  1. I PMed DJAXX my plans. While I thank you for the discretion, no need for that with me in the future. For planning purposes, I'd like to donate $50, and if DJAXX needs to bid higher, I'll cover another $50. I didn't mention this in my PM, but I'll probably put in minimum bids on the NSBB auction materials if they don't move quickly (which, of course, I'd be happy to cover). Another broad thought: obviously this is a fast moving thing and none of want to get sidetracked. But a question for the future: should we consider holding a larger offseason auction to benefit the site and/or Cubs Care?
  2. Nah, that's too much. We don't need or want Milton, that would strictly be a salary dump -- which is a disadvantage to Cincy. I think you're more likely to see something like Dubois, Hill and Sing for Dunn and Milton.
  3. I think LaRussa's still annoyed at Clemens' last ASG performance, personally. He wants to win the game because he wants home field advantage should he make it to the World Series. All in all, personally, I really don't care who starts. Carpenter's been very good this year. So has Clemens; so has Willis. As much as I hate to say it, I think Clemens should start. But, if LaRussa wants to start his guy, I'm not going to complain.
  4. I don't have a lot of collectibles, myself, because I'm notoriously unsentimental. Actually, no, my brother "acquired" most of them from me and sold them off a long time ago. And there was that Cubs hat autographed by Sammy Sosa that an ex-girlfriend "acquired" in brutal break-up. I think I have some Shawon Dunston autographed stuff, some unautographed cards of Ryno and Grace. And Hal Morris (who went to my high school). Oh, and that Steve Buechele autographed baseball. :D I do have an autographed, game-worn Shawon Dunston jersey. BUt that's not for sale or donation at any price. Nope, I'm afraid it's a paypal donation for me.
  5. Before Spivey went down for the Nationals, they had an excess there with Vidro, Carroll, Spivey, and Harris in AAA. I thought they might have been a good partner for the Twins. Certainly better than Boone.
  6. Charity work is a pretty important component of a baseball team, as well as its players and wives. In one form or another, this all comes down to service and PR. I am a cynic, but that doesn't mean that they don't care about what they do. Because they do care. And that's where we can come in. We can make an impact beyond just our ability to debate the Cubs, write letters, follow games, buy tickets and merchandise. We can help them towards accomplishing their goals, as well. Part of why the teams are willing to accomodate us is because, like it or not, we're a presence on the web with a significant following (including reporters), and shunning your fan base is foolish. So they will pay attention to us, at least to a degree, because of the potential bad PR we could generate. Imagine if a reporter wrote a story about how the Cubs spurned their rabid fan base -- they don't want that. But, that only goes so far. Now, the second part is where we help them acheive their goals. When they see us as not only fans, but also willing to help them with their fundraising and their charities, well, that shows commitment to them as well as a demonstration that the time they spent on us was time well spent -- an investment. Remember, when you do a favor for someone, they are psychologically much more apt to like you than otherwise. This fits that situation.
  7. Since we had two topics on the 3B situation for the ASG, I merged the two topics, and edited the title to reflect the contents of both threads.
  8. I'm glad that Borowski will get another chance. I hope he succeeds -- as long as it's not against the Cubs.
  9. It's not alliteration, but it is assonance -- the repetition of vowel sounds. Dusty Buster. And I seemingly recall, some time ago, a request was made to stop using labelling posters and arbitrarily grouping them together using a potential perjorative -- Corey Cartel spring immediately to mind; I believe that the Dusty Buster label would be included among them, particularly as used in this instance. Thanks Brinoch, I was thinking of the recent "Dunn Detractors," which is alliteration. Dusty Busters is most definitely not alliteration - nice catch, my bad. No worries; I've made my share of similar mistakes regarding grammar/literature terms. Not that it matters, we're not in class anymore. Archaically speaking, I remember reading that assonance, consonance and alliteration were all, at one point, called alliteration. I don't know whether or not this is true, though.
  10. Saying that someone is Dusty busting during a debate is fine. That's an action, not a label and it's not insulting. Calling a poster a Dusty Buster because they happen to be making a Dusty critique -- whether or not they do it all the time -- really isn't fine. When you do that, you label a group of posters and lump a lot of folks into one amorphous group. "Dusty buster" is irritating to a number of posters, though it's not offensive like Corey Cartel, or Corey Gestapo, so there hasn't been a crack down. There is a strong preference that folks avoid terms like that. Does this help clarify things? I hope it does.

  12. I don't see how cubs dane's skill with language has any bearing on the content of his post. Please keep your comments directed to the post, and not the poster. Thanks.
  13. Welcome to forum! The board has a FAQ which describes to board's guidelines and a little bit about the NSBB community. Please take a moment and familiarize yourself with them. It'll help you get comfortable with the how things work here. Everyone is welcome to offer their opinions. We value them, and we encourage debate. However, we do not condone or accept insults. Treat everyone with respect -- if you disagree, please keep comments at the post, not the poster. We do frown on swearing -- despite the fact that we are all immensely frustrated with the team -- because this is a family site and we have children and teenagers who visit the site and post regularly. If you have any questions, don't hesistate to ask a mod! So, it is ok for a post under rants to talk about women being whoreish for wearing colored underwear under white pants, but I say I should be cursing at the Cubs and this is frowed upon? My use of the word damn is frowned upon? Maybe I stumbled into the wrong place. I thought this might be a place for men to hang out and discuss manly topics, mainly, why the cubs suck so much this year. Geez. cubfaninaruba, That was a pretty standard welcome note for new posters, not a shot across your bow. We want new posters like yourself to fit in quickly with a minimum of difficulty. A quick read of the FAQ is helpful for most new members. As to your question, NSBB is a site where people of all ages post, and we try to keep things civil, and thus, swearing is frowned upon. Saying the word damn isn't a high crime, but it's not really needed. The Rants forum is a place to vent steam, and sometimes things get quite heated there. Now, to answer your unasked question, when I'm watching the Cubs blow a game, I swear loudly at the television. So, please, feel free to discuss why the Cubs have been terrible. It's something that is being talked about quite a bit.
  14. Prophetic call. Murton's debut was great. Can't beat a 1.000 career batting average (with a sacrifice fly on top of that). Good things happen to players who answer questions from NSBB members. :D Indeed. And let's not forget the walk, too. Murton now has an OBP of .750 and an OPS of 2.250!
  15. It did.
  16. It will be shortly. :)
  17. He doesn't know how to. Well, if the A's score another couple of runs...
  18. Ask, and you shall receive. Good work to Murton, Zambrano (kind of) and Hairston.
  19. Second time tonight that Murton's been in scoring position with two outs. C'mon, bring him in!
  20. Something just isn't right with Z. I can't watch the game (still at work), but are his mechanics out of whack?
  21. DePodesta inherited some bad contracts. Could take a couple fo years to clear those and get the players he wants in there. He's also been completely crushed with injuries this season. Drew breaking his arm is akin to the Hawpe liner that crushed us all for at least a week. That really hurt the team.
  22. Great thread -- thanks for stopping in, Bruce. Your insight is *very* appreciated.
