  1. Sosa is def. the exception. Take someone like C. Patterson, it'll take something extroad. for him to avg. 60BBs per year. That's where I think the role of a hitting coach gets unfairly criticized for a player's inability to make sign. improvements compared to where that player's approach has already been conditioned at. If you want to see dramatic improvements in approach, you have rework the roster instead of hiring a new hitting coach. Of course, a change can be a positive but it can't turn an Econo Lodge into a Ritz Carlton.
  2. I think pitchers pitched differently to Sosa once he took off in '98 and moreso later on around 00' and 01'. He improved that off-season as far his approach, where he was laying off the slider low and away and getting into a hitters count and that's what helped him to have the great year. Then, pitchers pitched him different and his approach con't to improve in the later years. But, Sosa wasn't the case of an avg. aggressive hitter remaining an avg. aggressive hitter while spiking his BBs. You look at hitters like Jones, DeRosa, Izturis, Barrett or 38% of the starting line-up, you won't see them have spikes in BBs b/c pitchers won't adjust. This team will improve in BBs over last year b/c of Lee and Soriano over the platoon at 1B and Pierre last year not b/c of an improvement in approach. Their ceiling with BBs will likely be 560, while up 170 over '06 that would put them middle of the pack. Their jump will be slugging.
  3. Dusty had patient teams in SF even excluding Bonds from that equation. You're not going to have a dramatic improvement from someone unless something unusual happens where pitchers are afraid to get ahead in the count early by throwing strikes and nibble each pitch instead. Players will improve over time, but if you're an avg. hitter who is aggressive early on and you stay an avg. hitter throughout your career, you'll almost never take great strides in patience even with coaches preaching patience at every opportunity.
  4. Patience can't be taught, it can only be improved upon through time. Also, how pitchers pitch to you will determine whether or not you see more pitches taken.
  5. Carpenter looked very good today. He locates as well as any pitcher in the game with both his FB and curve, never hung a curve today. Also, showed the makings of a good change-up a couple of times. He threw one good slider as well.
  6. I didn't see the same velo and life as Beckett has on his FB. Beckett also has a 90 MPH change. Daisuke also a flashed a slider later on as well as 1 or 2 splitters. He threw more sliders later on, including a 86 mph slider to Dubois. I've made my way to watching Carpenter now.
  7. I just finished watching his last innings. He was flying open on the HR to Knott. On the 3 runs in the 4th, two very good pitches to Tejada and Hernandez, one was jam shot for a hit against Miggy and Hernandez hit a comebacker that Matsuzaka threw into CF that would usually be a DP. His FB looked flat at the end as well as his breaking ball and changeup (it's not a gyroball) were up. He has to close up his delivery more to get some more life on his FB, once he does that, he'll be fine. He'll be inconsistent at times as well as dominant.
  8. I've only watched the 1st two innings and he's been in control. He hung one changeup and one slider, but he hasn't been close to giving up a run.
  9. I just watched that 1st inning of Matsuzaka and that was amazing. He might be the best combo of FB, curve, and change from a RH'er since Pedro was in is prime.
  10. It'll be interesting, I don't know how loyal Tubby is to his staff, maybe making changes to his staff would help as far as recruiting w/out having to get rid of Tubby.
  11. Early draft lists at Perfect Game had him listed about 150th overall before the season started.
  12. It depends on who they would hire as well. At this point, he's a good enough coach to remain at UK, just not a good enough recruiter. He had the great class a couple of years ago (Morris, Crawford, Rondo) but if you do go the McD's route you have to do that every year as it becomes a 2 year title run. At this point, I'm all for a change.
  13. Right now, the main thing in the short-term between now and his next outing is how well does he feel tomorrow, work on his mechanics, and getting him stronger rather than focusing on a competition for the 5th spot.
  14. 10 days is an eternity, depending how the schedule plays out that could be 2 starts (+6 IP) or 1 start with a bunch of between throwing. Likewise w/Guzman.
  15. Poor mechanics combined with not throwing close to max effort can def. lead to a dramatic loss of velo. There are other factors possible as well, complete health and mentally getting over an injury.
  16. Yep, that's a whole lot of energy in a player smaller than most HS varsity players.
  17. http://swingtraining.net/Carlos/Lincecum/Lincecum-full-sidefront.gif This is better than both of them...
  18. Given the options, I believe Izturis has earned the starting role with his defense and the potential of supplying enough offense to remain a starter. With that said, if he struggles early with the bat, based on his career stats, his leash should be short and I hope that the Cubs would act accordingly. Of course, how 1-7 goes will also dictate how important it is to have a better bat there.
  19. I can't fault Coach Dee for doing that, the odds of getting a hit to knock in the run or an error/HBP/BB/Balk to advance the runners was less than the odds of getting the runner to 3rd w/less than 2 outs to try knock him in w/out having to get a hit.
  20. Almonte is a journeymen reliever (31 yo. I believe) pitched in the Indy Leagues last year. Amador is a 2B/CF, good speed, needs to improve his approach at the plate. Probably a poor man's version of Bynum.
  21. From what I gathered from my cable company, they weren't offering it up until this got settled. I called at the beginning of February and they told me to call back after Feb 15th. I called after Feb 15th and that's when they said that we would have to wait until everthing got settled. If you do order MLBTV and need help transferring it to your TV via the S-Cable, I'll give you the instructions. That would be awesome, because I'll probably need help. How long do they make S-Cables? Where my lap top is stationed is probably at least 15 feet from where the TV sits. Of course, I am still holding out hope that my cable company picks up MLB EI. I have a 50' RCA/S-Vid Cable i got off eBay for $30 for just that reason a few yrs ago. But now that I have a HDTV, I just picked up a HDMI-DVI cable to run from the PC to the TV. I'll probably do likewise as far as picking up a HDMI-DVI cable. Before I ordered the package, I wanted to see how I'd like it with the S-Cable. BBB, S-Cables of greater than 15 ft. are pretty common.
  22. That's a circle-change. I wouldn't put too much stock into it as far as whether or not he'd use it in the reg. season, I didn't see the pitch move, but unless it develops into an out pitch, I doubt Wood as a reliever would use it in game situations. I can't remember, but I thought he did that with the splitter as well a few years back.

  24. I still purchased premium MLB.TV, love the look on the TV, and can always use my laptop on the road.
  25. Walrond gets ahead in the count, leaves one in the zone and Bard crushes it off the CF wall, Pie just misses making the play. Brad doubles, no one out.
