  1. This will be a good barometer for whether the Titans can compete in the playoffs (should they get there). If they've improved enough to defend against Rivers, they can win a game or two in the playoffs potentially. If the Chargers handle them like the Colts did three weeks ago, we'll likely not win a game if we make the playoffs.
  2. I love the timing of this San Diego/Tennessee game tomorrow night. With the game being played before any others, I'll know before Sunday whether the rest of the games are important to the Titans' playoff chances or not. As for the game itself, it's going to take a great game by Tennessee to win. San Diego has solid talent and is playing at its full capability right now. The question is there whether or not the Chargers will be playing at their best since they're all but assured the #2 seed. I expect they will and, with Bulluck out for the year, that'll make it tough for the Titans to win. Finnegan/Harper/Hood will have to play very well against Floyd, Jackson and Gates and the D-line will likely have to slow down LT and Sproles without blitz help. It's a winnable game, but we'll have to play very well.
  3. Stafford is going to have "minor" knee surgery and will be out for the season.
  4. I wouldn't want either contract. However, at 3/30, Lowe might produce at the level of that contract in, at least, one of the years. At 2/14, Silva almost certainly won't produce at or near the expected level of production for his contract. Like I said, I don't want either contract, but if I had to choose, it'd probably be Lowe's. But those aren't your choices. Swapping Silva's contract for Lowe essentially means you paid Silva his full contract, and then went and signed Lowe to a 3/30 deal. That's bad. The comment I originally referred to was Truffle saying he'd have taken Lowe for Bradley in a heartbeat. Dextermorgan then said he would prefer Silva's contract to Lowe's. So the debate - I guess - is which would you prefer - trade Bradley for Lowe and his contract, or do the deal Hendry did.
  5. I would be more in favor of Calero than Ohman or Mahay. I'd love to pick up Arredondo on a one-year w/an option type contract.
  6. Fixed it for you. Ouch. To be fair, he wasn't that bad most of last year.
  7. Tim did bring up Theriot's comments as a part of his argument as to why he no longer likes Theriot. I was just noting that other than the previously shown quote (plus, perhaps, a couple other innocuous ones), I don't remember the quotes he referred to. There could be, but it's not very likely. Teams will likely see the exact same thing in Theriot that people who want him shopped see – that once his contract increases, his value decreases. The likelihood is that there won't be very many teams willing to give much for him, but one or two might be willing to overpay. I agree with the sentiment that it's probably better to wait until the deadline and see if we're in or out of the race. If we're in it, might as well keep Theriot and take advantage of the slight value he has over guys like Barney and Blanco. If we're out of it, see if we can get a contender to overpay for a guy who can be helpful down the stretch.
  8. This is not scientific at all, but it's still interesting: Theriot career OPS: .725 Eckstein career OPS: .706

  10. Jake Delhomme is out for the season.
  11. I hate Theriot, but I'm beginning to doubt the vileness of these quotes. If he was really out of line, they'd be all over this board by now. I did a quick Google search and skimmed a couple of Bradley-related threads from when he was suspended. This is all I came up with as far as Theriot comments: I know there was more - I remember reading an article where he commented a bit more - but I don't recall him trashing Bradley or anything like that. I could very well be remembering wrong or have never heard the comments before, though.
  12. This morning on Mike and Mike, Olney was on and said that the Braves were trying hard for a while now to dump Derek Lowe's contract. Nobody would bite, though, so they shipped out Vazquez instead. i would have taken derek lowe for milton bradley in a heartbeat. Over Silva, yeah. But I don't like that contract at all. lowe is making 15 mil for the next 3 seasons. i'd much rather have silva. Lowe would be useful for those three years, while both are significantly overpaid relative to their production. It's also far more likely you'll get a productive year out of Lowe than Silva. I can fully understand preferring Silva and it's no slam dunk for me that I'd want Lowe.

