  1. Vitters was at least defensible at the time, as there was a lot of chatter about whether he or Moustakas was the top HS bat and both were projected as Top 5 picks. He didn't live up to the hype in any meaningful way, although I remember he had awful injury/health luck in the minors; I want to say an extended bout of mono and a broken wrist from a HPB? The more baffling pick that year was actually immediately after the Cubs, when the Pirates took Moskos, who was generally seen as a mid to late 1st rounder, when they had their proverbial pick of the litter.
  2. The funniest part about the draft thread was watching everyone post-Simpson pick immediately divide into two camps, with one side flipping out over the team being cheap tightwads who couldn't be bothered to pony up for an overslot like Zach Lee, and the other side, well: And then the second round came up...Reggie Golden: And then, after it became obvious Matt Szczur would be the only meaningful overslot pick: Cripes, that draft was depressing.
  3. I vividly remember waiting for the bus at North and Clybourne while following the 2010 MLB Draft on my phone (I think through MLB's or BA's website). The Cubs' pick came up, and I remember dreading the possibility of Alex Wimmers. The site froze for what felt like 15 minutes until Hayden Simpson's name finally came up, with no links or information beyond position and college. All I could do was laugh. I just tried digging up NSBB's 2010 MLB Draft thread, but sadly it seems to have been lost to the ages. That was an all-time doom scrolling thread. It was as if everyone's dogs had just been put down because the vet bills were too expensive.
  4. This might come across as a tad bit callous, but there's something oddly comforting reading an article like this and realizing that most of the pitchers' struggles can be chalked up to injury, rather than lack of development. Don't get me wrong, it sucks that we haven't seen fully healthy versions of Killian, et al. this season, but this is significantly better than the bad ol' days of guys like Mark Pawelek and Hayden Simpson just flat-out sucking.
  5. Just put him opposite the best defensive 1B of this past generation and make sure the 1B is like 7'6. I'm sure that'll work out fine.
  6. That description sounds weirdly like Aramis Ramirez to me.
  7. Taillon makes the most sense to me as a buy-middle trade candidate for a team looking to make a deal with the Cubs. He's done well enough this season that you can buy last season was just a bump in the road for him...but you're also unsure if this season is just a dead cat bounce. I remember articles speculating that he was tipping his pitches last season, and perhaps that's been corrected, but there's still enough to make me wonder. Additionally, the Cubs could easily dump Taillon and still be competitive for a wild card spot, particularly with Assad and Wicks coming off the IL (hopefully) in the near future.
  8. Completely out? Nah. He's ironed out enough of his chase/swing and miss this season to tamp down concerns about how he'd handle more advanced pitching, plus he also seems like a good bet to stick at 3B. I think he's solidly in the same tier with Benge and Waldschmidt of college hitters who should be available at 14 and who also seem to fit the Cubs' bill.
  9. I don't think King matches this FO's profile for college bats in the first round; he feels more like a Hendry Era kind of guy as a toolsy hitter who's rough around the edges. It feels like the current FO (dating back to Theo) prefers polished college hitters who don't have much swing and miss in their profile. It's also why, as much as I really want Honeycutt, I don't see him as a realistic pick for them at 14, either. Granted, the guys available in this scenario are not particularly inspiring. I'd probably go with Yesavage or an underslot with someone like Malcolm Moore here if I were doing this mock, but neither pick would have me dancing in the streets.
  10. As always, though, they are two years too late in doing all of this. Going into denial over Ball's knee led to this nonsense, when they should have pulled the cord sooner.
  11. That sums up my thoughts on this year's draft pretty well. Aside from Condon/Bazzana, it seems like there aren't many guys who look like they could be superstar caliber guys in MLB in the near future. Everyone else has varying degrees of negatives and mixed opinions. For example, there was a recent discussion on here where Tibbs picked up some Ian Happ comps. That's not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but it's not exactly inspiring, either.
  12. What do we think, walkoff HR or double and walkoff single?
  13. Honeycutt is the dream for me. If you iron out his swing and miss, I think you're looking at a guy who could be a pre-shoulder injury Cody Bellinger type of player at the plate and in the field. Honeycutt represents a big risk and doesn't quiiiiiiiite fit the model the Cubs have followed during Hoyer's tenure, but I feel like he's the only exciting guy who will be available when the Cubs pick. After that, I'm kinda lukewarm on the field. If one of the top three college pitchers fall, that would be awesome, but I don't see it happening. In terms who *should* be available, I think I'd be good with Malcolm Moore, Sloan, Cam Smith, Waldschmidt, or Benge in that order, but I don't feel strongly about any of them.
  14. As with any TJS survivor, the big goal should always be finishing the season healthy and productive, even if the stuff isn't stellar. He needs to build his arm back up, and his breaking/offspeed pitches should follow.
  15. Well, that was a disappointingly obvious result.
  16. 2-1 win. This team has shown a strange aversion to getting swept.
  17. The Bronny James Sweepstakes is heating up!
  18. The fact that Taillon has quietly rebounded is the most infuriating thing about this season, to me. It'd be one thing if this team only had one good starter with a bunch of schmucks, but it finally feels like they have a really good rotation for the first time since 2017, only the offense and bullpen are actively trying to burn the team down for the insurance money.
  19. Well, this year just seems like a barrel full of suck. Should be fun!
  20. I just realized something: Owen Caissie is Carrot Ironfoundersson.
  21. I hate the idea of it, but I'm admittedly curious what Steele would fetch on the trade market. If the only way this team gets a superstar bat is through the farm, then trading Steele might actually be worth it, especially considering the Cubs seem set up to churn out quality pitchers for the next 2-3 seasons.
  22. The $1b question in my mind right now is, how much of an overhaul does this roster need to be in playoff contention in 2025? In other words, does this team just need to suck it up and right the ship with a retool in the offseason, or should it get blown to smithereens with every non-SP on the table at the deadline?
