    Bill Wirts, the Blackhawks owner, thinks he can do worse. David Glass of the Royals thinks he has a strong case. James Dolan of the Knicks wants a piece of this action. Donald Sterling of the Clippers puts his team into the fold of worst run. And will, I do I agree the Cubs are a pretty bad organization is sports, I can still think of a few teams that are worse in their history then the Cubs. I think the Blackhawks are still worse. In the baseball world though. Glass has much, much, MUCH less to work with than Hendry. I'll throw Jimbo's hat in the ring for most incompetent GM in MLB. And as for '03, it has become abundantly clear we owe thanks to the Pirates for that little miracle, not Jim Hendry. Glass is the owner. It's his fault there's nothing to work with. At least Glass seems to be doing something about it. Since the GM was fired, the Royals have played much better baseball than before his firing. And I think he made a good hire with the new GM.

The Pirates did what the script called for, the Astros losing those games to the Brewers was the miracle.

    It's equal in terms of blame, neely. Hendry: for putting together a 6th place team in the NL Central, together. Baker: for giving up on the season when Derrek Lee went down to injury, a yr after giving up on the season when Nomar went down. players: 10% for simply not playing to their abilities. You only give 10% of the blame on the players when they're not playing to their abilities? :shock:

    Again, I would be willing to bet that the media keeps bringing it up and that's why he repeatedly talks about it. After all, he would've brought it up all the time in San Francisco, last year and earlier this year. And I still say the professional thing to do would be to not talk about it as something more than it is. If it's a story, by all means he should talk about it. But if the media is FISHING for a story, like he says they are, he shouldn't give them that story. However, by giving them the story, he can attempt to gain sympathy, distract people from his horrible abilities as a manager, and have the front page story be about the racism he's the victim of, rather than the fact he overused all his pitchers and still blew a game the day before... And who do you think is being distracted? Just about all the beat writers have said that it's time for the Cubs and baker to part ways, and with the booing Baker gets I'd guess that many, many fans aren't fooled.

    What's he doing right now that could impact 2007 moreso than Hendry's off-season and the manager for 2007 decisions? I don't think he'd haveMORE impact. But he can still influence these players, and he can cause bad blood and tensions everywhere. HE can overuse pitchers, and teach batters bad habits. There's plenty he could do. Again, if Hendry has any brain, there won't be many players back in 2007, so I fail to see what Baker can do to impact 2007. Pierre is Pierre and Jones is Jones. We have players who had bad habits before they even came to Chicago. It's just too bad that Hendry overvalued these guys. Cedeno wasn't ruined by Baker. If everything turned out the way we thought a year ago, Cedeno wouldn't have worn Cubbie pinstripes until September of this year. I still think Rothschild has more to do with our hurt pitchers than Baker did. In all of these years, I've yet to see or hear anything to suggest that Rothschild had differing views than Baker.

    I'll give Sullivan credit for getting the ball rolling by suggesting a 2007 lineup. If Hendry were a thinking outside the box kind of guy, I'd love to see him ask Cashman if ARod would drop his no-trade clause and see if the Yankees would pay $10 million of ARod's $25 million a year, and I'd pretty much agree to any reasonable trade. I have no problem letting ARam walk, but I would like to replace him with someone better than Lowell.

    Yeah but he keeps bringing up the subject in the media, apparently so he can look like an underdog or a victim. He brings it up or does the media ask him about it? It's hard for me to believe (even with Baker) that that is his response when asked, "What did you think of the ump's call at first base?"

    Aren't any of you football fans? I've been able to let Baker go since it seems he's lame duck, plus he should have no effect on the Cub's 2007 season. Something I wish I could say about Hendry. I don't understand why some still react to Baker comments. Finally, he seems to be out of here in 29 games and it seems as if some of you can't let him go. Just like the Neifi Perez posts that for some reason are still out there. He's gone and instead of forgetting that he ever wore a Cub uniform, we have to still have topics relating to Perez. By the way, it sounds as if Derrek Lee said the same thing, just in a shorter way, as Baker did regarding the media. Why not criticize him, too?

    I resent anyone who says the Cubs don't have a plan. Their plan is simple: sucker three million people into the park while raising ticket prices every year. :x

    I don't know what Hendry has done to give some of you hope that he'll hire the right manager for this team. Do you really think he'll all of a sudden fall in love with OBP and SLG? Do you think he'll change his attitude on pitching to contact vs. hard throwers who can't throw strikes? I think Hendry will offer Baker a one-year deal knowing Baker won't accept that. Then Hendry will just hire a guy like Baker just without the name of Dusty Baker.

