  1. If Phillips were to throw at Pujols, there would've been no chance for Phillips to be able to claim he was throwing to 1B, it would've been 10 feet up the 1B line into RF. Phillips needs to get rid of that ball quicker after he pushed off the bag rather than an extra shuffle step. That extra shuffle step might've been to avoid hitting Pujols w/the ball, which is Phillips' fault for being a puss. If the runner is between you and the target, the runner will move or get hit and it's a out with all runners returning to their previous base, it's a win/win.
  2. In the battle of my two favorite college fb programs UK defeated EKU 50-10. Good to see the offense do well especially running the ball. More importantly despite it being EKU, the defense did better than I expected.
  3. Hopefully, he can give the Cubs top 4 starters some rest in Sept. w/out costing them some games. All depends on how hard he has been hit, if he's not giving up line drive base hits all over the park and more of a fly ball Lilly-lite type of pitcher he might be able to sneak by as a pitcher that makes you wonder how he gets hitters out. His stuff isn't anything above a career minor leaguer at this point, but he's getting them out.
  4. Hmmm.... Him and Ankiel are very similar hitters except MLB has figured out Branyan.
  5. Moore wasn't around for the Hochevar drafting though.
  6. MLB would use the same discretion as the umps. I doubt they even review it, unless it is send it in. Pujols doesn't deserve to get suspended for that, but who knows, I've been surprised before and I hope he doesn't.
  7. Meche has done well, compared to almost all of the mid tier FA signings, he has been among the most productive. He signs Dotel fairly cheap and gets Kyle Davies out of it. Their best pitcher this year (Bannister) was acq'd for Burgos. He got De La Rosa for Graffanino. Their farm system has improved as well. For what resources they have, he has been almost perfect.
  8. They each have off-days on August 27th and Sept. 10th, which would be interesting to see how that plays out.
  9. His slider is a late breaking one, similar but not as effective or sharp as Marmol's. Reyes throws his in on the hands to RH'ers designed to break over the plate. It acts more like a cutter than a sweeping slider like Clement had or someone like Bonderman.
  10. Everything as far as the future sucess of this team will depend on the progression of the young players. They've locked up this expensive group for a long time and will have little flexibility around it. This is where the progression of players like Pie, Soto, Marmol, Marshall, Hill, Wuertz, Gallagher, maybe Murton can fill positions of need at a reduced rate. This team isn't where it needs to be long-term, they'll need those players I mentioned to become that. "OK" GMs hardly ever lead teams to WS titles.
  11. I'm not a big Beane guy, he's a good GM, not the best, but he consistently puts together some well-constructed rosters w/out much flexibility in FA. He has consistently put his team in a position to win, which I can't say for Hendry. Like I said before, Hendry had a very good off-season as well as in-season trades and yet, the Cubs have struggled to be above .500 in the worst division in baseball. Hendry has the tenure to be judged on his full body of work. Right now, it has been mediocre and if it's avg. at best, that isn't good enough.
  12. Dayton Moore has very quietly done a very good job since becoming GM. Their farm system has improved, the 25 man roster has improved, and their international scouting has improved to where they are as active as most of the large market teams. They'll likely have a 10+ game improvement over last year. Since June they have been 36-32 and outscored their opponents 351-297.
  13. Given how poorly Reyes pitched, he should've been tagged more than what he was. That one pitch cost him the game, but he threw plenty of bad ones. For some reason, the Cubs didn't look like they seeing the ball well out of his hand. His FB was avg. about 90 with no movement and up in the zone. His slider was sharper from what I remember.
  14. I haven't looked at the Chicago radar, but about an hour northwest it is pouring and not letting up.
  15. Good move by the Sox. If Crede comes back 100% at 3B, Fields likely shifts to LF, there's two/thirds of the OF. Given that OF, I don't know if they could trust Sweeney in CF though since non of them would have much range for any of the OF spots.
  16. It's pretty telling of how bad this team was last year when the Cubs spent as much as anyone last off-season and is hovering right around .500 in the worst division in MLB . The Cubs had a good off-season as well, probably as good as anyone in MLB so it's not like they didn't maximize their potential improvement. I don't think it gets any easier in this... Would you want Hendry as the GM next year or take a chance and see what is out there? I'd be curious to see how that hiring process would go given the team president?
  17. i wouldn't either. Maybin could be Soriano at a very cheap price for the next few years. Maybin reminds me more of V. Guerrero than Soriano.
  18. That's more damning towards MacPhail and espec. Lynch rather than praise towards Hendry, IMO. He took over a team that was a 90 loss team with a very good farm system (which he is partially responsible for building). That means there's been improvement, but not success. I wouldn't qualify the last 5 years as successful or progressive.
  19. If they didn't lock him up, they'd have Lilly as the ace with another second tier pitcher as the #2. I agree, they did what they had to do.
  20. I'm shocked by it too. He's likely going to be overmatched unless he's matured that much since last year. If he plays everyday vs. RH'ers, it'll be interesting to see how he does once they figure him out. Once he got to two strikes, the RH'ed slider just put him away everytime. Hopefully, he has learned to lay off of them out of the zone. Like I said in the past, I still haven't seen a MWL player that had a higher ceiling than him (Patterson, Pujols, Mauer, Dopirak, Fielder, Bruce, Upton, etc)
  21. What do you think about Kenny Williams spending 108 million? Williams has a much better track record than Hendry, but he did not put together a good club for this year. I think White Sox fandom is pretty sour on Williams' work this year, and rightfully so. The WS win bought him a little time, but 2 non-playoff years in a row has dried up Kenny's reserve of goodwill. He has to do better, they did have a 90 win season afterwards as well. He just bombed in building that bullpen stocking it young flame throwers doesn't work if they don't locate. His OF was just a mess as was sticking with Uribe. If I was to guess, they have more potential to win 90 next year than the Cubs. That's putting alot of trust in Williams to correct his mistakes though.

  23. After only about 20 or so ABs at AA. Surprised, but he obviously has the tools and has the good makeup to likely handle this adjustment well. http://www.citizen-times.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=200770817010
  24. He only had one bad inning, he still has been up with his sinker. Most of his outs were flyball outs. Until he quits overthrowing his sinker, it'll be belt high again.
