Right now Lee is hitting well, the Cubs are scoring plenty of runs, and the difference between hitting 3rd and 4th isn't much of a difference, espec. with the way the 5-6-7 hitters have produced this year.
His delivery with that severe shoulder tilt has to be nearly constant and almost perfect for him to maintain consistent control. If there's a slight glitch, it could go from ok to awful simply b/c of the moving parts in his delivery. You look at his delivery compared to Maddux and you see why his delivery sometimes leadsto poor command or a negative adjustment can lead to horrible results. At this stage, I'm glad it's not an injury and could still poss. be fixed. I'm sure part of his problem has become mental, there wouldn't be anyone that what he has gone in '08 to wouldn't have it take a toll on them mentally or damage their confidence.
The Cubs haven't been good at developing collegiate hitters either. There is something to be said that when a kid goes to college, the level of competition is the same when he's 18 and when he is 21. This can be costly espec. for kids that aren't in Elite conferences as far as their development. That same kid going thru the minors (if he has everything to succeed mentally and physically) would progress further and quicker going thru the minors compared to College. If he's overly aggressive or passive in HS, he will likely be that in College, and if he gets drafted, he'll prob. be like that in the minors with marginal improvements w/his approach likely negated by improved command of AA/AAA pitchers. I think extra value placed on collegiate hitters compared to their overall tools simply b/c they went to college is overrated. As far as catchers and pitchers, the increase in competition can expose catchers in a far greater manner than HS hitters and additional usage of pitchers can give a better idea of risk of injury.
Nuts. Shields and Kazmir are keepers too. Add any 3 of those 4 and their rotation is nuts. You're forgetting Garza as well, who will be a #2 starter very soon.
I cant wait until the Yakees and Red Sox buy all their players and they go back to being perenial celler dwellers. Bitter? Unfort. TB is locking up all their key pieces.
My daughter saw that last night and asked could we go. (Of course, one of her favorite parts of Sea World was petting the sting rays.) lord, by the time we(the Cubs) go back there she could be in her twenties. Hopefully a new park will be up by then.
Except he did bunt it well, Percival was coming of an energizing strikeout, and it took a ridiculous play on both the throw (a diving barehander) and the scoop(hit him in the chest) for them to win it. People really need to sit down and think about it or actually see the play. Have you ever been to an infield practice? Do you know how often that barehanded scoop is practiced as the final play of IF before each IF'er heads towards the dugout? Do you know that Longoria is already one of the best defensive 3B in the game? Did you know that ball was bunted too hard and too close to the mound? The play that saved it was the scoop by Aybar rather than the play by Longoria as most 3B are capable of making that play espec. one as good Evan. If Johnson was an above avg. runner he probably beats that out.
Sonny is a very streaky pitcher, there isn't much between being very good and very bad. Everything will depend on his command and how he nibbles for strikes to get ahead and uses the curve as his out pitch. He's the exact opposite pitcher as Kazmir.
Percival didn't have good stuff last night, Johnson doesn't have great speed nor has he shown to be a good bunter in the past. Bad time to use the element of surprise whether it was called from the dugout or done on his own.
Blowouts can be an indication of how bad a pitcher can be on a given day rather than long-term failure. The Cubs used it as a selling point for Marquis (which I disagreed with, more b/c I dislike his apporach towards the game) as far as his 2 bad outings in '06 tainting his ERA. If you want an example of pythag. record look at AZ last year, they took the Cubs to the woodshed when it mattered. Yes, I believe the Cubs are playing better than anyone expected as is STL. The Cubs being projected in 1st b/c they are likely the best team, I don't think anyone has disputed that, but to say at this stage I expected the Cubs to be in 1st place with one of the top 10 run differentials of all-time and projected them to 105-110 games is prob. a case of bs'ing.
