  1. Defense aside, would you take Nady over Dye based on hitting alone? I wouldn't even if Nady was healthy, let alone coming off a second TJS surgery. Now I realize Dye is horrible defensively, but I hold firm to the position that you sign bench players for their bats, not their gloves. The only time this is not the case is when you're talking about backup catchers or defensive specialists like Blanco or Fuld. Nady is neither. With an injury prone guy like Soriano in left and older players in center and right, having a guy on the bench who isn't a liability in the field is important, though. With the signing of Nady, if Soriano gets hurt for a month, we won't have to rely on only Fuld to replace him. If we had signed Dye, then we would have had the choice of starting Fuld every day or starting a DH in left every day. Nady is the superior option for this team.
  2. If you force the 12-play drive, though, you have 12 opportunities to force a turnover. If you give up a 1-play, 80-yard TD, there's no chance for a turnover. That's the whole idea behind playing a Cover 2 style defense - give up the underneath yardage, but don't give up the big play. Let them get their yards and shoot for either a turnover or hold them to a field goal.
  3. sneakypower (or any other Lion fan out there), What are the general impressions of Joe Barry? He's currently the LB coach at Tampa, but was also the DC in Detroit recently (apparently). He appears to be the leading candidate for DC for the Vols and I'm curious of what people think of him.
  4. I'll be really interested to see the mental battle between Peyton and Gregg Williams. Williams is a fantastic game-planner defensively and is a master at blitzing – even moreso than Rex Ryan. That said, there have been few defenses Peyton hasn't been able to figure out by halftime. I'll be interested to see if Williams can keep things mixed up enough defensively to keep Peyton from figuring out what he's doing. I think the the answer to that will go a long way to determining who wins the game.
  5. Yeah, pretty sure it was Randle El to Hines Ward.
  6. Half a run is somewhat significant and two of our potential starters have been half a run better than Harden's first half. Gorzo's been inconsistent, but if he can give us anything close to 2006 or 2007 numbers, he'll be far more productive than Harden's first half. Also, Rothschild has said that Shark's secondary pitches are finally coming around. If that's the case, I'll be very interested to see how he does. I'm not betting on him being significantly better, but I tend to trust Larry when he says he's noticed something with one of our pitchers.
  7. Good point, I think most of us remember the dominant Harden and forget that he had been regressing. Harden put up a line of 4-3, 2.55 ERA, 12 GS , 67 IP, 1.119 WHIP, 11.8 SO/9 in the second half last year. We don't have anyone on the roster that is going to replace Harden (Gorzo, Silva, Samardzija, Marshall) that is capable of pitching that well over the course of a half a season On the flipside, Harden had a 5.47 ERA with a 1.541 WHIP and a 10.1 K/9 in the first half (seven more innings too). Most any of our starters can better those numbers significantly.
  8. McNeill is an interesting hire. I was hoping for Dave Clawson as I think he can do a good job as a HC, but it's nice to see McNeill get a head coaching job as well.
  9. I heard Sal Sunseri's name pop up again for the DC job at Tennessee. I'd like that move, couple with making Lance Thompson the recruiting coordinator and bringing in Stacy Searles. That last part is probably a pipe dream, though.
  10. Shula should have started at a school like ECU and not at his alma mater like Bama. The biggest problems I had with Shula was that he encourages cliques, he placate to star players (ie DJ Hall  ), and he geniunely seems to be disinterested in establishing discipline. He might work at a school like ECU. It won't be Shula.
  11. Vince is going to the Pro Bowl again. Odd, but cool.
  12. Mike Shula to ECU?
  13. I've wondered that myself. If Sheets is demanding $10 million for one year and Bedard is willing to take less, I'd be more for Bedard myself. I've heard very little to nothing about Bedard this offseason. Who are his potential suitors and what kind of a contract is he looking for? I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure he won't be able to pitch until about half way through the season. I didn't know that. It would explain the complete lack of interest in his direction. My thinking with Bedard was that while every other team was drooling over Sheets, we could possibly swoop in on Bedard before his price shot up. Even still, if there's a relatively good chance he'll pitch this year, I'd be interested in a low-base 1st year and club option (vesting based on health, perhaps) for a 2nd. Could be a better deal than what Sheets may get.

  15. I know that Chizik took at least 500k less than what Auburn was willing to pay him so he could put that money towards hiring assistants. Most of his assistants are above average recruiters evidently. I know Trooper Taylor is a pretty valued recruiter, and I believe that was the case when he was at UT also. Eric Mack committed to Auburn this morning, btw. That puts them at 22 or 23 for the 2010 class...Now they are shifting their attention towards signing a couple of 4* defensive tackles...and obviously another RB if Lattimore wants to come to Auburn. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/01/20/eric-mack-auburn-switch-p_n_430042.html Trooper's a fantastic recruiter and a very good coach as well. I'd love to have him back at UT.
  16. Al Davis is currently bringing in Jim Fassell, Marc Trestman and Hue Jackson to interview for a head coaching job that is currently filled by Tom Cable. Weird.
  17. That's fine if you disagree, just realize you are wrong. I haven't seen anything to make me think it's the case.
  18. That definitely interests me. I'd prefer Steele, but Sunseri is another Saban disciple.
  19. Stockstill's a really good coach. He should get a major job before too long if he can keep up what he's building at MTSU. Also, former UT OC Dave Clawson has been rumored for the ECU opening now. He did really well as the head man at Bowling Green this year. Another rumored candidate is the current head coach at Liberty (I forget his name). Danny Rocco is the name. I know nothing of him, but that seems like a huge jump down in levels going from Stockstill/Clawson to Liberty.
  20. Not over yet. He may stay. But don't count anything out in this odd coaching search. I heard he decided to stay. Hopefully he decides to come here. If not Steele, who are we looking at? If we're looking at Saban disciples, then I'd guess we'd take a run at Susnari or Smart (yeah right). Otherwise, do we have a chance/interest in Rodney Garner? Unless I am mistaken, there is no proof that Steele has said anything yet. There are reports, but nothing quoting Steele either way. May not mean anyting, but I'll wait until I hear Steele saying one way or another what he's going to do before I worry too much. There is a chance that Garner ends up at UT, but I don't think it's as the DC. The same high school coach who was telling me about Smart to UGA is telling me that he believes Garner to UT is all but done. TIFWIW. I think it's Lance Thompson's job to lose if Steele turns it down. Garner would be terrific whether or not we get Steele. Not sure we'll have room for him with Steele, though. And I'd be fine with Thompson as DC. Steele would probably be a better option simply because he has previous experience as a DC and that he'd add yet another terrific coach to the staff, but I think Thompson is well qualified to be a DC.

  23. Steele stays at Clemson. Crap.
  24. Haven't seen him in quite a while. He's a Steeler fan and I'm thinking we have a Jaguar fan as well, but not sure on that.
