  1. Others have, mainly on the fact he's a reliever and he's in the minors. That only diminishes the value of a farm system that line of thinking, look at how the Giants are doing if you want to see a constantly poor farm system. Expecting the Cubs to get outbid everyone on most of the top FAs is wishful and often incorrect thinking. The farm system has value and the Cubs will need more players to come from it to win a WS. Trying to establish a lack of value of prospects based on past flameouts shows a lack of knowledge of how important it can be when teams commit to building from within.
  2. I'm pretty indifferent about the trade, I just think it's moronic to say they gave up nothing based on the fact he's a minor league reliever. This narrow minded BS about the value of a minor league reliever is ironic given that he was the main piece of that trade they are defending. Hell, if you want to make Kendall seem more appealing it would be wise to state the positives about Blevins rather than the negatives. As far as Blevins, I see a pitcher that has made drastic changes in his delievery, regained 2 potential avg. to plus pitches and has the potential of the lefty out of then pen who has the ceiling of middle relief. As far as Kendall, I think he'll have a good chance hit .270/.340 be a good teammate and a potential leader while being a defensive liability. Whether that makes me sound like I'm for it or against it, hell use your judgement. It's a likely minimal trade in the long and short-term both in a positive and negative way, some like to make dramatics part of the discussion rather than facts.
  3. Kinda like Wellmeyer a few years ago. Or "can't miss" Juan Cruz. Or a whole host of other possibilities that are "something" in the minors but never amount to anything in the majors. Minor leaguers are almost always gonna be an unknown. Hopefully this works in the Cubs favor. But it's not like Blevins was one of the Cubs top prospects for crying out loud. He's had a very good first half in A and AA ball. Or Marshall, Hill, Zambrano, Marmol, etc. when they were in the farm system. Kendall is an unknown at this point, no one knows if he's going to turn it around, I'll repeat what I've said that Perry has worked with Kendall in the past and hopefully it is a somewhat easy correctable mechanical flaw rather than a slower bat. Sure, Blevins doesn't make everyone wet their pants in BA's handbook when he's not listed but he has good stuff and been productive, which gives him value espec. from the left side. If he maintains production throughout the year and stays healthy, he'll be in BA's handbook. I find it ironic that some say that the Cubs got Kendall for nothing, what does that say about Kendall's value?
  4. People need to look at who is being given up rather than the position. People would've called Marmol nothing a year ago if he was included in a trade. Young relievers have potential value espec. in an era of overspending and inconsistent FA relievers. Look at the LH'ers out of the pen this year... Eyre, Ohman, and Cotts. There's no guarantee he would provide production, which you can say for Kendall as well at this point,
  5. Well I tried to highlight a few of his stats on his career numbers and was more or less verbally stoned in here. So there are plenty of folks upset. I'm hoping Perry can correct him and the change of scenery line will help. Ironically, A's are probably saying low risk with this trade as well given how poorly he has done this year and the possibility of Suzuki getting the majority of starts behind the plate.
  6. except that he's 33 and hitting like total ass this year. Plus he has no power or speed left. He's only 33? Even better! I thought he was older. And I don't know that speed is really important - at all - for a catcher, but Jason is 2nd among catchers in SB's. Speed isn't important usually for a C but it was for him earlier, but his injuries have made him a non-running threat.
  7. Getting worse every year. So is mine...but what does "getting worse" mean...I assume he's still better than Barrett was... He doesn't have have the same pop time as before, hasn't been too good at blocking balls, just isn't prone to dumb mistakes like Barrett. I should also include he has a big pair, mentally tough, and a good teammate. If Perry can correct what has gone wrong and it isn't age, he can valuable. But as I said earlier he has gone from avg. to bad defensively.
  8. Getting worse every year. So is mine...but what does "getting worse" mean...I assume he's still better than Barrett was... He doesn't have have the same pop time as before, hasn't been too good at blocking balls, just isn't prone to dumb mistakes like Barrett.
  9. The avg. person in the bleachers is an idiot, no wonder why people think Cubs fans are idiots.
  10. The market is geared towards paying over face value, if scalpers are charging over face value, you're better off looking on the web with more security.
  11. No. Dihigo was certainly a better player overall. It's just possible to make the argument for Lofton being a better hitter because of the competition that Dihigo faced. dihigo was probably better. If you really want to broaden the horizon Alejandro Oms was probably better. Agreed, Dihigo had that crazy year in I believe '37 where hit over .330 and went 18-2 on the mound.
  12. Was that after the 1st inning? He hit 88-89 last year at Peoria and by the 4rd was down to 83-84.
  13. Martin Dihigo (HOF) Is that factoring him as a pitcher as well?
  14. 5 PM, you'll be fine.
  15. Where you coming from? If you're coming up from Louisville for the game, I'd give yourself plenty of time b/c of normal Chicago traffic and I know Indy has some construction but that is on I-74 I believe. If you're staying at nearby hotel, 90 minutes should be fine. Bleachers will be sold out regardless, CF and RF might be more crowded early on compared to LF.
  16. I seen a similar reaction from a player earlier this year who ended up tearing a tendon in his middle finger.
  17. Any advanced play by play data would be welcomed. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/15/sports/baseball/15score.html?_r=2&oref=slogin&oref=slogin This is promising.
  18. And you consider Loretta a viable everyday option at shortstop? Everyday? No. Platoon? Yes. With Derosa jumping to RF vs. LH'ers, you can put him in a similar position as he has been with the Astros alternating between 2B and SS.
  19. Don't we already have a Mark who plays well all over the field? Who has 1 game at SS this year, while the Cubs still need a SS this year. Unless you think Izturis/Theriot is acceptable and that the Cubs don't need another bat that hits LH'ers very well.
  20. Not that I recall, he went to Northwestern and spent time at Wrigley while at NU.
  21. While I don't consider Oswalt a possibility, I wonder if the Cubs would show some interest in Loretta.
  22. BP also has Murton has an above avg. defender, which I dispute as well. Jones has a bad arm, below avg. accerlation/speed for a CF'er, and nothing outstanding as far as getting jumps on the ball. I've never fielding metrics, they've progressed, but not to the point where I'd consider as valid as my own eyes.