  14. That's about how the Heisman voting should have gone.
  15. Good point. Lack of range is still not as significant at second. Theriot wouldn't all of a sudden become a great asset if he was moved to second, but he'd be more of an asset than he is at SS.
  16. As a team that is aggressively pushing the defense first mentality, I can't see that happening. Whether he's bad, weak, average or above average, it's safe to say he's not good. If they're looking to trade Jose Lopez, they could acquire Theriot and move him to second - where he'd be pretty good defensively. In theory he'd be better, but he hasn't played much 2nd for years, still has no range and the arm would be an issue when turning double plays. I'd prefer to move him there yesterday, but there's no gaurantee he'd be a plus defender there. Plus defender? Maybe not, but certainly by no means a liability (which I'm not certain he is at SS now). The arm would only come into play on the tough DPs and when trying to double up fast runners. You need far less range to play 2nd than SS, so I don't think lack of range would be much of an issue at all for him at second.
  17. I believe they ended up in the hands of Liberty Media after all the Time Warner, TBS, Ted Turner fallout and whatnot. Unlike Turner Media, or even Tribune, Liberty Media can't have much if any reason to give a crap about the results of the Atlanta Braves. Yeah, they've been in the process of dicing payroll for a couple of years or so. Wren should probably take them into a bit of a rebuilding process, but his current goal appears to be mediocrity until they increase payroll again. They've done that a couple times this decade I believe. Very difficult to have a longterm plan with such up and down payroll movement. Hendry complains about not being able to add much, imagine what he'd do if he actually had to cut payroll. With outliers of 2003 and 2008, they've been right in the $86-90 million range. I was surprised to see 2008 at $102-million, though, and with Cot's saying 2009 payroll was at $96 million, maybe they're starting to raise it again. Their payroll has been odd for a few years now, though.

  19. This morning on Mike and Mike, Olney was on and said that the Braves were trying hard for a while now to dump Derek Lowe's contract. Nobody would bite, though, so they shipped out Vazquez instead. According to Olney, they have a big bat in mind with the money they saved.

  21. As long as he's cheap, Theriot is fine to me. He's not a great hitter by any means, but as a cheap, bottom of the order hitter, he's ok. That said, if a deal comes around where we can better ourselves by trading Theriot, we should do it. The problem people have with Theriot offensively is that while his OBP is decent (career .356, .343 last year), it's normally not enough to make up for a complete lack of any real power (he hasn't slugged over .400 since 2006). Like grassbass said, if he can replicate the .387 OBP he put up in 2008, he's quite valuable at the top of the order. Otherwise, he's simply an ok player that should be in the lower part of the order.
  22. I tend to use UZR as a guide. It's a nice number to use to either back up a generally accepted position (Cameron's defense, for instance) or to, perhaps, raise a question with a popular idea (that Theriot's defense sucks). It's not the be-all, end-all to me of defensive ratings, but it's a useful guide that, mixed with first-hand observations and whatever else we can look at, gives us a better picture than we had previously. Personally, I don't think Theriot's defense is as bad as many on here make it out to be. He's certainly not stellar, but it's not a weight on his offensive numbers either.
  23. Keith Bulluck is out for the year with a torn ACL. I wasn't sure the Titans would against the Chargers before this and now there's little chance. Bulluck is still the second best player on the defense (behind Finnegan) and with Thornton banged up as well, we have no real backup. Bulluck is and has been for a long time one of the most underrated linebackers in the game.
  24. He's all over it, but not in a confirming sort of way.
  25. for the team it's about winning the world series. ultimately, a gm can't control what his team does in the playoffs. all he does is build a team and then hope they perform when it matters. if the 2008 cubs had shown up for the playoffs and won the world series, would that have meant jim hendry had built a better team? no, it still would have been the same team he built. let me ask you something. who deserves more credit- walt jocketty for building the 2006 cards (won 83 games, but also the world series) jim hendry for building the 2008 cubs (97 wins, swept in the first round) ? Which season would you rather take as a fan? That's not his point Exactly. As a fan I'd take the World Series title any day, but the 2008 Cubs were simply a better constructed team that didn't show up in the playoffs.
