  1. You expected the Cubs to be psychic and predict that he would get injured in his 1st year?
  2. Average isn't good enough. Of course, when it hasn't been two years that players have been in the system, bias is more likely to take control rather than objective thinking if you're unable to factor that it isn't been more than two years. I don't give crap about what BA writes, I respect their work, but they had the Twins with the best draft in '04 and were way off, the Tigers before that, and they've been right as well (LA in '03). History will dictate which teams will have better draft success than BA, that history is created by quality scouting directors, good scouts, and productive player personnel. Some of the better Scouting Directors reside in LA, Washington, MIL, and in my opinion Cubs. Wilken has had a better track record of drafts than BA. What is by the book anyways? LA's drafting philosophy? Oakland's? What Baseball America writes? This is just your opinion of what you think it should be rather than some book. I'm cutting Wilken a break b/c it hasn't been two years yet, you seem completely unable to factor the roles of other scouts, player development, etc. and mention Snider/Colvin.
  3. This... Of course, you probably believe that he has all of a sudden become a bust and the statement above never existed that it's a figment of an imagination. B/c two months into his professional career that a 18-19yo kid will be deemed a bust. Let me guess, in '01 you were pissed the Cubs selected Prior instead of Tex? With hindsight, you can't be wrong.
  4. No one is saying the Cubs have had great drafts the last two years, for me, they have been avg. For those who complain about Samardzija, BA was saying that he had 1st rd. talent, but wasn't deemed signable b/c of FB.The Cubs took the chance and it hasn't worked out. That's a case of selective memory. The Cubs had highly rated drafts in '01 and '02, only been 6 years since then and they have Soto and Theriot to show for it. If Wilken preferred Colvin to Snider, it was b/c of he was trying to ignore BA, or prove to everyone he could be some sort of maverick and find that diamond in the rough, he projected Colvin to be a better player than Snider and I'm sure he liked Snider as well, not too many scouting directors would say those stupdi examples you gave regarding a player of 1st rd talent like Snider.
  5. No, it was assumed that they had Vitters as the BPA.
  6. No one here has mentioned the fight between TB and Boston. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2008_06_05_tbamlb_bosmlb_1&mode=gameday Screw Boston. This what started it, from last night's game: http://mlb.mlb.com/media/video.jsp?mid=200806042843745 Dirty play right there, you don't take out a player on a straight steal. Some piece of garbage player trying to prove himself.
  7. Does every fan think they're team are taking best guys at every position in the draft? Barney prob. fills a role, that's an example of a safe pick. I agree that I would rather see a higher ceiling guy there, but there's going to be guys like this and there's going to be high ceiling guys mixed in. TB has had a bunch safe picks and signable guys below slot mixed in too as has NYY and Boston, etc.
  8. Navi is fine, he has improved defensively and is hitting the ball. That surplus of pitching isn't there yet, they shouldn't trade something that isn't there yet. If they trade Davis who becomes real good and Price and McGee don't produce, Hellickson gets hurt, etc., that pitching surplus dies and they'll likely need to overspend via FA or prospects they might not have. Look at the Boise rotation from '01, I believe with Guzman, Willis, Ryu, Hagerty, Mitre. Cubs at the time thought any of them could be expendable b/c of the surplus from one short-season team. The one they trade away is the only one able to maintain any type of career and the Cubs 2 years later have to rely on Shawn Estes and Rusch.
  9. The Cubs have had every scouting philosophy known to man, some drafts they've put an emphasis on high ceiling athletes from HS that have bombed (98'). They've taken high ceiling college arms that have failed (02'), they taken safe college position players w/good apporaches at the plate that have failed, they've drafted overslotted college position players that have failed, they've drafted pure hitting HS kids that were supposed to be safe HS bets, etc.
  10. It's not meant to be, but it adds something that is always overlooked when drafts don't look good after a couple of years after they happen. You draft high ceiling HS kids and they fail, people complain about the risk and they're just a toolsy team looking for athletes. Draft safe kids and never get superstars and people complain about that. The common thread between those two scenarions is player development not scouting philosophies.
  11. It's a dream world to assume the Cubs don't have a budget in regards to signing players, regardless if it's MLB FA, international FA, or the draft. You don't have to be sympathetic towards them not spend, at least be aware that is why they are not signing every soup du jour left in the draft and that budget is created well above Wilken's head.
  12. No one is saying you don't have the right to voice a premature opinion. Just like no one should say I don't have the right to call it premature. Fact is, unless there is some kid that will be signed way above slot and fell b/c of injury and/or signability, the difference as far as future ceilings/talent between the Cubs' picks in those rounds and others in that round is likely very small to the point where the development system plays a larger role on whether or not they progress moreso than where they were scouted and drafted.
  13. If the Cubs drafted as high as TB and KC, they would sign those high picks as well. If the Cubs feel Melville isn't worth his demands, why should they draft him? I have no problems with the Cubs draft so far, they'll never go for 6 for 6, some unrealistic expectations in regards to the draft. Yes, the Cubs have a scouting and player development budget. For what it cost to get the Korean SS and Cashman is likely the equiv. to what it'll cost to sign Melville.
  14. Wow, you're just determined to stir up trouble with these petty little potshots, aren't you? We're not really talking "facts" here so much, but whatever. If you disagree with me on baseball opinions there's no reason to go where you're going here. You'll notice I asked about the possible high school guys and such. Which no one really bothered to answer, but okay. You asked about high ceiling HS pitchers in the 11th and 12th rounds, who knows if they'll be there by then, or if they're even signable.
  15. Baseball doesn't work like that, there's a thing called "dollar on the muscle", every kid is given this regardless if it is above slot or below it. They have a set budget most likely, maybe since they have increased Pacific Rim scouting and signing that it has made the Cubs more geared towards slot.
  16. At least give Wilken's draft some reasonable time before it is expected to get to the majors. Not many teams have '06 draftees in the majors. It takes the avg. Collegiate Junior 3.2 years to reach the majors and 4.6 for HS kids, I think that is a fair starting point whether you can call Wilken "the Dusty Baker of the scouting world". Why draft Meyer, when he doesn't want to sign?
  17. People are here saying Wilken sucks and what not (based on what two years), I've given my opinion on each of the kids. I haven't said it's a horrible draft or what not b/c there are still plenty of picks left in rounds that usually separate avg. drafts and very good ones. People were dancing in the street with the '02 draft w/all those high ceiling arms, unfort. it ended up as one of the worst.
  18. Drafts are better off being graded 3-4 years after they occur.
  19. I like the A's pick of Christian out of Michigan (SS)
  20. If the Nats can pull this, they'll have another great draft. Of course, they hired Rizzo from AZ at the same time as the last two drafts,
