    It probably wasn't ever brought up before, but I think Arizona would be a good trade partner for Kerry Wood. Think we could get a good prospect for him? That is, if he waives his NTC. Where are we seeing that Wood has a NTC? Cot's doesn't list one.

    Yeah, it's probably irrelevant whether or not Wood has a NTC since I can't imagine Hendry (or really most any GM) trading him after the mega discount he gave us in the offseason. I'm pretty sure he's here to stay and that's not really that bad a thing - a veteran reliever probably doesn't net us all that much anyway. Stunned is too tame a word for the surprise I'd feel if Wood was traded. It seems pretty implicit that he came back to finish his career and that a future trade isn't even a consideration And even if Wood degrades into a mop up guy I wouldn't mind having him around. If he and his $1.5 mil contract is the worst deal we have in the bullpen, we'll be doing pretty well. Even if he does degrade into a mop-up guy, he won't be making enough to really matter that much - as long as we don't have a bunch of other guys being overpaid.

    I have no idea why he'd be so loyal to Hendry, but that's what the reports have been saying. From Bruce's article to numerous others prior to it, Bush/Fleita/Wilken are Hendry loyalists and would leave if he's fired. And I agreed with the rest of your post in mine. Keeping or firing Hendry shouldn't be based on Wilken.

    From the looks of it, he was working off one comment from one anonymous source and extrapolated that to the idea that the Cubs will be in full-scale youth movement for at least 2-3 years. I'm having a lot of trouble buying that without a little more to back it up.

    If Wilken decides to leave upon Hendry's firing because of loyalty, he may not simply decide to stay because you offer him more money. However, whatever your opinion of Wilken/Fleita/Bush, they shouldn't be the only reason you keep Hendry around. If, in theory, it were a close decision they could be the tipping point to keep him if you like him, but if the Ricketts are convinced Hendry should go, they shouldn't change their mind simply to keep any of those three.

And 5 others. He's third (behind Halladay and Hamels) if you sort by xFIP. He is seventh sorting by WAR, however, which is the way TT's link was sorted.

    Byrd can hit cleanup, but Pena is the better option. As keener pointed out, he had a bad month to open the year and then he went on a tear through most of May. His line over the past 28 days - .263/.406/.487/.893 - has picked his numbers up considerably from the awful start. At the time my post was made, Pena's season wOBA was higher than Byrd's. It's dropped since then to a .339 (Byrd) vs .325 (Pena) difference, but you have to question how well Byrd will bat when he returns from his injury.

    Soriano, Z, Aramis and Shark have NTCs. Z and Aramis also have 10/5 rights, negating the NTC, and Soriano is basically untradeable even without the NTC. Shark is probably worth more as a decent middle reliever than traded away for a raw A-ball pitcher since we'd be paying his salary either way. Only four players out of 25 have NTCs and our most tradeable assets - Byrd, Kosuke, Soto, Pena - don't have NTCs.

    Kosuke would have to be intent on staying for it to work. If we trade Byrd (very realistic if he bounces back from his injury) and Kosuke will take a 1/5-7 deal like XZero suggested, it's a very possible scenario. Whether Kosuke would be happy with that small a deal, however, is another issue.

    Yeah, any Kosuke contract would have to keep from interfering with Jackson's playing time in Chicago and a pursuit of Kemp. If we can do those two things, though, a .360-.400 OBP would look really nice staying at the top of the order.

    I'd have some level of interest in bringing him back if we trade Byrd in the offseason and Kosuke comes cheap. My hope is that Brett Jackson will be up and ready to start at the beginning of the 2012 season (if not before) and I wouldn't want to delay Jackson to keep Fuku. However, if we can get a decent little package for Byrd, then I'd be pretty happy with a Soriano/Jackson/Fukudome outfield for a year or two. I think Matt Kemp is a free agent after the 2012 season, however, so a Kosuke contract couldn't be prohibitive enough to keep us from pursuing Kemp.

    I actually wouldn't be interested in trading Dempster or Z unless we got a really good deal for them. Both are still productive pitchers (unless Demp reverts back to his opening few starts) and can help us win next season and don't have long enough contracts to be albatrosses. I think all of Kosuke, Pena and Byrd (if healthy) are tradeable, the return we'd get is questionable, however. I do agree with Northside Blues that we could be looking at pretty decent return if we're willing to pay most or all of the remainder of each of their contracts. Guys like Baker, Soto, Marshall, Marmol and Barney could also bring something in return, though whether it's worth trading those guys is highly debateable.

    Exactly my point. Most fans know Hendry has failed miserably and to hear Ricketts say: "Well, we are fine, just injured" is only going to infuriate fans who know the truth. That being that this team has gotten progressively worse since the end of 2008. Bad move after bad move. Injuries have nothing to do with it. And that should be dealt with behind the scenes and not in the media.

    Would fans become less apathetic if he exchanged one meaningless platitude with another? The fans, by and large, will not be happy with anything Ricketts says at this point - they want to see changes being made.

    And Soto. And Marmol. And anyone else likely to be a Cub for more than the next year or two. There are quite a few players on this team that I'm interested in following - Castro, Cashner, Garza, Soto, Marmol, Wells, Marshall, Barney, LeMahieu, Colvin, Baker, Shark, etc. All of those guys can potentially impact the team to some degree in future seasons and I'm interested to see how they do.