    I'm usually one of the more optimistic ones on here, but if you think about it, I think Hendry has a tougher job to do this off-season than last off-season and he didn't even do that right. I think I'll begin looking forward to 2008.

    And that's why they aren't one of my favorite Cub teams. They seemed to just be happy to make the playoffs. Honestly, Brant Brown catches that ball, we wrap things up on the last day of the season, Mark Clark doesnt pitch game 1 and we might have been competitive in that series. We were very competitive in the last 2 games of the series. Should have won game 2, could have won game 3. Yeah, and Giant fans can say had they won at Colorado there wouldn't have been a 163rd game of the season. Or had we won at Houston there wouldn't have been a 163rd game. I still remember Javy Lopez hitting that game-tying homer off of Tapani, who missed his location by four+ inches.

    So you'd rather exert energy dissecting comments of those who get riled up by Baker comments? Baker is using injuries as an excuse, and he's implying that if everyone were healthy, he'd be managing this team to a .500 record. He's been full of excuses for four years now. No surprise. It looks as if he won't be back, so what's the point still talking about ridiculous Baker quotes. All you and the media are doing is giving him the attention he seems to desire. At this point, I think he should be treated as a non-issue. I'm already looking ahead to 2007 and he shouldn't have any effect on that season, so my attention is diverted to players and Hendry who will have an effect on 2007. Stupid Hendry. I'm still not happy that he will have an effect on the 2007 season.

    I'll also add that it helped in 1998 that we didn't lose key players to that team with injuries. The players also knew their roles and did them pretty well.

    I don't get why Baker's comments still rile people up. I knew it was nonsense when he suggested how many more games we could've won with Lee. I think this is just another attempt of him trying to give props to a vet. I guess at this point I no longer wish to exert so much energy in this team as to dissect every ridiculous Baker comment.

    I actually liked the 2001 season more than I did the 1998 season. Like 2003, the Cubs had to rely on a team losing a post-season spot vs. the Cubs really winning it. There were some really good moments from 1998, but for some reason I really liked the 2001 team better even though they didn't make the playoffs. I think, to me, it's a waste to make the NLDS if you lose it in three games.

    I have gotten the impression that there are several people just throwing out names just for the sake of throwing out names because they just don't want Baker as manager. These are likely some of the same people who wanted anybody to manage the Cubs other than Baylor and you see what that got us. To me, no manager is an upgrade if we have a GM, and those in his circle, who don't know how to evaluate talent and have little clue on how to construct a team. It's my opinion that in order for the Cubs to be successful Baker and Hendry will have to be gone. Getting rid of only one of two won't bring success.

    Come on, you know Hendry's m.o of overpaying for mediocrity isn't just confined to players. I can't wait to see Pierre's contract next year.... better yet, yes I can wait.

    The Cubs were the 2nd highest slugging team in the leage in both 2004 and 2005, yet they were only middle of the road or worse in runs scored, because of their lack of baserunners. It is so blatantly obvious what the problem is. Everybody can see it. But some just refuse to admit it. And some wonder why people are rude to the ignorant non-believers. There are people on here who don't believe in the importance of OBP? :shock:

    Okay, maybe my hatred of Baker doesn't keep me from misreading things... or maybe it does. But I read that quote as saying OBP means nothing if you can't score runs. And his "clogging bases" meant leaving runners on base and not bringing guys home. Did I misread something?

    Ownership was saying that thinking it would be publicly financed. I don't think the $340 million includes the ballpark village that they are also paying for. Personally, I hope their payroll gets cut. But, then again, that would just again show how much better Jocketty is then Hendry since they'll probably still be contending for the NL Central even if their payroll were trimmed to $75 million. :x I still think the current ownership will sell the Cardinals within another 5-7 years.

    You may be right about that. I hope not. Maybe Hendry will be gone by then. I'm guessing that an equally poor 2007 season will mean Hendry is canned before 2008 (Andy may be gone by then as well). But anything around .500 or better and Jim will get all of 2008 as well, and he'll have to sign or get rid of Izturis before the 2008 season. Just curious where your optimism lies with the possibility of MacPhail and Hendry being gone by 2008. The fact that MacPhail didn't fire Lynch, who was, at best, equally pathetic as Hendry, gives me no hope that MacPhail will fire Hendry even with a bad 2007. If MacPhail is not here, then I could see it. I just want to be as optimistic as you.
