I believe James is a RFA after next season, but it would be completely worthless to make him an offer since A, he wouldn't sign one (wouldn't be max dollars), and there's no chance in hell Cleveland wouldn't match it. In 08, he should be an UFA, and he has some weird endorsement clauses that kick in if he goes to New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles. While it would be ideal to think he'd come to Chicago, we'd be hard pressed to be enough under the cap to make him an offer. We'd have to rid of Tyson and essentially say bye to some of our current core to have a chance of landing him. I think the odds are pretty remote. A realistic scenario is the Nets moving to Brooklyn with part owner Jay-Z, who apparently is very tight with James. Vince Carter is an unrestricted Free Agent after next season and could be let go with the hopes of landing James as the ultimate Free Agent Prize. I don't think its too far fetched. Granted, James could make more "salary" with the Nets, but his endorsements skyrocket if he makes it to one of the "big three" cities. And the Knicks sure as hell ain't gonna have the cap room. I have no problem trading Tyson Chandler to clear the cap room when the time comes if it gave us a shot at landing James.
