  1. Should get through without a hitch. Bankruptcy Court judges are usually incredibly passive and the creditors would be buffoons to block this sale since it would substantially devalue the franchise and cut them off from a source of payments.

  4. breach of contract? playing pickup softball is breach of contract? I'd like to hear this. It could easily be. These guys have clauses in their contracts that ban them from participating in all sorts of physical activities. Teams don't generally call them out on it, even if the activity leads to an injury, but it's in there. The magic word "waiver" comes to mind if he's done this stuff before and the Cubs never called him on it..

  10. Not picking on you, but why does everyone on this board assume we can sign the guy to a 1-year deal? He's stayed healthy all season and has been absolutely dominant in the second half. He's going to get some 2- and 3-year offers from teams in the offseason. Hence why you offer him arbitration. If he wants a long term deal, he'll walk away and the Cubs will get two draft picks.

  15. I have to wonder how much DePodesta benefited from having Logan White around. I'm not doubting DePo's baseball acumen, but White has proven himself to be quite astute when it comes to scouting and developing a farm system.
  16. I have fond memories of those threads where every page was nothing but Fred's posts.
  17. So basically its where it has been for a while now. Nah, there was no firm contract in place for a deal up until today. Now that a deal is in place, this can move through the BK court and get league approval in a relatively short period of time. We'll see what the timeline looks like in the near future.
  18. Pray to all that is holy that he bounces back next season, and then dump him off on anyone who's willing.
  19. This season feels like 2005 more than anything else, imo.
  20. Something tells me having an angry manager harp about fundamentals isn't going to change anything. These are grown men who have been playing baseball for most of their lives; bringing in new coaches and new managers really will not change a whole lot. You'd still see Soriano do that annoying hop, swing at horrible pitches, and have a loopy swing. You'd still see Theriot having trouble ranging in either direction and making the throws he needs to make. You'd still see Kevin Gregg struggle with his control and periodically give up HRs. If you want a fundamentally sound team, this one is not constructed to pull that style of baseball off. Bringing in someone like Sandberg won't magically change the problems facing this team.
  21. Lou was a step up from Dusty Baker. Sandberg definitely can be worse. I want people to know while we abuse Lou a bit here, he's an infinitely better than Baker. Baker was in his own world. I still think that an "involved" Lou is not a bad choice to manager your team. But the way he's managed in the face of adversity really turned me off to him. I think Lou's problem is something that is common to many, many managers. He over-thinks situations and feels that he has to do more than is really necessary to win games as a manager. When he over-thinks a situation, it tends to backfire on him more often than not. Moreover, he deserves some credit for being willing to think outside the box (see: Marshall in LF), for sticking with hot hands, and for being willing to play rookies.
  22. Lou was a step up from Dusty Baker. Sandberg definitely can be worse.
  23. Maybe the expectations weren't super high but there were expectations for that team. Until Derrek Lee went down we were doing ok. Not saying we would have been much better but there were a lot of injuries that year. It reminds me a little bit of how our starting staff keeps getting injured. I think we saw 17 starting pitchers that year....Mateo, Marmol, Ryu, Walrond, Marshall, Maddux, Zambrano, Hill, Guzman, Prior, Wood, O'Malley, Jerome Williams, Wade Miller, Rusch...I'm probably missing a few. I also remember the teams in the Central not looking particularly imposing that year. We know what happened with the Cardinals, but going into the season, the NL Central looked like the Cubs could win it. I still go back and forth on whether 2002 or 2006 was the more miserable season this decade.
