    The analysis isn't going to change either, the accessibility of that data to each scout will change as Boston has a much more technologically superior database than the Cubs. If McLeod does handle some amateur scouting, then it will change as his opinion will at least (likely more) combat Wilken's opinion on possible amateurs. The only thing I can see improving is the Cubs use of video data and medical/psych testing which the Cubs have lacked. You can't really analyze an OFP report any differently.

    As critical as I was for not firing Hendry sooner, this has played out as well as it could. While I thought Friedman would be a better choice than Theo, this staff as a whole is better than Friedman. Wilken will play a significant role this year, he knows the current scouts better than anyone just introduced and will assume more of an adviser role. Fwiw, the area scouts I have met throughout the years with the Red Sox are no more or less "scouty" than any of the Cubs' scouts or any of the other 28 teams. If you're expecting the actual area scouts to analyze guys in a different way you're mistaken, they might turn in more reports as far as medical (although, most teams are turning in more reports) but most of the basic scouting is the same. How they handle pro coverage is very much the same as well. I am unaware of their statistical library, but I assume it is much more advanced than anything the Cubs have ever seen. I do think there will be less of drafting guys like Colvin and Simpson and I expect the entire developmental philosophy to change.

    YES, amen to that. i got really sick of watching hendry become infatuated with one type of player because the cubs didn't hit righthanded pitching in a 3 game series, or didn't steal enough bases, or made a few too many errors. or trying to mimic what some other team did to win a world series (especially if it's some team that's not even that good, like the 2005 sox) The scouting structure will interest me, the player development will interest me more. It will be nice to see prospects not over their heads b/c of a hot month and a new level.

    They've drafted some quality defensive linemen. Unless Carimi turns into something, they can't say the same thing on offense. They've had huge busts, like that freaking idiotic Dan Bazuin selection, but Harris was great, Johnson and Dusty were good but with side issues that kept them from living up to their abilities. And a few other guys have been decent enough. Harris was the only one. Dvorcek (sp?) was injury riddled and Johnson didn't pan out. Paea hasn't even dressed yet on a D-Line with no depth. They traded a 2nd rd. pick on a 1st rd. bust, that doesn't factor what happened.

    I still can't believe they can miss so badly on the offensive and defensive lines. They have been awful on both lines with the draft and FA, Peppers doesn't count given the price tag. Angelo should be fired, last year's smoke and mirrors shouldn't save him.

    That would go against the "make your next manager the opposite of your current manager" theory. I can't see Boston hiring the next Showalter just he's an ass. They don't subscribe to that flawed logic like the Cubs have in the past.

    I find the move to be interesting, he's supposed to be a very smart baseball guy and a good teammate. They need to go after Riggleman as their bench coach, although he's my darkhorse pick for Boston's managerial spot.

    As much as OBP and now defense as far as what Beane exploits, throughout the last 10 years, he still exploits the value of finesse pitchers yet nothing is mentioned of it.

    I liked Anthony Young, he showed that Himes was ahead of his time by not judging a pitcher by his record. Him and Jose Guzman, solid.

    Lee has a likely marginal bat with the potential to be the best def ss in the AL. I think he's more likely to hit at the btm than the top. Of course, TB is still trying to figure if Beckham is an everyday guy.

    The hire would be huge, he's the most visible GM in sports (minus J Jones). An interesting question would be, say they hire Epstein and Epstein hires Sandberg (unlikely) and they win 95 games next year, who gets more credit? I think with any other manager, Epstein gets due credit. Sandberg gets it if its him.

    In the past, I'd agree. I think a hiring like Epstein alone would be enough to get the fan base extremely excited. He'll get fans like us amped up because of the obvious reasons, and his success in Boston with the championships and the drought will get the casual fans excited. Disagree, I think the avg Cubs fan would assoc their winning towards Francona than Epstein. Hopefully, I'm underestimating Cubs fans.

    This is somehow a worse idea than WSR's. It was hyperbole, but I don't see any reasonable compensation getting in the way if that's what it takes.. Certainly depends on the definition of reasonable. It's not as if Epstein is the only upper echelon GM out there. True but despite the contract expiring, Freidman should stay in TB and then you're likely dealing with compensation in Oak and I don't see Cashman in that tier and don't see Gillick or Ryan becoming a GM again. Then, it becomes unproven and worst case a bad former or current GM.

    I'd give up the farm and Castro for Epstein. It won't take that but there's no more important position in baseball. I think Alomar will end up with the W Sox.

    As far as the D-line, at this point after 3 sacks in the last 3 weeks. Week 1 was more ATL's line than the pass rush.

    It'll be difficult to see them better than GB/Det, NYG/Phil, TB/ATL/NO. 3 of those teams will win their divisions and 2 more for WC. They have to go 2 of 3 vs Det, TB, and Phil while beating Minn to have a shot at the WC. While its not a must win, they'd have to win the next month to be in the picture.

    I don't think you can feel any better about this team after this performance. If they lost, the season would've likely been over at 1-3 with their upcoming schedule but if they go 1-3 over their next 4 which is a legit possibility, it's almost impossible for them to do it given how solid the NFC is.

    With Appel, I don't know how you don't draft him #1 overall. Scouts are questioning his ability to win. They think he might be similar to Morrow, where he has plus plus stuff but somehow manages to be .500. Personally, I'd take him one based on reports. Giolito is my fav prep player

    Its like any other spot on the roster, if they brought in Maddon, given his ability to handle a staff, situational matchup, and lack of veteran bias would likely bring more wins than a poor manager like Quade. But since it has no direct change in the outcome of a game and there isn't much of a difference between most managers in W-L, it gets overlooked. Catchers don't matter to me.

    Its pretty telling that Friedman picked Martinez for BC and has learned the use of stats within a game from Maddon and everything I've heard is liked by rookies and veterans. Like Maddon, I'm sure there will be times when you want to throw the remote thru the tv.
