    Some responses to a few things posted around here... 1) Eric Patterson is doing quite a good job in Peoria this season, don't get me wrong. However, there are a few knocks I have against him. As it already has been mentioned, he's playing in a league that's at or slightly below the level of talent he faced in college. I'd like to see him at Daytona by season's end to see how he's doing there. Secondly, if he were a SS and projected to play there effectively in the majors, I'd be MUCH higher on him. But as a 2B? Ehhhhhhh...it's a bit easier to be a crappy defensive player with a good bat (see: Kent, Jeff). My understanding is that Eric's defense at second is only above average, but I might be mistaken. He's a top 20 guy for me and he could shoot into the Top 10 if the Cubs move him up to Daytona and he keeps up his performance. 2) Angel Guzman has such a special and incredible upside...but come on, this entire season he's been "7-10 days away" from returning. I'd love to see him pitching this season, but until that happens, he's been passed by a good number of pitching prospects on my list. 3) I loved that episode, too. :D

    Wasn't he one of the candidates to take the Cubs' open manager's spot back in the '02/'03 offseason?

    He has spent some amount of time at DH. That always helps.

    Managers and coaches are the ones who decide the awards. It's kind of like being named an NFL All Pro, where typically a person is given the honor based on reputation more than actual play. There are no qualifications for the amount of time played at the position (as evidenced by when Raffy won one for 1B despite playing 28 games there), although it usually helps to hit at least .260 or better.

    Backe's not exactly established and valuable either. That career 5+ ERA would look reeeeeeeeeeeeal good at the GABP. Patton's the one that bothers me in this deal, though. How a team evaluates him is a big part of the deal, but basically speaking, he's a young and mature lefty who has terrific and advanced stuff and might move fast through any system. He is in Low A right now, so he's a ways away from contributing. He also is a bit undersized (6'1, 180 lbs), so durability might be an issue. My problem is whether or not the Cubs have a prospect like him that would interest the Reds. Hill or Marshall, maybe. It all depends on how the Reds see the Cubs' prospects. My honest opinion is that the Cubs could (and should) trump this deal and still not overpay. Patterson + Mitre + Marshall + cash or a PTBNL for Dunn might not be the worst of ideas, imo.

    The fact that he's repeating the FSL is what's holding me back from ranking him in my Top 5. Also, apparently he's had his share of injury problems during his time with the Tigers. I'd love to think he can keep up his performance in AA and stay healthy. However, I'm still a bit wary of him.

    I'm rooting for a 25 inning game in which Generalissimo Pujols comes in to pitch and blows his arm out. That's just me, though. :D

    1) Pie - No-brainer. Plate discipline could use work, but the tools are now there. 2) Harvey - 5 tool player, made improvement with his Ks, and has a terrific ceiling. 3) Marshall - Lefty with supreme control and pretty darn good stuff. Doing well in AA. 4) Dopirak - Everything's still there for him to be a top power hitter...but he'll need a better second half. 5) Hill - ML-ready at this point; will make great trade bait or a pretty good #5 next season if need be. 6) Murton - Needs regular playing time and will be stuck in LF. Hitting and baserunning are quite nice. 7) Pawelek - Tantalizing performance in Mesa shows hope for the future. Just hope he's mechanically sound. 8) Cedeno - Like Murton, needs playing time more than anything. Good D and good offensive upside. 9) Moore - Repeating Daytona, but performing pretty darn well. Will need to show it's not a fluke. 10) Petrick - Injuries hurt, but stuff and makeup are promising. Just missing: Mark Reed (good hitter at a tough position, needs to improve defense and get experience), Sean Gallagher (unless he can grow taller, his upside is limited), Renyel Pinto (AAA performance is worrying, but rebounded in AA and has very good stuff), and Carlos Marmol (high ceiling, but AA has been a challenge).

    Was it a legit balk? Some one on another forum who saw it claims that it was a BS call.

    They have a deep enough farm system that I think the Dodgers could afford to part with some of their top prospects. Heck, their AA team is more stacked than most teams' farm systems. The NL West is really weak now as it is. With Bonds seemingly done for, none of the teams really strike me as strong enough to really dominate that division. The Dodgers could really become the top team in that division for a long time to come if they could...but they don't have a consistent and healthy offensive threat. Give them Adam Dunn and they might well take over the NL West for the foreseeable future and should have their share of shots in the playoffs during that time. I think that'd be worth parting with guys like Loney, Guzman, Broxton, and Billingsley.

    Precisely. Let the Braves get hot, go on a big run in the second half, then beat up on the Nationals, Phillies, Mets, and Marlins. The Nationals aren't winning that division. Book it.
