better, since both Casey and Rick went to UT.
