  1. I know the level of Tennessee basketball hate on here is very, very high, but beating Villanova 78-68 was huge today. Great, very unexpected win today.
  2. http://www.mlive.com/spartans/index.ssf/2010/11/michigan_state_chaminade_tied.html Silverswords is a really cool nickname.
  3. Boise president Bob Kustra on Gordon Gee:
  4. Ah, didn't realize they couldn't ban him from the training facilities. It makes sense, but it never occurred to me. I read it in an ESPN article yesterday. It mentioned that the main difference between Young's situation and McNair's is that since McNair wasn't under contract he didn't have a right to use the facilities, but since Young is under contract he does have that right. That's probably part of the CBA. Interesting. I knew they kept McNair out because he didn't have a contract, but didn't realize they had to let Vince in because he did.
  5. So you don't feel a pitching coach has any real impact on a pitching staff at all at the major league level? I completely disagree if that's the case. Their impact is determined by the makeup of the staff (as in youth vs age, etc), but they can have an impact. You don't think Rothschild had any impact on Silva posting his best xFIP since 2002 after being awful last year and mediocre for three years before that?

  7. He can, it's just up to the manager to let him. That doesn't make it less important to have a good pitching coach, though, it makes it more important to have a sensible manager. No, he can't. If it's up to somebody else, he's not in control. So pitching coaches aren't that important because they don't automatically have final say on when a pitcher leaves the game, even if the manager can give them that ability? There's plenty of other responsibilities that make a pitching coach important over when to take a pitcher out.
  8. Vince apparently sent a text to Fisher sometime in the past couple of days.

  10. That's probably accurate – maybe not the handily part, but I think both would beat OSU this year.
  11. We screwed the pooch with Wood and Prior because Dusty overrode Larry. There have been reports, I believe, that Larry wanted to use both less but Dusty wouldn't listen. That's supported by the much more manageable workloads the pitchers have been under since Dusty left and Lou gave Rothschild more control over that stuff. I wouldn't build my offseason around a Larry Rothschild or a Rudy Jaramillo or pretty much any pitching or hitting coach, but I'd pay well to have a Rothschild or Jaramillo on my staff. And Larry hasn't turned crap into gold all the time, but he's done well with guys like Silva, Wells, Marmol, Lilly, Marquis and others. Some of it is talent, but a top end hitting or pitching coach can get the most out of a player.
  12. Both are important. Obviously, if you have a team like the Yankees with all-star veterans all over the place, pitching and hitting coaches are less important. But for a team that puts young, talented players out there, it's important to have good coaches to continue to teach and develop the young players. Pitching/hitting coaches can't work miracles, but they are still important for a lot of teams.
  13. Yeah, just saw that this morning. They apparently are letting him into the facility to rehab and work out (which they didn't let McNair do since he wasn't under contract), but won't let him into team meetings – or at least that one since they were specifically discussing Vince. Either way, it's a mess.
  14. My dream is for NFL Sunday ticket to offer each broadcast with the radio announcers call rather than the network sound. I realize that will never happen for a number of reasons, but it'd be great to have local announcers to listen to. That'd be awesome.
  15. If you consider Sagarin highly, he has Texas A&M as a top 15 team. South Carolina is also #16 according to Sagarin. Those may not be signature wins, but they're definitely significant wins. For what it's worth, Florida is also a top 25 team according to Sagarin. I'm not arguing the SEC West is dominant or anything, I've already said the conference as a whole is down this year. However, they do have wins of note this year.
  16. Just for the heck of posting it, in case anybody cares.
  17. I didn't even know Vince Young was married. Earlier than that.
  18. I could see the possibility of one. He'll have his pick of major college jobs as well, though, so he could go to a Michigan or somewhere and be in a plum position to win one or more.
  19. If his goal is to coach in the NFL, then yeah at some point he'll have to settle a bit. If he wins a couple BCS titles, though, I don't think he'll have to settle too much. If he's happy staying in college indefinitely, however, and has a lot of success, he might eventually get the situation he wants. I'll agree waiting until after the CBA mess passes would be the right call.
  20. Raisin's point is, if a job Harbaugh wants isn't there, he'll just stay at Stanford until he finds the right situation. He'll be in demand nearly at the Nick Saban level for colleges, I'd say.
  21. Sounds a little bit like the Steve McNair treatment.
  22. I'd be really interested in him if Fisher decides to leave Bud and Vince to each other. I wouldn't hate Gruden either since he's taken a liking to spread offenses and I think that may help Vince get back on track (since it appears he's here to stay).
  23. Yeah, most coaches want control of roster moves and that's one of the biggest things Jerry doesn't want to give up. That's part of why I think Fisher might balk at going to Dallas should he leave Nashville, he wants a very significant say in roster moves and the direction the franchise builds and Jerry probably won't want to give him that kind of power.
  24. This is becoming more likely. Bud Adams has said that Vince isn't going anywhere. That probably means we're looking for a new head coach after the year.
  25. Picked up Cleveland's defense in this league and put in a waiver claim in my three other leagues. Carolina better not figure out how to play offense all of a sudden.
