  1. But I think the Reds were going to use Dunn at 1B? Throw in Sing, take out Murton?
  2. The one glaring difference from the 03-04 teams, which makes me sad, is that those teams had an OF. At that point, both Sammy and Moises would give you a +800 OPS. It didn't matter what Patterson did. This year, I wouldn't expect that kind of production, but it could happen.
  3. I like the Miller signing, don't get me wrong. But I agree with Mustang that it leaves the "if healthy" clause attached to our pitching staff. I am interested in what JH is going to do with our pitching staff. We have about 15 Major league arms and they can't all pitch for the Cubs.
  4. I agree. When Hairston mentioned working out with Olympic sprinters this winter....I like Todd Walker don't get me wrong, but I think Hairston might be the best #2 hitter and 2B. A .370 OBP from Hairston wouldn't be unprecedented either... I said it some where; I would love to see Jerry get a full-time shot, especially at Neifi's expense. If we can get something of value for Walker and Jerry puts up .290/.350 and plays a solid 2B, its a win-win. I think that might be the best option as well.
  5. What's not to get? Howry, Eyre, Perez, and Jones don't bring with them multiple season-ending injuries from their past. I know. It's just that one is a low risk/high reward type deal, while the others appear to be high risk types, for a lot more money and years at that.
  6. I really don't get JH. He makes a nice signing like this, yet also signed folks like Howry, Eyre, Neifi! and Jones to much more expensive deals.
  7. 1 Year eh. So what's the deal with Miller? When will he be ready to pitch?
  8. I'd do a deal with Philly for Abreu. Obviously there'd have to be more pieces involved, but it would improve the offense and defense.
  9. Wow with Weaver and Milton? Lots of HRs given up.
  10. Maybe Michaels has a drinking problem...
  11. There was speculation that he had a slightly torn laburm (?) but that rumor was refuted by the Braves. I think the Red Sox planned to keep him but when Damon flew the coop they were forced to act. I think you're right. In fact, I head an interview with Larry Luchinno (prior to Damon signing) where he stated that after giving up Hanley Ramirez in the Josh Beckett trade that they liked the idea of bringing in Marte as a way of replacing the loss of a top prospect. I think the Red Sox had every intention of keeping Marte, but like you said, the need for a centerfielder has forced their hand considerably. I guess I'm just curious as to why the Braves ever traded him? Was it a bad move by them, to get Renteria? Boston trading him, at least to me, makes more sense. They have Lowell, and after Lowell, I'd imagine they'd go with Youkilis. As you have said, they needed a CFer, so they used their assets to fill a void, probably overpaying a bit, but that's okay for a team like Boston. I just don't understand the Braves reasoning.
  12. Not at all. At least not from my perspective. He's a nice hitter, for a 2B, but his defense has always been a problem. It's more of an explanation for why so few teams seem interested in him... I also dispute that the Cubs have screwed him. I remember hearing the guy from Baseball Solutions.com on the radio rattle off the numbers about 2B . Walker was the worst 2B in the MLs at turning the double play in 2003. He platooned in 2004 and was injured for part of 2005 so I don't think he's improved in that area. I think teams are taking those things into consideration. Certainly, if he were a hot item he would have been traded already. Defense is not a static ability. Like hitting people have good year's and bad years. Walker had a very bad year defensively in '03, and was better in '04 and '05. Still below average, but not the travesty that people are making his defense to be. In fact, very similar to Juan Pierre in CF. I agree with you. But GMs in the league must not.
  13. Is there something wrong with Marte? I mean traded twice in the same off-season? The trade that surprised me was the Braves. They could have used Betemit at Short and saved the 6 million and top flight prospect without getting Renteria. What gives with this?
  14. Crisp is average in CF - Damon was great in CF other than having a terrible arm. I do like the trade for Boston b/c they really needed a CF and Crisp is a huge upgrade over what they had but IMO they downgraded defense in CF. You're right, they did downgrade. I was looking at the data for Crisp as a corner outfielder. I'm surprised that they are willing to go with an AGonz at short. I would think they'd be better off just starting Pedroia?
  15. I think this was a good trade for the Red Sox. They have a logjam at third, with Youkilis, Lowell and Marte and they have a hole in CF. Crisp is as good a defensive CFer as Damon, and it is not out of the question that he will match him offesively. I am curious to see what this does to the Lugo talk, too.
  16. Small text? or a long bus?
  17. That's what I'm thinking is if Baker has Perez in there and not Hairston or Walker. I would rather have Walker in the two spot but with Pierre being lefthanded I'm curious if Baker would bat two lefties in a row. I pray to christ Cedeno hits .300 this season, with no slumps. I'd just rather see Baker gone. IMO it just makes things so much better. I don't know much about Bass fishing, or what it is like to bat behind Hank Aaron, sooooo I think Baker should stick around.
  19. Do we really want Murton hitting 2nd? I like the OBP, but I would think his power would be pretty useful hitting 6th? I suppose it depends on who is playing, Walker, Hairston or Neifi! If it's the last one, yeah, bat him 2nd.
  20. While I like Lofton a lot, I am happier with Pierre. But I get the feeling Hendry could have offered a bit less, maybe making two deals, using a few more players, and have still netted Pierre plus Huff. Pierre, Murton and Huff in the outfield isn't bad at all.
  21. I think Neifi! could have a spot on this team. Remember how the BoSox used Pokey!? As a late inning sub for either Cabrera or Bellhorn. But as has been said a billion times, Dusty won't let him "fall" to that roll. He should not be used, ever, as a pitch hitter (okay okay, if Macias is on your team, then maybe) and should rarely start, and if he does he should bat 8th (9th if Carlos is pitching). The real problem is Dusty.
  22. Best "First Post" ever!
  23. WoW! I'm not saying Grieve would outperform Jones, and he wouldn't be anywhere near the defender. But I think Grieve could do a .260/.350/.440 line, for a lot cheaper.
