    We could get together and pool out money together and buy 300 blue T-shirts. Then in black marker on the back we write "SOTO - 58" as if it were a jersey shirt. Then hand them out to fans entering the ballpark

    I like your idea of hitting Floyd second. The guy had a ton of good ABs in September and was the teams second most patient hitter in September.

    I know, I'm a dork. But what am I supposed to do at work? My job? As you can see, Dempster blows game 1 and Lou short on patience, puts Howry as the closer. The fans freak out because the least winnable game of the series on paper was blown by Dempster. The Cubs win game 2 fairly easily on the strength of 2 Aramis HRs (a 2 run shot in the first and a 3 run shot in the 7th). Howry gets the save The series shifts to Wrigley and the wind is blowing out. Rich Hill is shakey the first few innings but gets through unscathed. Cubs jump out to a quick lead with a leadoff HR by Sori and a couple of run scoring singles on Livan. Overall Livan is always in trouble. Hill explodes in the 3rd and 4th, but Lou keeps him in long ehough for the Cubs to get the win. Game 4 starts out poorly when Zambrano, on short rest is wild and erratic in the first inning, giving up 3 runs. The Cubs claw back to tie it on the DBacks vaunted bullpen in the 8th and in the 10th, Daryle Ward wins it with a series walkoff HR. Wrigley goes nuts and the Cubs advance.

    Waiting is killing me too. So much so, I developed linecode predictions for all games in the series to pass time.     When I started going out with my girlfriend in January, I showed her Fever Pitch (mind you I left the room and did other things while she was watching it) and at the end explained to her that I am the Cubs fan version of this and that if she dates me she has to realize that I am going to be like this for most of the Spring-Fall. There have been a few testy moments where I can tell that she is thinking "What did I get myself into"..but overall its gone over well.

    Is there a choice for Padres (potential for Barrett/Zambrano showdown in playoffs)? I guess its too late anyways

    There is very little doubt in my mind that this is the Brewer's division for the next several years. Which is what we said in 2003 and the W.Sox in 2005. Baseball changes in a blink of an eye. I definitely didn't say that. Their starters were Garland (in peak years), Buehrle (in peak years), Contreras (over the hill), El Duque (over the hill) and Freddie Garcia (over the hill). Their lineup was never that great, and contained little to no young talent that you could count on improving and being dominant. The White Sox had young talent in the minors, but none of them proved that they could be good in the pros (and haven't except for Chris Young and Josh Fields, but even they are nowhere near the talent of Braun, Fielder, Weeks, etc). I expected them to contend for another 2-3 years because of their pitching, but not for a stretch of 5-6 years like the Brewers will have coming up. The only thing that can stop the Brewers from dominating is not getting enough starters to develop.

    There is very little doubt in my mind that this is the Brewer's division for the next several years. Exactly, with some consistancy on offense (sure to be helped by a full season of Weeks and Braun) and improved pitching, this team is scary good for years.

    I mentioned this in another thread, but how funny is it that the Cubs are the most recent postseason team and probably have the most postseason experience out of any NL entrant out there.     The thing that scares me is that I read somewhere that the DBacks are 28-17 against lefties this year. Ted Lilly and Rich Hill pitch games 2-3, Zambrano is neutralized with Webb. It could be a very tough series if we come out flat in game 1.

    You really don't know this. There's no way to know how much the new ownership is going to spend. There's really no way to even know who the new owners are going to be at this point, despite all the conjecture from the papers so far. Isn't it a little like maxing out your credit card and hoping that your future salary will be able to afford your current purchases though? It's an irresponsible way to live your life, and it's an irresponsible way to run a business. The only way it pays off, is if we win a WS this year. It is, but if the gamble pays off we are all happy. Where would this team be without those purchases this year? If we win the World Series, of course it will all be worth it. And we are in the playoffs, which means we have more than a fighting chance now. But if we dont, and even with the laziest odds, we have a 1-8 shot at getting to that point, how bad could the next 2-3 years be?

    Who cares! Don't you think that our team payroll will rise? If not then we are in trouble regardless of back loaded contracts. There is no reason our payroll should not be a minimum of 120 million. Ok, so $90 million to 7 players means $30 million to 18 players, an average of $1.67 million per person. Sure some rookies will be paid the league minimum, but pretty much on average we have to allot very little money to improving the ballclub in the near future. You need a starter? Good luck because any decent one is going for $9 million a year at least. A good reliever? $4-5 million. A patient bat? $6-7 million. For the most part, we won't be able to afford these players.

    Again, I don't think people realize how screwed we are long term. Look at this. The Cubs will have these 7 players under contract though 2009 (there are more than these 7 but these players have either high salaries or backloaded deals). Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez, Ted Lilly, Carlos Zambrano, Alfonso Soriano, Jason Marquis, Mark DeRosa. Here is how much these players collectively made in 2007: $54.9 million Here is how much it escalates to in 2008: $73.175 million And now the alarming 2009 rate: $89.525. Their salaries rise over 63% over a 2 year period. Basically we are spending $34.625 million more on our players salary and getting nothing back in return. For reference, the Devil Rays spent $24 million on their roster of 25 men this year. With the team going up for sale, and potentially going to an owner with shallower pockets, you should expect to see little to no improvements being made to this club via free agency. Our only hope of improving is some team helping us out and taking on some of this salary. This is all Jim Hendry's doing, make no mistake. He mortgaged the team's future because he knew if he didn't win this year, he'd be fired.

    There will be less and less of these threads popping up in about 1-2 years when all of those back loaded contracts really start to hurt us.

    A page full of posts and Truffle is the only one that didn't pick the Cubs to get past the Diamondbacks? Are we certain everyone shared their "realistic" picks? I know we had an abundance of success against Arizona in the regular season, but....:-# This happens in every prediction thread on every message board across the country.

    I don't know what's crazier, the fact that either the Rockies, Cubs, Phillies or Diamondbacks will represent the NL in the World Series, or that of all the NL teams, the Cubs most are the most recent participant in the playoffs and probably collectively have the most postseason experience

    Wow, not a very good day for one of the MVP candidates 1-5 with 3 K a BB and a misplayed fly ball that caused the tying run to score and is the reason the Padres still have a shot at Wild Card champs
